  • We have 16 research groups in Oxford Mathematics and the Mathematical Biology group is one of the biggest with nearly 50 members, reflecting the growing importance of modelling in biology and medicine.
Kit Gallagher explains his work in our latest 'Show Me the Maths' film. Here's more about his work: www.maths.ox.ac.uk/people/kit...

Hi Kit, did you pursue mathematics and biology with the goal of improving cancer treatment or any other goal OR was there another reason like you enjoyed working on academic mathematics?

    ‘Relapse occurs’ :
Implying the patient is responsible for the cancer - as a model?
Or is this just a choice of words to refer to some general event?
If it means that youre not modeling the cancer as something attacking the patient (cell-wise) - as the term ‘relapse’ could imply - i have no concept of distinction:
    Between
    (1) relapse with respect to the cancer
    (2) relapse with respect to the drug. On an internal basis, as it were: because the model sounds like a form of externally imposed ingestion.
Both of these are involved in the dynamical model quite intimately: I can’t claim to know exactly what it is, but something like
    (1) x: concentration of cancer cells , y: concentration of drug entities
Seems like one dynamical system (WRT time) that would be involved, to be compared with your analysis of drug resistance/sensitivity on the scale of the model. All of this, with a corresponding discrete model as Jon Chapman’s course provides.
I personally can’t come to a clear concept of what this term is referring to. Or if relapse is in fact a phenomena that doesn’t refer to one in particular…..

The lifetime is meant to be maximized!?
I know this is convenient given the canonically taught continuous random variables in probability theory, but surely something less hellish should be maximized…
This is probably a beautiful demonstration of maths but not something Id literally take more seriously than simple christian living, Im afraid.

If he’s claiming that my mother died because of self induced need - in the sense of relapse - for violent drama,
That’s a deep thing. And claim upon model is not anything that would prove anything of the sort!
‘No one asked’: in Kantian philosophy, Dynamics and Mathematics are defined as to imply that they’re opposites.
The very fact of model - and the various local fixed points - are a big fucking problem in the sense of epistemological rigor for the classical philosopher.
Nor does the concentration of gases have *one whit* to do with a population model : where the only entity I care about is my personal dog.
What can one find? Nothing. That’s a pretty fucking crappy, useless, un-scientizing model you have then!
I know Andy doesn’t grasp this point. He acted like he didn’t know what I was talking about.
They’re streamlines - of some type- and that has nothing to do with Emmanuel’s trajectory.
      So Emmanuel asked, actually.
[Exposing Andy Wathen] is the nature of this event that I Indeed believe implicitly exercises the event of demand in an ill-defined way. For example, did anyone ask for your vehicular excretions to dirty up the air this morning, did anyone ask for you to take away the resource of coffee this morning; the resource of food? No. But the there’s an implicit demand that is more or less in the same stream as the known existence of demand of these things from the globe in general.
So in exactly this ill-defined sense, I actually must admit that there is implicit demand, I’m afraid.
Only philosophical maturity could generate sincere understanding of this problem you have.
