There are many Japanese varieties like that. I planted a Dekopon (shiranui) orange that is said to come from a hybrid between Kiyomi and ponkan (Nakano no.3). Kiyomi is a hybrid of a Miyagawa Wase mikan and a Citrus sinensis orange. Ponkan is a hybrid between mandarin and pamelo. So my dekopon has pamelo leaves, looks like orange and tastes like a mixture of everything and one of the tastiest oranges in the world. Long live Japan!
So I'm putting this comment here as a little bit of a marker for you! It's been 9 days since I started your fruit series and here I am on 171. I'm curious how long it will take me to catch up, but man am I loving everything about this. Without a doubt, one of my favourite subscriptions I've ever made.
The white pith inside the rind of citrus fruits is composed largely of a substance called RUTIN. That stuff is known to strengthen and elasticize our blood vessels. It is GOOD. Love your videos!
🖐️Hello from South Florida. I have learned so much just by watching a few of your videos. I subscribed because I feel that you can keep me motivated. Especially in these times. Working on boosting my immune system thank you
Citrus fruits are my favorite. Not only because they're delicious but also because their origins are hilarious, to the point where you get like 5 generations of hybridization in a single variety. It's great 😂
The common orange itself is a hybrid of Mandarin Orange (tangerines are a cultivar of Mandarin Orange), and Pomelo, both of these are ancestral citrus species and not hybrids. Other ancestral species are Citroens, Kumquats, Australian and New Guinea Limes (a group of several close species), Byeonggyul, Papedas (another group of several close species), Trifoliate Oranges, Clymenias (yet another group), and the Mangshanyegan. All of the ancestral citrus species originated in East Asia, Southeast Asia, India, Australia, and a few Pacific Islands. Some of these have played a much bigger role in creating our common hybrid stock than others, and a few might have not at all. There is also a grouping of non-citrus genera in the Citreae tribe of the Rue family (yes, citruses are related to Rue) that are closest to the Citrus genus and also produce a hesperidium (the classification of fruit to which all these belong). These are called the Remote Citroids and have a much broader geographic distribution. Even the non-citroid members of this family have fruits which vaguely resemble citrus in some way, including Rue.
♫♪♬ I have a tangerine, I have an orange. Uh! tangor I have a tangerine , I have satsuma. Uh! kiyomi ♫♪♬ ...sorry i cannot understand the names of the other fruits...
You know what the texture reminds me of? Pomelo! But of course the fruit itself looks like a large Mandarin orange and it tastes sweeter. Strange combinations! LOL
VERY high quality looking fruit. CCPP does not even list it. A beautiful looking citrus fruit. I would guess that there is something more than just tangor and various mandarins in its DNA, because of its huge size. I would guess pummelo is in there somewhere, but who knows where?Japan sounds like a terrific fruit stop in citrus season.
the vast majority of profits in the US are for the orange juice market, It would be great if this variety could be available for back yard growers though. the Citrus industry would prefer that people did not grow their own. For example, back in the 90's the city cut our tree down, they gave us a coupon for 50 Dollars so we could buy another tree. ( I have a 45Ft tall Valencia Pride mango tree now as a result ). the reasoning behind this was, that Citrus in people yards can harbor diseases , that then spread to other trees. Citrus is so susceptible to problems, of all the trees I have, only ones I have problem with are citrus, they attract every pest imaginable. now with the "greening" its a major problem, some farmers are giving up, and looking into other non citrus crops. ( Florida ).
agriperma Yeah I've heard about the orange industry going through a lot of issues in Florida. Its really a shame farmers are losing interest when there are so many varieties available.
the citrus industry would not have so many problems with disease if they were more diversified. monoculture farming is extremely dangerous both to profits and crop health, but it's so pervasive now, I doubt US farmers could manage any other way. it's great that the Japanese are maintaining and expanding diversity. i hope they will share their seed banks with us after whatever blight wipes out our entire citrus industry once and for all.
Looks so good! Loved the lesson about making hybrids, etc. Stupid question here-once a hybrid is created, can you then just plant the seeds from the hybrid itself and get the same fruit? I guess I’m wondering, because if you combined 4 varieties to get this one, for example, then can you just plant from the final hybrid to get the same thing? Also, You should consider a career in teaching if your body gets tired of eating swords and stuff! 😆Seriously, you’d be a great teacher. I could see you with high-schoolers.
I'm not entirely sure. I know when you plant seeds from a grafted plant often it creates a very different fruit. Like in my fingerlime video you can see how different one that is grown from a seed is. I think one day I may teach or do lectures. But don't have immediate plans to.
For a fruit tree in order to propagate it and have it breed true you have to make a clone of it by doing a bud graft onto the original root stock or another citrus that is compatible. When a plant flowers and produces seeds from being pollinated the offspring are diverse so there will differ from the original parents. Diversity is a wonderful thing but not if you want to have consistent fruit quality. Monocultures can be a bad thing. The potato famine wouldn't have happened if the potatoes in Ireland weren't identical clones.
All that explaining you lost me at number 37 lol. The citrus looks delicious and with the 4 bucks price tag, I'll definitely buy it if it's available here. Srsly I'm numb with the price after that crazy mango you had, plus this mutant citrus is huge!
I really wish you would have saved the seeds from all your citrus collection series. They become less viable very quickly so there might be a market for fresh citrus seeds from weird cultivars. Personally I would probably pay 2-5 dollars for a fresh seed.
Yeah. Even the normal fruits are ridiculously expensive. When I asked about the prices they say it’s because they have to import them, but that really doesn’t make any sense because I live in Scandinavia and they still have much cheaper fruits which are also only imported where as in Japan there is also tropical places and a lot of fruits that grow there. I just think it’s mosty because of the ridiculous packaging and quality standards how the fruit must look that really shouldn’t matter.

