I wish I saw this vlog in the beginning of my BLE journey. Now I fully understand my new self and healed brain more clearly. I love the term of eating simple food! I'm definitely continuing to adapt my brain and food plan for this fantastic way of life. Already 54 lbs down and now I'm absolutely sure I'll be able to lose more weight and reach my goal. This is great! I actually stumbled across this principle some time ago. I don't eat any "legal" foods that stimulate my appetite, How I can tell if a food is a problem is that I want more of it, either at the time or the next day, etc. I keep my food simple, as near as possible to whole and raw, for the most part. It really does help with appetite control!
Dear Susan: You always amaze me with your brilliant way of explaining science. I completely believe that simple food changes something in the brain and minimizes cravings. I have been stubborn to follow BLE precisely but I keep improving every time I found that " my way" does not work. I cannot thank you enough!
I'm on day 10 of the 14 day trial... found this and mind blown!!! I tried looking up recipes and found videos of people cooking BLE approved foodie meals and literally got so overwhelmed I almost cried because the cravings kicked in strong. Oh my goodness. Keep It Simple... can do will do.
I think the taste buds get dulled down as you add more flavors to your food and become to require stronger and stronger to taste. If you make food simpler, your taste buds finally can taste flavors that were masked. Any food is so tasty after water fasting and you realize you really do not need all the seasonings and adding flavors to make your food palatable. It’s screaming for further study.
I did so much better on BLE when I didn't see the condiments part of it. For the first 26 days or so I'd totally missed that part. Now that I am back not using the condiments, and on simple food, it is going so much better again. Thank you for this awesome video. Can't wait to get that book.

Thank you. I think you are correct about the simple food. Last summer I did a supervised fast for 17 days, a person who studied at True North, it was amazing. While re-feeding ate simply and felt great. I had a right size body, but came home continued to eat free of Sugar, Oil and Salt. However, overate anyway and gained weight back. I still craved. Now I am doing the Boot camp and losing weight. I need the BLE and the digital scale to keep my weight in check and am so thankful for your story and sharing your methods with me.
Hearing what you say about the research on bland food, it seems to me that the food industry has been aware of this research since day one. For years our packaged food has become more and more flavorful with new flavors introduced every week. It is to the benefit of the food industry to have people with brains that say "eat more." This flavorful fact may have a lot to due with the obesity crisis. Did the national weight rise with the introduction of nacho cheese flavored everything? Some research for you Susan. Thank you for the vlog.
Very interesting, and I'm not sorry you shared it at all! I want to keep my life full and the best way to do that with bright line eating is, like you said, keep things super simple. Ain't nobody got time for that "fancy" food! I also appreciate the implication here that if my young children are raised on fairly bland food, they won't care that much about the more palatable food if they haven't grown up with it, like the tribe in Africa.

Well, this shows me why my gathering of all those yummy vegan wholefood cookbooks didn't help me lose weight. I actually enjoy simple eating - but my family doesn't think it is proper fare. I like nothing better for dinner than steaming some veggies, eating some beans or tofu and finishing up with a piece of fruit - now you've given me permission to do just this.
Wow. This is fascinating. My food is simple but spicy. In the last 2 years I have been using lots of cumin, paprika, turmeric, mustard powder, black pepper, chili powder, etc... Usually to spice up salads with beans and veggies. I have also been putting cinnamon, ginger and cacao on my morning oatmeal which weigh and measure and eat religiously. I started using these spices a lot more after I became vegan 2 years ago. Before I was vegan I ate a lot of fatty foods often sweet or salty. Although I am 50 pounds lighter than 2 years ago, I have had a hard time staying on the BLE/OA diet. I was actually 30 pounds lighter than I am now 1 year ago. Yes that means I actually lost 80 pounds in a year between becoming vegan and BLE after the first 60 fell off. I was consistent with my BLE plan for 3 months last year but I have had a hard time being consistent with it again. I measure and eat my meals but I can’t stop thinking about eating more when I’m done. Sometimes I can resist that but sometimes I cave in. I am going to bland it up and give it another try.
This seemed like bad news at first, but after being Day 9 of Boot Camp, I'm thinking, not so much. Because: 1) I don't have the cravings I used to have 2) there seem to be many foods in the world that are tasty to me, but do they create a set point? East Indian food I love. Did Indians have an obesity problem before Western food arrived? 3) I can make my own non-tasty milkshakes if I get stuck. I find it easier to fast than to eat measured amounts. But Susan also has other advice for dealing with plateaus.
But the small-portion lasagna group was eating sugar and flour: is it possible their atapaucity levels were due to those elements in their food, and not simply the tastiness? I’d like to see that study redone to exclude sugar and flour from that non-milkshake group. I find arugula, avocado, pumpkin seeds to be robust and delicious- is eating those with pleasure raising my set point? I struggle to believe that. I wonder if sugar is still the culprit here.
Exactly! Research, please! I have to wonder if SPT can add to the research people snapping pictures of their food journals, plus a daily record of body weight and overall well-being self-assessment. I would gladly upload mine as a matter of habit in the boot camp! Can you imagine the wealth of data that grad students could be sorting through for years to come???
This makes me so sad. Having tasty food to look forward to helps me forgo NMF. It also helps this not seem like a diet. I am so sick of raw veggies from my dieting days. I am only 13 days in to BLE and haven't had any cravings, but if at some point if I have weight or craving issues I will be willing to try to eat more simply. I suppose my taste buds will change over time so it won't be so difficult.

