    Thank you so much for this! I've had an ASI Air for about 2.5 years and had given up on it being reliable to control my CGX-L. Testing it out tonight after watching your video, and it seems to be working correctly. I'd been searching the internet how to get this ASI Air working with CGX-L, and this is the first time I've actually gotten it running successfully.

    Cody...another great video. I appreciate how you break down each step and explain the basics and needed steps to achieve success! I have a CGX-L in storage but have been reluctant to bring it out because of the communication problems while using the ASIAir Pro. I am going to bring it out and begin using it with my EdgeHD 11. Much needed for the extra weight of guide scope and image train. Thanks again. I hope you will be available for a Q & A when I begin with the CGX-L.

    Thank you! Just started using an old Celestron Advanced GT and was using both the ST-4 cable from the mount to the 120mm guide cam and the USB from the hand controller to the ASIR - tonight I'll skip the ST-4 cable. I'll also follow the startup procedure you shared, as that's not exactly how I did it last night. I have yet to be able to guide using the ZWO 30mm guide scope with the 120mm mini guide cam on the Celestron mount but FINALLY got guiding back working the first part of the night on my Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer mount.

    Nice useful video Cody. I took your advice on auto guiding settings in the ASI Air Pro from one of your previous videos and it works great. For some of your subscribers that don't use a Celestron mount, here is my experience with the ASI Air Pro and an Orion Atlas Pro. I use a USB cable from the mount to the ASI Air Pro. I rarely use the hand controller that came with the mount anymore. The ASI Air Pro will not connect to the mount, even when I try and change the Baud rate. The work around is to change the telescope/mount in the drop down menu to "EQMod". It auto connects every time and works (almost) flawlessly. On rare occasions the ASI Air Pro will slew the telescope to a target and indicate that it is centred. However, sometimes the target is off in the corner. The polar alignment is spot on though. No matter how many times I return the mount to Home position and then slew to the target, the same thing happens. The fix is easy - turn everything off (including my laptop) and reboot. No need to polar align again, as the mount has not moved. This seems to work. No rhyme or reason. Sometimes I feel that if I jumped up and down and tapped my hand on my head and rubbed my stomach at the same time, that would probably fix the problem as well. Yep, no rhyme or reason! Thanks again for your great videos!

    I followed your process steps and ran into the known problem of the mount disconnecting. I resolved it by making sure that you use a separate power supply cord to the CGX so it is independent of the ASIAIR PLUS. Secondly it is important to boot up the ASIAIR and Mount then confirm you are connected to the ASIAIR wifi before starting the ASIAIR app on the tablet. These minor, but important steps resolved the random disconnect issue with the latest hand controller chipset.

    I have a 8” SCT with AVX mount and recently purchased an ASIAirPlus 256g. I used your tutorial to get started but I can’t get ASIAir to find selected objects reliably. I think the reason yours worked well is because you have an F 2.0 RASA with a short focal length. My 8” SCT has a 2032mm focal length. With a small sensor of an Astro camera it’s harder for the ASIAir to plate solve. I’ve used it three nights so far. ASIAir finds my first target, last night Dumbell Nebula, M27. But it couldn’t find the next three targets, M33 Triangulum Galaxy, M31 Andromeda, and Jupiter. I beginning to thing ASIAir is only suitable for short focal length < 1000mm telescopes.

So your video was extremely helpful. The AsiAir plus recently release a firmware update to include a feature call “All-sky polar alignment”. I know it is currently in beta release, the place I will be spending a lot time getting use to my setting up is my south facing balcony with my house blocking the view of Polaris. Please review the “All-sky polar alignment” feature on the ASIair plus for comments. Great thinks for all your videos--Tom

    This video gives me some hope that I won't have to bail on this hobby.
    I'm a newbie, just 2 weeks in with my first telescope; a new Celestron Advanced VX mount and C6" OTA. Quite a learning curve. Finally got my setup working but the smile soon leaves my face when I remove the USB cable from my laptop and access the mount using the Celestron WiFi dongle; all but the Camera can be accessed.
    I don't have the ASI Air Pro (yet). I've been using the Celestron CPWI software that is ASCOM compatible. Over the laptop USB to Hand Controller connection I launch CPWI to setup alignment and then open SharpCap. But when I remove the USB connection and use the Celestron WiFi dongle (in AP Mode) the ZWOASI662MC camera can't be seen. Of course it can't be seen since the AVX doesn't have a USB port for the camera. The guide port has a guide port on the mount to connect to but the mount doesn't have any USB port for the camera.
    So according to your video, if I change gears and move to the ASI Air Pro there might be a way to be cable free. Thanks for the tip.

