From www.kevincaron.com - Sculptor Kevin Caron answers a viewer's question about bending square tubing - and shows how to do it ....
Kevin Caron has a piece of mild steel 1/2" x 1/2" square tubing with 1/8" (.125) wall. Recently a viewer asked, "Can you bend square tubing?"
Yes, you can - if you have the right tool.
When you get a pipe bender, or a pipe roller or tubing roller like the one Kevin Caron is using, you get dies with it. He shows how the dies' upper edge helps hold the sides of the pipe to keep them from kinking.
With square tubing, you need square dies. On this roller, all three positions - the two idler wheels and the drive wheel that moves when you turn the handle - are square. It performs the same function to keeps the sides of the tubing from kinking.
    But why does it kink?
You are bending the tubing from the middle, not from the top or bottom. That means the top of the bend needs to get longer, or stretch, and the bottom of the bend needs to get smaller, or shrink.
If your pipe is too small for a die, again, the sides of the pipe that you're trying to bend are going to want to bow outward as you're trying to stretch the top and shrink the bottom at the same time. So make sure you have the right sized die for the job.
Kevin Caron has some square dies on his Harbor Freight pipe roller (which is different from a pipe bender). He begins turning the adjustment screw on the top of the roller, which forces the drive wheel down between the two idler rollers, to first show how you can bend with it, even though it is a pipe roller. You just use the adustment screw withou turning the large "ship's wheel" to move the metal forward.
Then he puts the metal back into the roller and wheels it back and forth as he gently adjusts the screw. Kevin Caron says one big secret is not getting into a hurry, but making your passes slowly to get a nice roll in the tubing.

The pipe is bending in the middle is a great tip. I wasn't thinking of it that way and it cleared up a lot. Thanks for sharing.

It's called the neutral axis. This is where the compressive and tension balances in the material section. The compressive strength is higher than the tensile strength, so the neutral axis is not in the center, but is anywhere from 35% to 48% of the thickness. In sheet metal they use bend deduction or bend allowance to calculate the position of the radius. In precision metal stamping, it is normally done by calculations backed by actual bend data.
After active duty, I went into the stamping and injection molding industry as a mechanical engineer. We had to hold extreme precision on bends and their angles. There is also spring-back so the inside bend radius and angle is smaller than the outside. This is very difficult to predict as the material strengths can make a huge difference. Both the chemistry and heat treatment of the raw material has a tolerance just as the physical dimensions that affect the bending.

Hi there, thanks for the video, if I need to curve a 1”x1” 16ga mild steel tube but the full length is 25’ and the max bend in middle is maybe 9” pushed out compared to a straight line. Do I still need a tube roller or is there a simpler way? Just need to make 8 PCs. Thanks in advance

I looked at harbor freight for the bender you have. It says round pipe bender. Do you have to change the dies for square tubing?

Yes you do have to change the dies for square tubing. They are available online.

Kevin, you're a great person to ask this. I have some 1" x 3" rectangle tube, 14 gauge, that I want to cut into 6ft sections and bend into an arc shape like a bow..so a long gradual curve over the whole piece with a center apex of ~16". So literally like the shape of a bow and arrow" bow shape. And yes the curve is along the flat 3" side. How can this be done?

    • @KevincaronSculpture
      @KevincaronSculpture  Рік тому +2

A pipe roller with square dies to fit your stock. Going to be VERY hard to do without hydraulics. I would either cut and bend and reweld the stock you have or.... 1 inch stock to roll the top and bottom of the curve and flat sheet to cut and weld the front and back on. You could try filling the stock with wet sand and capping both ends, then heat and roll or bend but I have never had any luck doing that.

You made it simple at 1:40 when you did a Hand Gesture, showing how your Thumbs get closer together, and your fingers get further apart. That could have been a good part of the lesson, telling people to watch what happens to the distance between the upper and lower sides.

    • @KevincaronSculpture

No slipping at all. You just have to go slow and let the rollers do their job. Thank you for posting.
