I am from Naples and grown up near scampia area, I can give you some more info about that area.
These Scampia buildings are called "le Vele" (the sails), they were built in the eighties to support all the people who had lost their homes after a strong earthquake destroyed half the city. Sadly a lot of these criminals forced the good people out of it to get the free given flats so it quickly turned into a densly populated criminal area (note that more than half of the families here are just normal people living their lifes, they are just poor and can't escape the zone).
It's funny you say people here keep staring at me and they are suspicios, you look suspicious as fuck too XD.
Scampia is far out from Naples city, the areas you are showing in the video are just the scum of Naples, the most part of the city is modern, cool and enjoyable.
The videos taken in the first part of the video are in the city center area called Quartieri Spagnoli, that's the second worst part in Naples, where another Mafia family has control (different than scampia one). So basically all these neighborhoods you are showing are just the worst part of it, you would be suprised to see how amazing the normal areas are looking.
The people in Naples is also the most friendly in Italy, as a tourist you can't really tell where the bad people is unless you get yourself in such zones with a 1000$ camera in the hand :)
Some fun facts about your video: when entering the first vela you hear a kid screaming something, that's a typical signal to drug dealers that someone sketchy or police is entering.
As for the truck selling fish, you have the same for any kind of food, fruits etc. even delivering fresh baked bread XD, of course all black market.
Another fun fact, while walking in such areas you are the safest in Naples, because thiefs do not work near their homes, that attracts undesired police's attention, instead they go steal in the richer areas of the city.
As for the people believeing it's all like in the Gomorrah movie, it's really not like that, there are such situations in those areas of course but as a tourist you wouldn't notice anything.
In the past couple years it became much safer too since million of tourists are attracted from the city and sketchy people got a job, it's defintely worth a visit, check some other Naples video.

@@orchmuto5265 you can see kids at time mark 24:38 coming home from school, so we can assume it's 1:30pm, that's holy lunch time bro, Italians can't skip food :D.
You should also have a look at this place from the map, these are just residential buildings with nothing around, you will only find junkies in the basements and some dealer at each corner, but no people.
If you want to see people you should head towards streets, where shops are, here you will find your sketchy people sitting outside bars or riding on scooters around the city.
Most of the people are roaming between Scampia and Secondigliano, which is the next and main village.

For the ones that want to know: Scampia is not anymore dangerous as it was 15 years ago. Before a big war between local caused many deaths and attracted the attention of the media and the police, it was the largest drug market in Europe. Then the traffic and criminal density moved to other neighborhoods of Naples due to the enormous amount of police that the war attracted. Now it is still a degraded neighborhood but nothing like what it was in its worst years.

You are doing a awesome job mate and I hope some fans out there can help you out with some of the episodes in the series.
EDIT: Replies to this seem to be fairly divided on the topic. I understand that the people who disagree want to only see these places from Spanian's perspective and I also enjoy his take on these places but I also think that he can walk around by himself and then actually present all the questions he has to a local who can give Spanian context to what he is seeing. Construction of La Vele began in 1962, and dragged on until 1975. Not long after completion, they were overrun with squatters and people evacuated from elsewhere during the 1980's seismic crisis; the maintenance basically ceased, and the entire estate has been decaying ever since. Two blocks were demolished in 2003, and a further one in 2016. The remaining ones were also scheduled to be demolished, except for one, that would be refurbished, but this, like so many projects in the area was so far not yet realised.
There are places around Napoli where partially completed buildings have stood abandoned for several decades.