    Cody, thank you for your focus on Celestron mounts-invaluable!!! Your videos are paced well and totally ‘user friendly.’ Very encouraging. Keep up the great work/videos. One question, you mention that a recalibration should take place after a meridian flip. If this is the case then you can’t simply do a true auto run and forget about the guiding. Could you please elaborate.

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  2 роки тому

      Yes, good point, I may have misspoke or messed up there! I keep my recalibrate after meridian flip turned off. That way it’s set and forget as you say. Excellent clarification.

I'm having a lot of trouble focusing at the moment. Every time I move the scope the focus shifts widely and the EFA seems to go from one extreme to the other whilst trying to get good focus. I have the mirror lock screws at the back undone. I thought I only tightened those once focus was achieved, but when I do, the focus changes. Any hints?

  • @avipatil8400
    @avipatil8400 2 роки тому +2

    Great video. I have an old CGEM and the differences when connecting asiair is I turn on asiair pro first. I have it connected by ethernet to my slate because the wifi on asiair pro sucks. I select the slate wifi on my ipad that connects the asiair to my ipad. I then turn on asiair and check that I am connected to all the equipment (all cameras, EFW,and EAF) except the mount. I then turn on the mount which will prompt me on my cegm to make sure that the marks are aligned and cegm mount is aligned. I punched in time and date and select quick align on my mount hand controller. I don't bother of slewing to the star. I then click connect the mount.
    It is very important that you check the Latitude and Longitude on your telescope tab of asiair especially the longitude if you living in north america because the asiair software apparently does not like negative numbers so for west of Greenwich which is a negative number it will go all the way to the East and asiair automatically calculates and put the East number which is a positive number. Most of the softwares on internet will give you a negative number if you are living west of Greenwich. Just subtract that negative number from 360 (degrees which is for the entire earth) and it will give you the east positive number. For example, if your longitude is -120 North then it is 360-120=240 east in asiair. It may not match with your phone numbers because the phone numbers are latitude -120 north. It is important that asiair selects the right longitude and latitude otherwise when slewing the telescope might slew to different parts of the sky presuming that the longitude is +120. Hope it is clear. You can slew to any part of sky other than north pole and take a 30 secs photo and plat solve it and sync the mount so that asiair knows where the mount is. You can slew to the target. Rest of the things are the same as video.

    Thanks for the tutorial. I've got two setups but have not started to do imaging yet. Always feel I need more info to just execute. I think this was what I was looking for. (Plus your other video I was commenting on celestron focal reducers and cameras.) I should focus on one first but why do that when I can be totally confused with two systems, right? I do have my trusty notebook to put all my notes and procedures in. This is gear I have and what I will keep with each set up for now. Explore Scientific ED 80 CF with Zwo ASI294 MC Pro Cooled for the main with ZWO ASI290MM Mini for guide scope on a CGEM II Mount. I have the ZWO ASI AIR but have the Plus on back order. The other scope is the Celestron CPC 800 on the GPS Alt Az goto mount. I have the ZWO ASI385MC that I am going to use to image with the CPC 800. I thought of moving the ZWO ASI Air to that when the Plus comes in. Do you think that would be redundant?

    Solid guide. Do you ever use the "sync mount" button in the menu after doing a plate solve? I usually push it after slewing to a target and then doing another plate solve when it comes up in the plate solve menu, but it doesn't seem to have an effect either way if I push it or not before an imaging session 🤷‍♂️

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  2 роки тому +1

      I don’t, I usually only image one target per night so once I plate solve I’m done. If I do slew to another target I just plate solve again.

The step by step guide has helped me get my AVX mount talking to the ASIAIR Plus and once the weather cooperates, I'll get it outside to see if I can get some pictures. Any chance you could post a printable checklist? Thanks again!

    Thanks for another excellent video.
    I commented on your earlier video on this topic that your use of a RASA must really help with the plate solve because you capture so many stars with the 8 inch aperture and low focal length. I have an SC 9.25 and an ASI 462 camera. I couldn't get plate solving to work due to the narrow field of view and the small sensor size on the ASI 462. Recently I added a 0.63 focal reducer and that helped substantially. Now plate solving works sometimes but only about one in five or ten attempts are successful. I'd welcome your thoughts on this. Can you do plate solving with a DLSR on the ASIAIR ?

