The fact that he tried this off duty doesn’t make sense. If he really wanted to take a plane down why didn’t he just wait until he was the flight captain? Something about this story is really odd.

The real scary bit of this is that he was a pilot, just wasn't working at the time. What if he happened to be the actual pilot and then get those dark thoughts in his head, maybe even when the co pilot gets up to take a piss, a lot more likely to carry out his plan. Alaska Airlines needs to up their game in psych evaluations on pilots me thinks.

From what I heard, he did NOT attempt to grab the throttles, but to full the fire bottles, which would have made the engines unusable. This reminds me of Fedex 705 from Memphis to San Jose where the guy in a jumpseat outside the cockpit tried to hijack and crash a DC-10. The crew fought him and won.

This would be the ultimate way to setup a disliked employee. You and your partner just plan this out. Maybe they have a sign and they both create a wrestling around sound. One yells out, “Don’t touch that. You’ll kill us.” Then you can both “subdue him” and “put him in cuffs in the back jumpseat”. Just saying everything isn’t always what it seems. And going solely off of witness statements and audio, can be a hindrance and a road block for potential undiscovered possibilities.
