  • Shatner did a great job voicing Grand Pear, it was unique but well performed.

    It was stated. _Indirectly._
    Watch the way burnt oak's facial expression and tone of voice change when he knows why the apples showed up, or the way Big Mac wants to know more stories about his dad and Burnt Oak tears up.
    Or how Mrs. Cake goes from a smile to a frown when Applejack mentions her mother.
    This episode is filled with many subtle cues about them being dead that thinking theyre anything but dead is ridiculous.

      the fact that Granny says to Grand " i'm sorry, I should have told you all about *her* sooner." she isn't talking about the existence of the grandfoals, because she would have said 'them'. she's referring to Buttercup and something happening to her.

    • @amaccoy
      @amaccoy 6 років тому +14

      from what we see of him, I doubt he would leave his children willingly. Granny wouldn't necessarily need to tell Grand about Bright Mac if something happened to him, but Grand would care if something happened to Buttercup. my theory is that there was an accident that took both of them.

    Despite the resentment Grand Pear had by refusing to acknowledge his daughter's marriage to her new husband, Granny Smith stepped in and accepted her new daughter-in-law in open arms.
    EDIT: It's tragic he never got to forgive her so many years later.

    27:05 - Wow, friggin' thank you. You're the first blind reactor to this episode who not only acknowledged, but addressed _immediately_, that you would be okay if the show didn't explicitly state that they were dead. I've seen SO many other reactions/reviews that nitpicked "But we STILL DON'T KNOW if they're dead!" I would think that several clues (the way the reminiscers address the parents in the past tense, "something to remember them by", etc.) would've made it obvious. :P

      @booklover4330 7 років тому +3

      Yeah something to remember them by is what got me to believe that they're dead, plus added to the fact that everyone talked about them in past tense. They of course can't outright say it because of the rating, but it should be pretty dang obvious that they're dead at this point. And besides the story wasn't suppose to be about their death, but instead how they lived was what was important.

      Usagi1992 this episode is the worst episode of my Little pony. Grand pear is an awful character and pearbutter is just a reversed aj colour scheme with fluffy hair. Also where did big Mac get his red coat or aj get all her colours from. Also they never say they're dead directly, so this is the worst episode I have ever watched. +Book Lover He didnt feel sorry when he moved away, he didnt feel sorry a year after, he didnt feel sorry when his grand children were born and he didnt feel sorry after his daughter died knowing that he disowned her.
      but after what was possibly decades after he chose himself over his family we are suddenly supposed to feel sorry for him now?

    • @booklover4330
      @booklover4330 7 років тому +12

      Who knows how long he's been trying to gather up the courage to go see his daughter, he was probably terrified that she would never want to speak to him again after he had gotten over his stubborn ways. And we can't know how long it's been that he's gotten over his stubborn behavior of not talking to her, so he was probably trying to gather all of his strengths to talk to her. It's something that's sad but it does happen in real life. He feels guilty now for what he did and realizes what he did was wrong, so it's easier for me to forgive him. Now if he was still as stubborn as before not wanting any contact to the Apple family that would be different, but that isn't the case. I don't know, maybe I'm a little more of a forgiven nature but I do feel bad for him and sympathize with him.

    I like to think that Grand Pear had contact with his daughter, but it was distant and civil. Emotionally cool. After all, he did seem to know the apple kids and what they looked like. It's why he gave Bloom a free jar of butter.
    Also, the trees are heavily implied to be the seeds they planted to seal thier vows.

    .I think most people cried because they went into this with the idea that the parents are most likely dead. I am included in this, so when Pear Butter started singing her song i balled because you could feel how strong her love was and in the back of my mind i pretty much knew they were dead in present time. The though of such a pair being dead set me into tears. Showing the tree in the end cemented it.
    Also this might be a rumor but i heard that in the comics, it says they were killed by Timberwolves. I also heard rumors that two of the cast has flat out confirmed they were dead.

    • @luffyiscool

I love how there's so much detail in this show that you can still notice new things even after several viewings.

    Also, I don't see how anyone can say that their parents are alive after this episode. I like how people keep thinking they're alive, but the thing is...Why wouldn't they take their kids with them if they were drifters? How could they be trapped in another realm that is similar to limbo? All these excuses only make you think that Bright Mac and Pear Butter just abandoned their children...and from this one freakin episode you know damn well they would never do that! So, they're saying that Pear Butter gives birth to Big Mac, sends him to the farm, then AJ, sends her to the farm, then Applebloom, send her to the farm...If anything they'd KEEP their children with them, right?

