Thanks to this video, Greenland sharks have become my favorite sharks and I find every opportunity to tell everyone about them, usually when I'm drunk. lol
200 years? They found a ~17 feet long Greenland shark which age was estimated on at least 400 years, but it could be up to 520 years! Their metabolism works so slowely that they can get this old... it's super crazy to imagine that today there are Greenland sharks out there, 400-500 years old. They were born when in Europe were still medieval times (1521 - 1621).
Came to this episode out of direct curiosity. First saw the greenland shark in Jeremy Wade's River Monsters, season 5 in the Loch Ness episode and an addition special on this shark in some later season. Jeremy of course caught one with a fishing rod and, being a biologist and nature lover, he also released the shark like he does any fish. He used almost 300 feet of line if i recall correctly. Awesome creature (the Greenland shark I mean) and amazing to find them so close to shore. Nice of you to dedicate an episode to this remarkable animal!
Sometimes I wonder if you guys ever feel scared to jump into deep, murky waters like this. After all, the ocean remains largely unknown to humankind, and you never know what would be coming at you. Yeah, you guys are really great. I'll give you that.
The life of a a Greenland shark kinda sucks. 99% chance of getting crippling eye parasites, metabolism similar to that of a radish, and a face only a mother could love
Yes. That water is murky and difficult to see somewhat. So initially that water looks less fun compared to clear blue water. How based on what you were saying about the green land sharks and how many years they live to be. It must be the coldness that reserves the the speed of self usage. Also the green chains ⛓ of rich nutrient waters that play a major role of prolonging life secrets there? Thanks for sharing the footage with you entering the water even if there wasn’t any sightings of anything? Thank you Jonathan Bird!
Yes, this video came out before the new research paper was published that showed that these things may get as old as 500+ years, which makes them the longest-living vertebrates known on this planet!
It’s really hard to think that a shark was born 500 years ago by Newfoundland, Vikings have been on Newfoundland, but the first European sighting of Newfoundland and Canada was John Cabot and his men, and to think of it there might have been a Greenland shark right under their ship curious about the alien visitors

I just got my scuba diving license this year and am so excited for my first dive this summer and I noticed your wearing these interesting fins where can I get those?
Randomly got this video recommended to me again watched it many years ago. Crazy to think now we know they can possible live over 500 years and aome have been recorded that were born in the 1500s
I wonder if they are off the coast of Massachusetts, I'm attending a university in Massachusetts, I'm studying for my masters in environmental science. I'd love to swim w/ a Greenland shark. I know there are Great Whites, they are being tagged and tracked by satellite. Anyways happy holidays Jonathan
+Enmanuel Alba I beleive everywhere in america. Even in the Missisipi. You can find sharks. In Miami Florida are alot of dolphins tho. I'm not sure about sharks.
A few sharks can thermoregulate to a degree like the Mako and Great white, but the Greenland shark's body stays at the temperature of the water around it. When it's really cold, so are they. That's why they are slow.
... Greenland sharks (from baby to adult) are actually blind. they have a small parasite that latches onto their retna feeding off their eyes when they're babies, so technically he couldn't see you, that's why he was banging the rocks to attract them by sound. but I'm guessing you already know that now. 🙂 lol sorry I had to point that out, me being Canadian it just slightly triggers me XD I mean no harm with this comment
This channel is criminally underrated. This has some of the most professional content that I've ever seen on UA-cam.

It’s so awesome Greenland sharks are ancient the one researchers caught is 515 years old it was born 1509 around king Henry the 8th

My favorite too
When I'm drunk, I like to tell people about how much I love sperm whales for hunting the one thing I fear in the ocean: monstrous squids. lmao

Why are the scariest sharks the most harmless?
+CrazyClara101 LOL...maybe that's nature's way of messing with us?
BlueWorldTV I personally want to see a video on nurse sharks. they are intriguing animals.
Christopher Cross same
fun fact: they're ambush predators and often attack sleeping seals, wth their saw-like bottom jaw
But sharks aren’t even scary...
I think that Greenland shark is the cutest shark in the whole wide world.

when you get 0 results on every dive i bet you get really disappointed but i am glad you don't give up
your show is my childhood. ive always loved sharks and your videos
I was surprised that shark academy haven't review the goblin shark
It is hiding in the deepest part ocean. I am guessing 5000 ft or more.
They are INCREDIBLY rare, and are near 5000ft in depth
Recent discoveries prove the greenland sharks get older than 300 years
True!

Jonathan one question, y in every cold water dive u wear green force fins

they're in the same family of shark, in short yes they are

Hey John fun fact
Greenland sharks or sleeper sharks are the biggest sharks of the deep dark abyss
The leopard seal was probably like "Um,.........hello😶😐😕
I was wondering because I plan on going to Canada soon but can the salmon shark be spotted there?
They used to see them a lot in one particular bay in Alaska, but not recently.

still trying to wrap my head around the possibility of there being a shark that's 21 feet long and 200 years old...
theres a 50ft 50 year old great white, nicknamed the deep blue.
@@SpartanHawk It's not 50ft! She's 20ft. Which is a large great white.
@@Thulgore It's been half a decade, but regardless, thank you for the correction.
Some mor shark acamedy. YEEAAAaa!!
Are they aggressive or known to attack anything?
Well, people have found bones or Horses, a entire Reindeer, and a Polar Bear jaws inside Greenland Sharks.
They can't move very fast at all and it's hypothesized that they catch prey by ambushing sleeping animals so you'd be safe.
I didn't know there were so many anemones that far up north
Me too.
Hi those sharks look freaky but cool at the same time
I'm still watching this video after 4 years ago
I’ve noticed that Greenland sharks kinda look cute
I never knew that these sharks sometimes live in the St. Lawrence
Monster sharks, that would put a stigma on many species.
Do The great white shark HD next

Can u go diving in Miami Florida? Is there sharks?
+Enmanuel Alba I beleive everywhere in america. Even in the Missisipi. You can find sharks. In Miami Florida are alot of dolphins tho. I'm not sure about sharks.
+Enmanuel Alba Yes, in all of florida we have sharks, bull sharks, nurse sharks are the most common, we also have lemon sharks.
+Enmanuel Alba Plenty of sharks around Miami. Up in Jupiter, FL there is a dive shop that does organized shark dives.
What a Amazing Oldest Sharks in the World, 😊
They can have a lifespan to about 512 years and don’t become mature till they are 150 years old
Proud of ya, I would've swam up in only 1 minute. I don't like dark water where Shark's live. Geez.
I would love to see a video on parasites of the Sea.
I just noticed. These are all reuploads of previous videos.

So in recent study's how many Greenland sharks left?
dont u get shaky at all diving with all those sharks?
This guy got balls.
Small bioluminescent crustaceans sometimes attach themselves to Greenland sharks' eyes. That's one of the reasons they can't always see well.
They don't see those in the St. Lawrence for some reason.
Awesome I wish I could do that
Why do these species look like the sleeper shark?

But Jonathan did you see that lamprey that was on top on the Greenland shark
Yes I did!!
Try 400+ years mate
You are right! This video was released well before that research came out.
Aren't sharks cold blooded?
How is this shark able to survive the frigid waters of Greenland?
A few sharks can thermoregulate to a degree like the Mako and Great white, but the Greenland shark's body stays at the temperature of the water around it. When it's really cold, so are they. That's why they are slow.

Actually not all Greenland sharks have the parasite. And while the parasite obscures the vision it doesn't make them totally blind.
ohh, OK that makes sense, thank you!