God speed Animelee
So glad I found your channel! Hours of entertainment.
Thanks Robert!
Truly

man these guys are breeding polyhybrid citrus like other people weed.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Welcome Elsa! In South FL you have a lot of great citruses to get your Vitamins with :)
Looks like a cutie mandarin the size of a grapefruit.
In my opinion, Setoka is best served peeled by hand. Not cut open like oranges. The same goes for many other Japanese citruses.
Citrus fruits are my favorite. Not only because they're delicious but also because their origins are hilarious, to the point where you get like 5 generations of hybridization in a single variety. It's great 😂
This is so cool! I've never heard of many of these hybridized fruits. It would be cool if we did this in AMerica more often

Navel oranges are the most common orange I see here in NYS. They aren't hybrids.
The entire purpose of his post is that, yes, they are. Navels cannot be grown from seed, they are absolutely hybrid lol...
Japan always taking stuff to an 11.
Yeah and I love Japan for it :)
Mandarins and tangerines are some of my favorites.
I super enjoy watching you eat good fruit, and have it described to us. I think I'm on to a new 'thing' !
I don't really like tangerines but this looks great, I would definitely try it if I could!
if you come fo california in the spring months, look for Shasta/Tahoe/Yosemite Gold mandarins at the farmer's markets. those are elite level mandarins
I'm addicted to your video. Keep up the good work!
If I ever go to Japan I'd definitely check out a setoka. I love citruses.
Good job with the visualizations
I’ve now watched this video 3 times over. I’ll be sure to pick up one of these when I eventually visit Japan.
Excellent description, thanks!
The way you describe the flesh as being like "caviar" reminds me of pomelo, which also has flesh that is in little pearls of juice and pulp.
♫♪♬ I have a tangerine, I have an orange.
Uh! tangor
I have a tangerine , I have satsuma.
Uh! kiyomi ♫♪♬

