- 《鸥鹭忘机》的典故出自《列子·黄帝篇》中《好鸥鸟者》。“海上之人有好沤鸟者，每旦之海上，从沤鸟游，沤鸟之至者百住而不止。其父曰：‘吾闻沤鸟皆从汝游，汝取来，吾玩之。’明日之海上，沤鸟舞而不下也。
“忘机”本是道家语，意为消除机巧之心。用以指淡泊清净，忘却世俗烦庸，与世无争。人能忘机，鸟即不疑；人机一动，鸟即远离”，劝喻人莫生机心。
古琴曲《鸥鹭忘机》是一首精致的抒情小品。曲意隽永，指法细腻，哲理深邃，耐人寻味。《五知斋琴谱》后记中说它表现了“海日朝晖，沧江西照，群鸟众和，翱翔自得”的意境。”
《Ou Lu Wang Ji ( Guileless Seagulls and Herons》: A wellknown gin composition based on a fable from Lie Zi ：A fisherman who set out onto the ocean was visited in a friend manner by seagulls. When he told his father about these wonderful visits, he scolded him, saying, "How stupid you are! Why don' you catch some of these birds and bring them home for us to enjoy?" The next day, when the fisherman once more set sail, the seagulls stayed away from him, as though they sensed his plot. This Taoist fable warns people never to scheme, because only without plans and plots can humans hope to conform to nature.
《Wu Zhi Zhai qin Pu》（Notation of the Five Learnings Studio）says, "It expresses a vision of a beautiful sunrise at sea and a sunset in rivers where groups of bird enjoy flying freely in the atmosphere."
