3 Days of Rain at the Upper Falls of the Genesee River in Letchworth Park!

  • After a long, warm, dry summer we finally had some rain, but too much all at once as you will see in this video. I believe we had between 3.5 - 4+ inches of rain since Monday and today is Wednesday. The Genesee watershed drains a lot of Western New York State from just inside Pennsylvania all the way to Lake Ontario at Rochester, New York. Fall is descending on us and made a beautiful back drop for the raging, muddy waters of the Genesee as it plummeted over the Upper Falls in Letchworth Park.

      +Taromovies Swiss Bushcraft Thanks for watching and commenting Taro. As many times as I have seen this water raging like this I am still in awe of the raw power water possesses.

    Amazing power of water...key of life, hopefully some will fall way out west, sure need it!

      +greatbasinman Thanks! I hope you get some of the moisture we are receiving. It hadn't really rained in quite a while in my area but it sure made up for it. Water has always been a big part of my life as I was a Water Treatment Plant Operator for 39 years until I retired a couple of years ago.

    +Paleoman52, thanks Ken, my problem with the cider is it costs me two dollars more for it then you, I have to buy three- four gallons at a time to save on gas. I always enjoy my time at the Native American Pioneer day at Letchworth, and was impressed by the crowed around your site. Everyone, especially the young people were riveted on your teaching demonstrations. I myself learned quite a bit that day. Kudos to the man that can start fires with air pressure!

    The voice of God, pretty loud too. Amazing how your leaves haven;t changed much. Because of our drought, ours are already changing in parts of NC.

      +kwartzkrazee We've had a really prolonged warm spell right up to a couple of days ago and no frosts so this years leaf color change is late. I think it will peek in about 3 weeks. The voice of God is powerful for sure and I was amazed at how the ground was trembling beneath my feet as I stood next to that cataract!

    Thanks Ken. Reminds me of Agnes.

      @Paleoman52  9 років тому

      +skymaster5543 I was thinking about Agnes too as I watched this raging water. It has quite a ways to go though to match that flood, but with a hurricane forecast to pass nearby it could raise these waters even more.

      +Paleoman52 Did you ever go in the bat cave? I explored it back in 1975.
      It was so interesting inside, knowing the history, and looking around.
      One of the most fascinating times I had in the park. However, and I understand why no one Talks about the cave.
      Oh,, lots and lots of Bats. 50 species alone 'Ive been told.

      Now it is almost inaccessible with only a tiny opening to squeeze through to enter it. A lot has changed at the Bat Cave since 1975. There was a huge rock slide in front of it which almost sealed it off completely.

      +NorwegianWoods Thanks for watching Martin, that was some serious water for sure. I was mesmerized standing there watching that flow and quite often I would see an entire tree come down the river and go over those falls.

      +qcypointhunter Thanks Butch, we have had a long hot summer and this river was as tame as a puppy, but it quickly shifted gears with all the rain that fell recently. Nature is so amazing, first a super moon with a total eclipse and then raging water, we sure have been treated to a lot lately!

      +Drone Girl Thanks for checking in Drone Girl. That river is quite moody and it can change over night from a calm peaceful river to what you see in this video. Thanks for the greetings from Ireland, that is the land of my ancestry!

      +Kendra O Thanks Kendra O, as I stood next to that angry water I thought about how bad it would be to get caught up in the flow. I sure didn't want to test those waters, not even with my kayak, LOL!

      +commissionertom Thanks Tom, I really enjoyed your last video and I was glad to hear that you are all moved in to your new home. Hopefully I'll be getting out to check a couple of fields soon once the corn is off. If I do get out I'll be sure to video my hunt!

    That's an awesome amount of flowage right there Ken ! Probably going to be a lot more after the hurricane gets through with the East cost !

      @Paleoman52  9 років тому

      +rockheadOH I was there this morning and the level is down about 18" from what it was late yesterday, so hopefully there'll be room for more water from the hurricane!

    Geez Louise Ken, that looks like the early April thaw. The North end past the dam is quite high and fast too. I am in no way ready for what's on its way, but I'm always ready for the taste of that good ole Castile cider.

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52  9 років тому

      +Bear 113 Haha! I too have been enjoying this years cider from the Castile Mill just down the road from me. Good to see you at the Native and Pioneer Heritage day at Letchworth a little while back.

    Ken! I have been trying to get caught up a little on some posts... and what a great capture of the water you have shared! How are you? i trust well! I do not even think it would be possible to survive that water should one fall in above! I cannot even believe the winter is turning back this way!??

      +Indian Trace I'm doing great, just really busy lately getting ready for my son's wedding in the middle of this month. Yep, that was some serious high water and it didn't take long for that river to go from a tame placid flowing stream to the raging angry water you saw in this video. I was just amazed as I stood there close by and I couldn't believe all the trees and debris I saw float by and over the Falls. I've been enjoying your recent hunts but haven't had the time to sit and write a good comment for each of them yet.

      Ken!! Thank you. I understand completely. Keep up the great heart for the North American Indian! I suppose there were certian period of the seasons and years the Indian just did NOT try to cross rivers such as that!!

      +SnyderPointMan I've been great Tim! I'm enjoying retirement as much as possible but have been extremely busy preparing for my son's wedding on October 18th. You should see the cool rustic arbor I have made for them. I used maple saplings and wild grape vine to make it.

      +walter Baranowski It was amazing to see how quickly this water had changed from the calm placid flow that I saw a couple of days ago. The main bulk of the rain hit south of my location, but this is a North flowing river so it drained all the hillsides and tributaries south of me. Very impressive to see this in person!

      +Paleoman52 the Cattaraugas over by me can turn just like that, I live right by the head of Zoar and some of the trees and logs that come over the springville dam are mind boggling. It's amazing what that water can do.
