Greece's road to the title was really tough, they faced Portugal twice (including the final), France (the current European champions back then) and Czech Republic (the best team of the tournament)
The Colossus Rhodes 💙🤍 What a tactical masterpiece by Otto Rehhagel to put the Czechs under so much offensive pressure in extra time. That was the key to success. No way, the Greeks can only build walls.
Apart from the Czech national football team, the rest (Portugal,France) were defeated by their own arrogance! The Czechs were serious, deadly and very much respected by all. The only team I felt sorry about.. ! Well, that's sports,no misscalls were made and Greeks won in the court.
Defeated by own arrogance??? So you're telling me that a national team like Portugal, that NEVER had won an euroean cup by the time, was not taking greece seriously, at our own home, with a chance of a life time to win??? We were dead serious about that final... We knew that it was our only chance to win it. We didnt take greece for granted, knowing the fact that greece was the only team that had defeated us during group stage. Sadly we lost. Greece wanted it more and worked harder for it, also having some luck in between. Portugal won the european cup in 2016 the same way greece won in 2004, with hard work and some luck, but none of them were the best team of each tournament. Czech republic deserved to be on the final, in 2004 to be honest
@@hltds We lost it because our coach is / was an ass. He needed that slap right in the first match to change the team, removing the old guys from the team, and using FCPorto players that had "just" won the european champions league. Towards the end of the tournament, those players were tired, we had very intense games against England and the Netherlands, and we just weren't able to counter the greeks and create opportunities that would allow us to win the finals. All in all... I think Scolari wasn't arrogant... just an idiot. In the end, I'm still struggling to understand why he kept Pauleta in the team so many minutes.
@@ruizinho7225 Well, Porto won the Champions League only thanks to the refereeing. In fact, the dragons didn’t even deserve the 1/4 finals because of Paul Scholes clear goal in the match against Manchester United. Then, in the 1/2 finals with Deportivo La Coruna, the referee did not award 2 penalties against Porto. By the way, Deco fell twice again in the Greek penalty area, in the hope that the referee would help, as in the match with Deportivo, but the referee did not help Portugal and you lost fairly.
@@lilavergissmeinnicht Firstly, Porto's victory in champions league was clean (like in 1987 by the way, I hope it stopped hurting eventually). The path to the finals was conquered fairly, and the final itself was won without a hitch. Blame our adversaries for their lack of competence. Either way, there's nothing you can do about it. Secondly, I never said Greece's victory in the euro wasn't just or fair; our coach lacked competence, and it could've been different if he didn't; but it wasn't my intention to diminish the greek's merit in winning, in fact I'm quite happy for them, but even happier for winning the euro in France with a more or less decent coach a decade later.
Golden era physical skills, shitty mental toughness tho - its crystal clear. Also LOOK at 9:52 their reaction after missing the chance, like miserable, poor, helpless people clutching their heads desperately, look when Greek players lose the few chances they get, they applaude eachother and yeah, keep focused at what they do. I see superstar players STINKING of fear and desperation in the Czech team, and I see noname players struggling like heroes in the Greek team, correct me if Im wrong.