I’ve fallen behind in the videos and after I watched this, I got up the next morning and thought “AHA! This was filmed on April 1st!”. Sadly, I found out today it was not. Yes, for those of us who look for new creative ways to make all our foods even tastier - this is a huge bummer.
Now I understand why it has been so easy for me to follow Bright Lines and stay slim. I have lupus, and HAVE to follow a very bland diet, because I am allergic to so many (tasty) things, even "healthy" ones. If I eat them, I get migraines, so I don't! My food is not very interesting, so I don't crave it.
Oh Lordy….. this is the reason I keep trying to increasing the “ taste” of my food by combining different foods and seasoning into a “ recipe” ! Geez….. I’ve also experienced that adipose set point you talked about. It was180lbs but in last 10-15 yrs it has increased to 205🥴. In the meantime, Nov 2020 I had Covid and lost taste and smell…I thought that was reason I keep trying the recipes.😔 Also, after I eat my tongues has the sensation that it has been Burned by a hot liquid….it’s so weird. Btw…I’m 63 yo😁👍☮️ so…. All my efforts to increase the taste of my food has probably hurt my weightloss. Keep it simple! 👍😌Got it!
That's the same reason why monks eat simple food - staying away from passionate thoughts and needs which strong and tasty food brings. Religious fasting have the same goal. I'm sorry to hear that for me it's better to prepare the most simple BLE meals instead of how they were until now. I thought wow, I still can enjoy eating with passion, but it seems like that passion causes long term problems. I will have in mind this information from now on!
Very very interesting! I still think you can make food tasty with herbs and spices and cherries and nuts and seeds and low sugar ketchup and lime juice and fresh garlic and mustard!
I would love to see further research on this (if you would like to add it to your phone list). Sort people according to type of food they report as being palatable. E.g. there would be a group who found SAD cafeteria fare palatable, and on the other end of the spectrum there would be a group who reported e.g. a pot of home cooked cranberry beans cooked with bell pepper, onion, garlic, paprika, and garlic powder and served with < 100 mg added sodium (my breakfast today) as being just as palatable to them as the junk food was to the other group. Then proceed with monitoring adiposity set point in relation to the blandness/palatability, to be able to determine if natural/whole but still concentrated flavors (e.g. onion, paprika, etc) have the same effect as the processed/refined concentrated flavors (e.g. oil, heavy salt, sugar, etc). Research into changing standards of palatability after dietary changes are made, such as after adopting BLE/nutritarian/etc would be interesting as well.

Sugar, flour & fat causes weight gain & then our brain 'set point' for what we should weigh, goes up...a doctor confirmed this for me today. He also told me that obesity is a disease & once you 'have obesity' it must be treated. If you lose weight your body will want to get back to your former weight and then some. Even with 60 minutes per day of rigorous activity you will still continue to gain weight at a slower pace, nevertheless your body will continue to try to get back to your old heavier weight.
Not only do tribal people not crave fancy food, they are smart enough to know that it's bad for you. The BBC did a series where they sent women from the UK to live with women in tribal cultures. In one episode, a woman living with an Amazonian tribe showed a picture of her kid. It was her birthday and the table was laden with party food. The elder women of the tribe were shocked. "Surely you don't feed that stuff to your kid? Are you trying to kill her? It's lucky you came here - we can show you how to eat healthily!". It seems that we gradually lost this intuitive wisdom as food abundance and industrialisation took over.

Makes sense, also make sense why simple paleo works, you plate is just some protein and lots of vegetables.

You want to make sure you're still eating the recommended amount of food on your food plan. Eating less can mess with your metabolism. :)
