Tim, you are the best dude in internet, each single video i watch teach my something that i am strugling with, prototyoes, newer thing about that, you cover my problems in this video i facing each time i make something, why is so that you give the best advices and know exacly with what issues ppl are dealing without them realizing that :O i was allways thinink that nobody gives sinple ansfer, and there you are
I've been thinking a lot about this over the last couple of weeks. I want to make Visual Novels. There are specific mechanics that are required for any VN and they carry over from game to game once they are built. What really changes between them is the story itself. What takes so long to make them is that Visual Novels are novel in length so there's a lot of story and art to bring into a game and novels themselves take ages to write. I've decided that the best thing for me to do is to start writing short stories instead of trying to write novels out of the gate. I don't think I've ever heard of anything like a Visual Short Story so I may be creating my own sub genre here but I think it will work. This will let me create small VN prototypes and give me experience making them. If any of them are popular enough I could then use them as launch points to create larger games with the standard novel length in the future. Look out Telltale. I'm going to give you a good run for your money. Lol
are you trying to sell the visuals or the story? because if you have a good story then people won't mind the graphics. if you're trying to sell the graphics... I'm not so sure if it will take.
If you find anyone to talk about prototyping it would be awesome if they could show off some of their prototypes. I think this is something that you don't see very often. People show of their in progress works all the time but rarely will they show the changes they have made to get to a working model.
I can't recommend enough, a talk given by the creator of Braid and The Witness - Jonathon Blow. He has several good lectures available to watch on UA-cam. It just so happens one of my personal favourites is about prototyping. He shows of his own prototypes while giving a truly insightful speech about how to find "truth" in your game. I personally feel like every aspiring developer should watch it.
I just found this channel one hour ago and I have been binge watching ever since!