That was mad to see because in Ireland and UK people think of "Neighbours" when they think Australia. But it's nothing compared to Naples Mafia clans controlling the areas ordinary people live in through fear and "helping" them (loaning money or getting there kids to do dirty work to pay off debts). I live in Northern Ireland we have Paramilitaries who rule entire housing estates with fear, intimidation and respect due to killing cops n British army during the conflict here. Peoples mum's bring there sons who are involved in drug dealing or joyriding to be shot in alleys here, shooting by appointment like the Dr or Dentist except its fellas in balaclavas with 22 calibre handgun to clip your thigh, ankle or calf for being a "bold boy" 😂! Entire areas with businesses pay protection money to paramilitaries they even control who lives in social housing by intimidating foreigners out of their homes so they can move in there own people or family. Bouncers are ex/current paramilitaries as are Taxi Drivers 😅😂 eyes n ears everywhere much like the Camorra in Naples! Italy would have to be the prime example of communities who are over tourism due to over-tourism. Venice would have to be the epicentre banning large cruise ships with hordes of tourists descending on a piece of 'land' which is so limited in size. I believe that there is so many tourists there that the locals have left taking away what was beautiful in the first place. Wonderful inhabitants, best food, great nightlife and great weather. What else could you want? By the way: you really visited the most desolate areas of the city. The city is like a gift box: buildings and areas might seem run down on the first look, but when you enter the building/flat/appartement/courtyard it's gonna be gorgeous and the people you meet will be friendly, sympathetic and talkative. Never talked so much to strangers, even though my Italian is quite rusty. And the food, omg, the food... That alone is worth going there. Best Pizza in the world. Fogliattelle. Everything with Lemons. Finger licking seafood. Fritto Misto. Limoncello. I could go on for hours. Dolce Vita!

Love your vids mate. Lived in Naples for 9 years, but never made it to Scampia (except for getting a lift from Piscinola a couple of times). What I can tell you is that there are a lot of other places round the whole bay that look like Scampia. Even some of the places that are not as directly connected to the Camorra also have that dingy look. Take some of the area going towards Nola for example, or even Noceria, or out towards Cuma you can also find these run down places. But it's mainly due to the poverty and problems of corrupt politicians that's caused this mess. Although I never made it to Scampia, I'd say the area around Garibaldi Station is pretty grim. Walking home from there at night you could definitely see some freaky stuff.
But what I will say is that for a city that has a reputation for crime, I never felt safer anywhere else, as safe as I did in Naples I mean. The people from Naples are the best in the world (I should know as I married one 😉). They are anobgst the most generous friendly warm people you'll ever meet. My impressions from travelling around Italy earlier this year was that the majority of the country is just falling apart, especially the further south you go. Lots of litter in most places and public/private infrastructure poorly maintained. Fantastic place to eat and experience and very eye opening. I know it's a different culture and a different lifestyle, but man it made me feel incredibly privileged to be able to call Australia home.

Really interesting yet again Spanion, keep up the great content. Pretty sure I heard you use the phrase "grouse" before which surprised me as I'm from Melbourne and now in my 50s thought "grouse" was a unique term we used here growing up as kids in the 70s and 80s. I still use it from time to time in reference to something being "awesome" or "great" but I know my two kids who are now teens look at me weird when I say it. I don't give a shit. Love it 🇦🇺👍

@@martinjohnson2381 Interesting about your German mate. Wondering when it was that you lived in Melbourne for those 8 years ?, as I mentioned, the phrase “grouse” that I remember using a lot was pretty much back in the 70s & 80s when I grew up in Melbourne, until I moved to Sydney to live for 4 years then came back. When I got to Sydney in 1988 up until I left in 1991, I can’t remember anyone up there using it at all. Now still back in Melbourne I only now hear it occasionally, usually from people of my gen. Maybe it is a German saying, I don’t know where it first came here other than we always used it in reference to something being “awesome” etc. Apart from an actual bird being a “Grouse” I did just find in an Urban dictionary these few meaning-
“First recorded in 1924, the Australian word grouse may not be so popular today, but it is included on the urbandictionary website as Australian slang, primarily in use in Melbourne. According to the ABC's online Word Map, however, grouse meaning
      'excellent' is…”
      “grouse-
Word heard mostly in Australia's 2nd largest city, Melbourne meaning something wonderful, amazing.”
…and this one, which cracked me up 🤣
      “grouse-
      Just Something Fucken Awesome.
Tommo: “Get a fucken load of my Big Mac !”
      Ben: “That’s fucken Grouse !”

No one should be living like that, this is making me tear up at points. Spanian must have felt like he was walking into some dystopian future, idk how he does is. But thanks for doing it, I hope it motivates people to make the areas we live in better and try to find ways to help everyone.
