Locomotive Bells: Bronze vs Steel vs Electronic
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 січ 2025
- Here we compare three different bells. From left to right we have a bronze EMD bell, a steel UKM bell, and a Graham-White e-bell. Again, you decide which you prefer. The two air bells have brand new Graham-White air motors installed and sound better than the previous video. Shot with an iPhone 4S.
This 50 second video is more informative than every other train bell video on the net, thanks for sharing.
Gotta love the steel bell. The E-bell does also sound good but nothing will beat a true steel bell.
Agreed. Locomotive bells should be made of steel.
you are absolutly right
if all of the trains had steel bells or bronze bells, it would be amazing
If I ever own a railroad I’m converting all my engines to mechanical bells
The e bell is just a speaker. It's on the new trains today.
The E bell I was always wondering if it was a speaker just can’t see the speaker it’s an odd shape the bell or it’s not It’s not really a bell
Ebell ❌
EMD Steel Bell ✅
@Goldfish u mean ebells right? Yea they’re just an annoying speaker that makes noise when u turn it on.
E-bells aren’t as cool as steel or bronze bells, but they are more reliable than the mechanical bells, especially in colder climates
There is a newer Ebell called ekyrail or skyrail Ebells they just sound electric
EMD bell takes the cake.
The DM30 & DE30's at LIRR still use a real bell (you can hear the actual air motors)
@@ct1660 Hate to break it but Martinez Sub died 2-3 years ago :(
@@mikehawk2003 Really?! Why?
@@AirchimeLTDproductions174 Sadly from Cancer I believe almost 3 years ago

The E-bell sounds realistic, but that bronze bell sounds very good. It reminds of the bell in Metra cab car 8473
Steel bell by far, reminds me of the good old EMDs.
Yea I love it the most!!
Yep
I Luv The Sound of the Bronze One !!!
Mine to
same
I also have a bronze bell here
bronze is W
The bronze bell 🔔 is absolutely FANTASTIC and gorgeous!!
If I had to choose my favorite I would have to choose the electronic bell. The other bells sounded nice as well.
Bronze bell: metro north cab car
Steel bell: freight trains
Electronic bell: Amtrak trains
Sounds about right. I like the crisper sound of the steel, though would love an ebell for the back of my bicycle.
Electronic is used for freight too
@@kishascape How can you fit it on a bicycle?
Steel bells are also used on most F40ph and Gallery cars owned by Caltrain and Metra and used to be used on VRE cab cars but after late 2009/very early 2010 their steel bells got replaced by the E-bells
Amtrak trains have mechanical bells. I'd say E Bell is mostly Gevos
Interesting, The locomotives owned by Armco Steel had steel bells on them, but had a lighter sound to them and rang a lot faster than normal, later switchers,SW1500's, had the usual bell found on most EMD locomotive models.
music to my ears, I love it
Wow I actually didn't know those bells were worked by compressed air.
I prefer the sound of the bronze bell. The ebell sounds like it's either synthesized or recorded to emulate that, but it's got a harshness to it that I don't like.
0:01 ES44ac bell in rolling line
0:10 Emd bell in beaming drive
0:20 E bell sound effect
the emd bell is literally made by emd and is the loudest on metra's cab cars
@@midwesternrail4729 yeah
The E Bell is used by Amtrak Genesis locomotives
The steel one is by far my favorite!
Its just like Trainz!
trainz675 ya
The Bronze one Is What the Norfolk And Western Diesels used
I've seen bells of New Jersey Transit Trains, under the side of the locomotive's cab. What's strange about them is they sound like the electric bell but look more like the steel one... I've always thought they were REAL bells. However, what struck me the most was that they were shaped like this; I originally imagined they would look more like wall-mounted school bells, old-fashioned fire alarms or telephone bells, thin and round. I think trolley car bells are more like that; after all, the pitch is different.
Literally every train in my area (Mostly CP Rail and CN Rail) use the E-bell.
Yo all of these bells are amazing. My favorites are the steel and ebell
0:20 E-BELL on the Northeast corridor ALP45DP ALP46