    Thanks Cody -- this got me up and running with a connected system. I'd been running my camera from my ASIAir Pro for over two years and being able to now control my CGX also from the same is great!
    One question -- I've always been told that you want to go "east heavy" to get better tracking. How do you handle that with your meridian flip being automatic? Prior to this new fusion of ASIAir Pro + CGX, when I've done meridian flip I adjust counter weight so that I'm always east heavy.

    Posting my newbie mistakes here so that it can help others :
    (2600Mc Duo + C11 + CGXL + Asiair plus)
    works for me everytime :
    1) turn on the mount, set switch, then turn off the mount
    2) turn on the Asiair, wait for the "beep", connect to Asiair wifi with your phone
    3) turn in the mount, set switch, quick align, wait for the mount to say it's ready
    4) go to your Asiair interface, everything should be connected !
    Issues I had :
    1) My whole setup is connected to a lithium battery. When trying to power on the camera it didn't work. I had to go to the Asiair settings to enable power out to the camera port for it to turn on.
    2) Scope out of focus. I removed the EAF then did the focus by hand first, until I saw something on the camera, then replugged it after to do the focus. Seems stupid but I was trying to find an image with the EAF and it took forever...
    3) EAF screws not tightened enough : the focus plug didn't move at all because the small black screws were not tightened enough. I thought it was focusing, but it wasn't.

    Hi Cody, Thank you for your video. Very informative👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. I just got today the ASIAIR Plus and I am using my CGEMII, but in my case when initiating the Polar Alignment in the APP, the mount slews 60 degress to the East and then another 60 degress, and it stops and stays there, and does nothing else. !!! Has this happen to you before? What is wrong with my ASI AIR, or CGEMII?

    Thanks for the video... I have a Celestron AVX that I have had for years. 1 week ago I received an ZWO ASIAIR Plus and am trying to set it up. In your video you mention turning on the mount first without the ASIAIR Plus. Since The mount gets the 12 volts from the ASIAIR Plus how do I turn on the mount without activating the ASIAIR Plus? I have not been able to connect the ASIAIR Plus to the mount so that the ASIAIR Plus feeds the settings to the AVX. Thanks Richard

    Cody, thanks for the detailed process for the AVX setup. With this technique do you turn off Daylight Savings in the AVX hand control, per suggestion from Mr Chen on the ASIAIR forum page? I assume that your steps result in a sync occurring between the AVX and the ASIAIR? I have never synced the two, and therefore have never fiddled with the DST button.

    • @pete4082
      @pete4082 Рік тому

      IMHO, if you're not entirely sure what it does, you might consider spending time doing it the old fashioned way first, or watching a product review video instead of a setup video. The ASIair is really just to help streamline imaging workflows -- It's essentially just a little remote computer, but you can do most of that from your laptop directly. Once you've learned the steps, and what a pain it is, you'll come to understand what the asiair offers, and if you really even need it at all.
      I'm just starting out too, and the asiair primarily interests me because of the integrated wifi, 12v ports, and less cabling. Beyond that, its tough to justify the cost as a beginner when my laptop works just fine, and I can put $300 towards a better camera instead.

    Hello Cody . Great video thanks for uploading. 👍🙂
    I would like to ask (I just ordered such a model and my mount too AVX) when is AsiAir taking a picture, actually taking a picture( like a dslr camera?), or, for example, a multitude of frames with a 2-minute exposure like the SharpCap system, ergo video?
    My other question. I can see the Polaris nicely when I stand north behind the house...but if the AsiAir rotates the tube 60 degrees in polar alignment, I see exactly one roof in position. Does AsiAir polar alignment work this way, or should it be solved differently?
    Thanks for the reply in advance too. I want a clear sky from Switzerland

    I have a avx with a side by side bar so I have to place my Dec axis 90° out from the mark at home position. Other than that I think some of your tips will come in useful, especially pulling time and location data from the asiair, I wasn't aware this could be done.

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  2 роки тому

      Same here, I accidentally did it one day, and it took me a week to figure out how it’s done. The key is making sure the mount is on before the asi air, then connecting to the asi air and mount. Then you proceed and bam time, date and location automatically entered! :)

    Thanks Cody. I have read on Cloudy Nights that newer CGX mounts are unable to connect to ASIair Pro. Any thoughts since I believe your CGX is older?

    Hi Cody, thanks much for the video! A question I had was, what’s the starting position for the AVX mount? Does the polar axis of the mount need to point due north before we begin your process as described in the video? I tried this last night but the camera couldn’t pick up visible stars for the initial auto focus step due north, and hence I couldn’t proceed further. What’s the remedy here? Thanks!