King1000Arthur valiant effort
I thought of that when I was watching the vid
Lol 😆
Merry Xmas Jared. GM fruits.
JARED Y U NO BRING ME SCION-WOOD!??!?!? Lol, thanks for keeping us fruit-hunters inspired!
Japan looks beautiful
The best part of this fruit is the rind. if you bite this fruit with rind, the flavor is boosted 100 times more(no joke).
I wish I could have smelled that. Satsumas grow in my area, so I associate this type of fruit with the fall and the holidays.
You know what the texture reminds me of? Pomelo! But of course the fruit itself looks like a large Mandarin orange and it tastes sweeter. Strange combinations! LOL
Yeah it breaks away the same way but with smaller sized pulp

absolutely. supermarkets were brimming with citrus fruit
You should try sumo citrus...the best citrus I've had in the states, TX to be specific.
Reminds me of weed strains how they combine multiple hybrids just to get something new
They have been doing that in botany long before weed.
We need a cannabis plant that grows tangerines as well lol
what do you do with the seeds from the fruits that you eat
Cool video. Its a shame that we have such limited citrus varieties here in the States
Gracias por compartir saludos desde Cancún México
Have you tried Dekopon/Sumo Citrus?
That looks fantastic!
Can you check out shiranui citrus, AKA Sumo, AKA Dekopon?
Excellent video
Wish we had those in the states
Diva Dinnett I'm surprised that they aren't more popular

Bubble Crossed We can only hope
I love the citrus fruits videos.
Have you ever tried the Lemato? I saw it on T.V. and it looks interesting and deliscious.
Which is the best citrus for sweetness and flavour?

I eat keto, but I can't stop watching you eat fruit.
You're a great presenter
is it possible to buy this tree somewhere online (seedling)?
All that explaining you lost me at number 37 lol. The citrus looks delicious and with the 4 bucks price tag, I'll definitely buy it if it's available here. Srsly I'm numb with the price after that crazy mango you had, plus this mutant citrus is huge!
Animania freak haha yeah $4 for a tangerine feels like a bargain after all that expensive fruit
Do you have a favorite fruit after all these things you have tried
I just saw this on Facebook, and someone said it’s a hybrid breed of Tangerine and Orange
Can someone explain the differences in taste? To me it all look like mandarin. In holland we almost only have mandarin
They're tasty huh? I like their texture.
21 Broadcast Yeah i love how these break apart
Did he recently change the name of his channel?
I really wish you would have saved the seeds from all your citrus collection series. They become less viable very quickly so there might be a market for fresh citrus seeds from weird cultivars. Personally I would probably pay 2-5 dollars for a fresh seed.
When you eat ,I feel the taste 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Were can I get information on this fruit?
Google "Setoka"
yo that was hilarious. thanks man
I really want a full family tree of all the citrus hybrids
Nice video
Alex Torres thanks!
Wow mind blowing 🤯🤯🤯
We need to create a new plant that is half citrus half cannabis. That would be so sick lol🌲🌳🍊🍋
Wait till you see the price of "gift" fruits. (Yes I know this is over 3 years ago)
Japanese specialty fruit prices are sometimes astronomical

When are we getting a knife / fruit combo review my dude 🍉 🔪
I want one!
I want one :3
Nice
And I reviewed it again!
Cuts it in half.
“It’s very easy peeling”.
Me: 🤦🏻♀️😭
Strictly we call Setoka.
Interesting, thanks for sharing
ひげぴぴぴ Yeah The Name Is Setoka
Jared should probably rename the video, since this video is the only search result for "satoka" besides anime bs.
So basicly what your saying is that oranges are super freaks.
When you realize he corrected himself because Japan's spring is our fall.
Filmed in another hostel environment, I see. :)
yep! I stayed mostly at hostels and capsule hotels while I was in Japan, regular hotels are crazy expensive
The 12 dislikes are from carnivores
So, more or less how Denisovans fit into modern Homo sapiens.
Im’a be honest, It really just looks and sounds like a normal orange
No, the skin is much thinner than on an orange and much easier to peel. It's like on a Mandarin.
Setoka Sapote
Like and comment ♥️
opening music is too loud on these video PepeHands
2048 in real life
Eating fruits in Nagasaki...glow in the dark pee for the rest of your life...
You always cut at Citrus around its equator. Not its poles. You're no expert.
No you don't.
