- / metalheadhippie I commute every morning to a job at a local community college; all day I work with students seeking writing assistance. Some just sit there and avoid the old guy sitting at the front desk; others laugh and joke with me: One student calls me "Mr. D" and always wants to hug me because I remind her of her grandfather. At the end of the day, I drive through the traffic as the sun goes down to get back home in the suburbs. I play with my dogs in the back yard, and I eat dinner with the woman who has shaped my life for the better for 30 years; we go to bed, and I wake most nights at 3 a.m., unable to sleep. A blur of faces appear in black and white grain. My friends and cousins, of whom less than a handful have survived; faces with no names from one night stands, faces from bars, dark, shabby apartments, the places the empty seek companionship, drink, and all the chemicals we put into our bodies. And I see myself shortly before I lost everything and became homeless as a young man, staring at the face in a mirror, void of feeling any sense of what it means to be human. Then I wake up, and I shave; once again looking into the man staring back in the mirror. The man who strives to find meaning and purpose, to be better in his path called life. And I like to think none of that young man's embers remain; however, always the thought, is it the young man or the old really staring back: And which is the puppet; which is the master? Anyways, I am not Townes Van Zandt, and this is just the version played by me, David, a guy with a head full of memories and a soundtrack in my mind. If you have found your way to the channel, and you decided to stay, I thank you. "Rake" by Townes Van Zandt:
And time was like water but I was the sea
I wouldn't noticed it passin'
Except for the turnin' of night into day
And the turnin' of day into cursin'
Well, you look at me now, don't think I don't know
What all your eyes are a-sayin'
Does he want us to believe these ravings and lies
They're just tricks that his brains been a playin'?
I have long thought that the productive impact on others is something measured by God and confirmed, sometimes, by a hug if we’re lucky, even more valuable than a salary. I’ve been coming to your channel over the past year or so because of the honesty. It doesn’t make us right or wrong, but I’ll take that over plastic any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Great upload and appreciate the description, brother man 👍🏻