The award goes to:
Metra and Amtrak
And a few others too. MBTA, MassCoastal, Norfolk Southern, Pam Am Railways, Guilford Rail Systems, CSX Transportation, Caltrain, Alaska Railways, and etc.
Amtrak has a different bell
I have the feeling that vintage bell lovers will hate me by saying this but I prefer the sound of the E-Bell that's probably because I'm so used to it but I still like the sound of the bronze bell.
I agree too, it's just what I remember as a kid haha
I like the steel bell better
Ur insane
@@jeffhopper6393 no just the fact that most of the people I know that are locomotive engineers work on F40PH and they are all equipped with E-Bells. So that’s what’s I’m used to.
My favorite combination
EMD steel bell with Nathan K5LA
Graham White E bell with Nathan K5LLA
EMD bronze bell with Leslie RS5T
Here on Brazil around 2014 our local railroad (America Latina Logistica/ALL) started to put some new ES44ac in use, before that there were only SD40-2 operating, those are awesome but as a kid i remeber of being realy confused because it was the first ive seen a eletronic bell LOL
I Think The Steel Bell Sounds Most Beautiful.
lets be real we all know that steel bell is the best
🔔
ahh music to my ears
Graham white ebells are used on the go train and sun rail train
I'd say steel bell or e bell mostly because I'm used to hearing steel bells on MBTA F40s and e bells on Amtrak AEM-7s.
Ethan Rain the MBTA F40s have steel bells ?????
@@glassesgus2779 I think he meant metra
Fun fact: before the rebulid of Amtrak's AEM-7s the AEM-7s had steel, bronze and brass bells
i would assume the electrical bells are easier to maintain and are more cost efficient in the long run. i really have no clue
steel is my most favorite, i will usually hear the emd steel bell riding or near caltrain
I see all these people using the ebell by plugging it into an AC wall outlet. Its supposed to run on DC. Wouldn't using AC cause damage?
It's not plugged directly into the AC outlet. I have a small AC to DC converter rigged up into the power cord.
Bronze is so much louder clearer you can hear it continue to ring when the steel bel is ringing
So what ones actually the loudest and travels the furthest?
In my opinion the steel bell sounds best on video.
EMD bell ftw
Where did you get that 2nd bell? Sounds great
I like all of those bells.
The steel bell is really good
Nothing can beat steel bell
Even though Im use to hearing Ebells on PL42ACs, either the steel or Ebell
They all sound good. The E-bell is not bad, considering it's really trying to replicate the sound of a mechanical bell. The only thing I find is it's a tiny bit muffled sounding / the highs of the bell just aren't quite crisp enough for my liking. Nonthe less though, it's still good.
0:40 that synced perfectly
I would like to see a sparta remix of this -_-
I like all
2nd one is pure happiness
The bronze bell reminds me of old ge locomotives such as the u23 the steel reminds me of like a gp or sd series train the e bell is just put on newer locomotives
EMD Bronze bell
E Bell is the best
Tails The Swag Gamer correct
As much as I like the e-bell, it's just a speaker.
Osprey I Agree
@@j-bird1778 you could play any bell with it or farts or cat moews or whatever you want as long as its in the frequency range of the speaker
The steel one is the one I think of all the time
0:34 LOVE IT
I love the sound of the Bronze bell. Sounds like like an Alco would. It's also the loudest. I personally hate e-bells.
DieselElevators e bells are not that bad I like them and the bronze is not that bad ether and the black one was also pretty cool
the ebell was Recorded by the bronze bell
The electronic bell and the bronze bell have the same pitch.
"I personally hate e-bells" why? Because it's electric? Why does everyone have something against electricity, it's so childish and immature 😐
@@infinitehexington Mechanical bells are also electric, there's no difference there. I just don't like the sound of them, it's a personal opinion everybody is allowed to have. Also, I can't speak for electronic locomotive bells, but railroad crossing e-bells seem to have this tendency to break a LOT. Many crossings out here that get installed with brand new signals and e-bells end up getting a salvaged mechanical bell tossed on within 6 months because the new one died.
Where can I get the third one as a full kit?
I heard e bells on the EMD GP-40, EMD GP-35 and sd70mac In alaska
Durability: mechanical bell. Reliability: e-bell
Bronze bells sound like they’re meant for an Alco diesel. Steel bells sound like they could be from an EMD or GE unit.
My Favorite Bell Is E Bell
So used to hearing the E Bell (MARC train rider)
Bronze= NS former Southern GP38-2 High hood. Steel= NS SD40-2 and SD60M/E. Electronic= NS C44-9W and ES44AC.
Imagine looping this video XD
The Steel Bell Is The Best
hmm if i were to pick my favorite it would have to be the UKM bell just cause i grew up with it on the mbta commuter trains.
the steel bell is my favorite one :D
I like the Steel and E-Bell.
Now the big question, what recording are they using for that E-Bell?
Cool video!
I LOVE THE ELECTRIC BELL!! It's My Favorite!
Is sound like Trainz on first one
Bronze bell is my favorite, great resonance. Then the E bell, steel bell just sounds weak.
Where can I get one of those for my truck
0:12 MP15-AC BELL
I never knew they were air operated
What pressure are you running to the bells? I just bought one and trying to get it up and running.
Around 130 lbs, same as what they’d use on a locomotive.
@@lrichardm shoooot. I’m trying to set it up on a big rig. So 120 is as high as I’ll be able to go.
@@corey97140 120 should work just fine
@@corey97140 they need very little air to work but for this video we used 130 lbs.
@@lrichardm okay, I’m trying to figure out if mine is losing too much air. I rebuilt and polished the inner shaft that swings it left to right(mine is horizontal) but it has bronze bushings as the seal that may be too worn. Still learning a lot about this. But excited.
I hear the bronze steel and electronic Everywhere now
How much does the electric one cost?
I got mine for $300 but on ebay like 350$ to $450 sadly

