Very intersting video, I liked it a lot! If you would like Gill, I'd appreciate more of these kinds of videos please! Merry Christmas to my favorite English teacher from Sweden!❤️🇸🇪
Hi teacher, I'm from Uruguay and I'm studying literature (in Spanish of course) but i also want to learn English literature, so that's my next career. I love sonnets... The form is perfect and it amazes me. Thanks for the video. Literature is magic and unique in all languages!
That's amazing, I also love sonnets so much that I even wrote some when I was at High School (in Spanish, since it's my native language). I hope I can read good poetry in English.
@@engvidGill Dear Gill. I love so much your lessons, you’re a wonderful teacher. May I ask you: do you give private lessons online? Please let me know, I would like so much. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for this poem. When I was at College for teachers I didn't like literature and with You I just love it! More poems and newspapers please 🙌
Thanks Gill for the incredible video. The line: That mirror gave back all her loveliness I think mirror here is a metaphor for canvas because mirrors never lie and reflect your image as you are. Only a canvas with the help of an artist can give back her long-lost beauty. The model in the poem has left behind her youth and the artist has done his best to defy time and its pulverizing force.
Thanks Madam for Your lessons for all the year, we are looking forward for them in the new year too. Merry Christnas and happy new years ahead Dear Madam Gill. Greetings from Turkey.
Gil, you give so much enlightment to us, I truly want to hug you, thank you very much ma'am. Here in Brazil, we have popular poets called 'cordelistas' ('cordelists', maybe in English, I guess) and they say that when the phrase ends with a not precise semi vowel that the poem has the 'broken foot' - that poem is made with a 'broken foot' rhym. That also occuors when the poem don't fallows exatally the sylabic metric. But, those poems have beauty and porpuse too in their own way. Ah, just a tiny contribution: a sestet is composed by two tercets. Sorry for any error in that writting.
I have been working in the education sector for a long time. I still come back to Gill's channel regularly. She is a great teacher not only for students but also for teachers.
Although Pre-raphaelist paintings are my favorite, this is the first time that I listen to a poem. Thank you teacher for your lessons with reflection, your patience, you are the best 🌸💕😙 Happy Holiday and Happy new year 🌞
Thank you Gill! Your lessons are fantastic! It was 1984, I was 15, I knew my first 600 words of English and some grammar. Then I wrote this: I think of you, I dream you often, in a sunny dress, with a smiling face. You are so pretty, you are so nice, your charm will heat up the coldest ice. But in every tale, fairy or real, there is some truth, bad or very good. Living in the west and in the east, we are just beauty and the beast. *** I never wrote a poem in English again :-(.
Hello Gill, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from me in India! It is not a wonder then, the very famous poet was also known for her Christmas carols - In the Bleak Midwinter , being one of them. Thank you for bringing uo Chrisyina Rosette. Very captivating indeed.
Thank you very much for introducing to us this splendid achievement of Refailite circle of the painting that nourished her poetry This is simply beautiful with its story that emerges from the lines
I am a French student studying English at college and I wanted to thank you for everything you do. It helps me a lot, either to improve my English skills or for my studies. We are currently studying Poetry in Literature, and I struggled with this topic. Thank you :)
Many thanks Gill, that was marvelous. 👍 Really I enjoyed a lot with the lesson and also the unique way you taught as always. I'm interested in poems a lot, and I was really surprised when I found out that what a small world we have because we have similar rules in our poems in Persia. Have a great day, nice weekend, A Marry Christmas and Happy New Year, dearest Gill.
My favourite English painters are John William Waterhouse and John William Godward. Their artworks depict scenes from the daily life and mythology of ancient Greece/ancient Rome. Arthurian legends are also a subject matter of Waterhouse's paintings.
👏👏👏👏 obrigada por tudo Gil!!! Estou aprendendo inglês com o seu canal e compartilhando seus ensinamentos com amigos. Convidando-os a aprender com a senhora.👏👏
That's really a wonderful explanation as you delivered the entire poem with smooth and lucid narrative style I would like to watch more Videos especially of the most remarkable poetry and other genres of English literature as I myself am an avid student of world literature. Thank you.
Well probably there was a mirror just to enhance her body, multiply the image or give light to the canvas. We have to be aware that glass, mirror or metal was used throughout the history of painting in order to show the reflection of self portraits and painting. In one of the picture of the Dutch painter Vermeer (the anonimous art genius) we can see the reflection of the girl taken music lessons.
Hello I am here again This is a marvellous poem It is rich in artistic creation and life of painters and their models This is incredible Pre raephelite painting This is creative Thank you Gill
Thank you very ;uch for liking my commentary i e my two commentaries I only knew about this poem the day I saw it at Gill Engvid i was flabbergasted because the horizon in the comprehension in its resding is immense I knew another writer not Englisg whose charecter was obsessed with the face that will mean his art and it was his dream I try to read this poe; to know it read it again and again It is maybe a litrary lieu commun a topic Sorry i like this poe;e A Gallatee like Happy New year
I HAVE JUST SEEN IT AGAIN iT It is so moving so pregnant with artistic quality of life of which creation is a facet creation and creativity I googled on internet and came up to her all poems and it is lovely so enveloped in secrets
When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no sad songs for me; Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree: Be the green grass above me With showers and dewdrops wet; And if thou wilt, remember, And if thou wilt, forget. Poems and literature are so important to learn English. Thank you very much for this awesome video snd wish you Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. 🌲❤🎄
Hi Gill! Thank you for a fantastic lesson to accompany us in the festive season. I'm a bit puzzled with the way you pronounce Rossetti's surname. It being an italian name, one would pronounce both double consonants (ss & tt) in Italian. I understand that in English the double tt rule doesn't apply. But wouldn't the "ss" be pronounced "s" as in "assessment*, rather than "z" as in "rose"? Thank you in advance ❣️
Hi - that's a good point! I think because the Rossetti family settled in the UK, and Christina and her three siblings were all born in London, the surname has been 'anglicised'. I guess there are two different ways of pronouncing the name, as you describe :-)
Could the 'mirror' be the painting itself because her beauty is reflected in it.He didn't look at her as she is ,with flaws and all, but as a perfect damsel of his dreams.
1:12 LOL Yeah, she was part of the brotherhood. They said, "No girls allowed." It's funny how we are studying the Pre-Raphaelites at my college and we only have to read the Rossettis (Christina and Dante).
Gill, interestingly I have thought about to learn how write poetry; it would be the first poem for me to explore more about it. Would you recommend any book how to write poem.
Hi - I suggest you Google "creative writing poetry". Some poets also meet up with other poets for reading and commenting on each other's work - it can be quite a collaborative activity. Wishing you all the best with your plans :-)

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.
It seems like a painting by her brother, Dante Rossetti. Thank you.
