The Best Way to Cut Lace Leather from Scrap Latigo

  • Using up all that scrap latigo leather isn't the easiest thing to do. I usually find that I have a lot of this left over the course of a 6 month period or so. So in order to stay ahead of my scrap piles of latigo leather, I try to cut up some lace occasionally. This works to consume some of the scrap leather as well as saving me time when I do need lace leather for a project.
You can use the same process for chap leather and other softer type tannages that might make good lace leather in your shop.

You posted a revolver holster on instagram a few months back. Then the next day they took you down, despite you not doing anything wrong. There are hundreds or thousands of holsters posted there every day. I am interested in seeing you build a cowboy action holster and belt. And I'll buy the pattern pack too!

I’m not positive it’s the same but Tandy does have a wooden strap cutter they sell that looks similar to yours. The blade is held between two pieces of wood so no edge is exposed on top. We use a draw gauge for all of ours and aside from trashing some that have blood on them and having to buy bandaids it works great.

Thanks for the content Don. Tandys has a wooden strap cutter that might be modified and they also have a draw Knife which i have had trouble getting to work for me. Draw knife has a finger hold like a trigger and blade is open like yours. Have a safe and wonderful weekend.

Send me some close up pics of your lace cutting tool and I will make you a few more. I make a lot of specialty wood working tools and this seems simple enough.

wow for the scrap leather I make key rings with a company's logo's on them, one company through it was a great idea to put the unit number on them and dry them to match the equipment it was for too 3 months I spend making them all did it in the winter here they still send me to what they want to I did pick up a letter sit to use I have had 24 different punches made for them so I had to pick up keys for a company at a locksmith they handed my couple of there plastic key rings well I did turn them with leather one they have 24 different one I made to sell or give away too its great the gave given me a couple large boxes of rings to make them too yes it does pay the bills now

I always saw where You start with a 2" hole in the center then pull the end round & round to the end. This seems a lot simpler.

Love the video, but what was the knife you used to cut your rough strip edges off with? Was it home made?