    I know this is way late but. Something I read on another reaction to this episode is that the weeding was the last time Grand Pear saw his daughter alive but since he knew who they were it suggest that Buttercup had sent letters or even photos of them to him. Maybe she was writing letters every so often to keep him in touch with her family until he never got a letter again and finally worked up enough courage to go see his daughters kids.

    this is just for all of y’all who still think they’re somehow still alive
    given how they talked about their parents in past tense and saying stuff like “if mom and and dad were here they would be so proud”. that’s stuff you would say about people or in this case pony when they’re dead.
    they obviously can’t say they’re dead cause kids show but with all the hints and the past tense talk they’re gone.
    if they were alive
    why would it be so hard to talk about the feud?
    why would it be so hard for mrs cake and mayor mare to bring up their parents?
    i see no evidence backing up the fact that they’re not dead other than the fact that they didn’t out right say it.
    it would be poor writing to make such a emotional episode talk about them as if they were dead and they just suddenly show up alive and well.

I got tears in my eyes thinking about the episode even days later. Your reaction was the second time I've seen the episode since it aired early, and it still struck my heart just as much. I hope I didn't come off as harsh, that wasn't my intention, because I really love your reaction videos. I tend to feel everything more deeply and intensely than most people; it is a side effect of being overly empathetic and sensitive. Which makes stuff like The Perfect Pear and the fanfiction My Little Dashie really strike emotional cords. I don't mean to imply I felt sad the entire episode, quite the opposite. I found the episode fantastically beautiful, and lovely. The romance and love between Bright Mac and Pear Butter was completely enamoring, and it brought tears of happiness, but it also has a bit of sadness with them as well because they are gone.
      I apologize for writing a novel length response.

    This episode just makes me always tear up and tugs at my heart. The Romeo and Juliet aspect of the parents love story was beautiful and the song was amazing. It really is a song that anyone in love can relate to. And the fact that they subtly say their parents are no longer there with them. It really tugs the heart when you realize Grand Pear never got to apologize to his daughter for leaving her during the wedding. Granny clearly holds this against him for years until the end of the episode. She let go of her hatred for Buttercup the moment she chose to be an apple, giving her the comfort of the Apple's home. It's great seeing how different the Pear's family is to the Apple's family

    People keep asking about the trees twisting. It is possible. My yard has an Oak and Pine growing together; almost as one tree. Trees also have been know to grow around things. In fact there are cases where people have left things like bikes against the tree and forgot about them; when they came by the old tree again after many years, the object was almost completely engulfed by the tree.

    Although it's virtually certain that AJ's parents met an untimely death, we can take some comfort in knowing that they must have had at least a few good years together, going by the age difference between AB and her two older siblings.

I love Bright Mac and Buttercup, they are wonderful characters(they are the sweetest little pony couple I ever did see) and I respect how their story was revealed to us in this fashion. Another fantastic episode from S7 and I'm looking forward to what's next!

    It's kinda funny, the first time I saw this it didn't affect me at all, but pretty much on every rewatch it's been like clockwork: as soon as Gran Pear says "I'm so sorry" my eyes start getting ever so slightly moist and I do this kind of stiffled sniffly-smile, and another wave hits at the very end with the camera panning away to Pear Butter's song. I think Shatner's acting and the music pretty much made this episode for me, in the end.

    I love this episode! It is more then likely my second favorite episode of the series, my favorite being Amending Fences. (Amending Fences just hit me on a personal level). This kind of story isn't new, it basically is Romeo and Juliet. Star crossed lovers whose family can't stand each other. But it's just a plot point that may be so cliche it just works on so many levels. And for MLP FIM to blow this kind of plot out of the water for me and make it amazing; well that is just great to see. It made me cry so much the first time I had watched it, and even watching it now still gets me teary eyed/and even crying. The Apple parents are definitely dead, the hints before this episode with the series, the hints in this episode, plus the line they left something to remember them by, that just sells it to me. Plus everyone acted in a way that you would if someone you cared for was dead, yeah there's no denying it. Talking about old times, and the like. I can't see anyone having any doubt about them being gone after this episode. (Unless some people are just in denial). Such an amazing episode, love it so much! Great reaction and can't wait for more