Hi, can I use the sounds from these bells for a video game? Thx
the ebell sounds like the other 2 combined

The EMD Steel Bell & The E-Bell Are The Best & The Bronze Bell Is Alright
The steel one is familliar to me, because it used on common trains in indonesia. Like the CC203 (GE U20C)
Where did you get the E-bell?

That e bell is the one on the Amtrak Siemens train
The Siemens locomotive you're talking about is the ACS-64.
@@Hunter_Dawso and now in 2021 with the Siemens SC-44 charger as well as the brand new ALC-42. Personally I’m more of a GE kind of guy.

Must ask, what type of power is the E Bell? And how can I hook it too my truck? Do I need to use an adaptor or just direct wire it to the battery? I'm thinking of buying one
+Kyle Best - Right on the side it says 25-138 vDC. Quite the range.
AltoonaWorks wow. i saw someone plug it into the wall of there house. so will i have to get an inverter to make it work on my truck?
+Kyle Best No, it uses DC but you just need at least 25 volts. A regular car or truck battery is only 12 volts. In this video it's wired up with a bridge that allows it to be plugged into a 110 vAC outlet. It converts the AC to DC.
AltoonaWorks oh thanks! so in other words i dont wanna plug it into a AC out let with no converter?
+Kyle Best Correct.
How does an ebell work on the inside??
Where can I find one of these to buy ?
Nice i like the electronic bell better

Bronze one is best. :D
I Like The Train Bell On My Brazil New ES44ACI
I’ll take steel bell. It just sounds American and it really screams American quality. I am not trying to say the E-Bell is bad it’s good, but to have a genuine locomotive to pass by around town, I’ll take steel bell any-day. The E-bell is appropriate for passenger trains but never really worked out for freight trains.
Great sounding bells. What do the numbers on the top of the UKM bell say? I am curious what the serial numbers are for UKM bells.
E bell makes me want to cry. Personally steel bells for the win
