Magic song. Not many bands(people) can write lyrics line this. Was never huge popular right ? But ultimate interpretation of this song as a classic Irish ballad so engrained in my head my mission is to get Christy Moore to record it. You get me now?!
Always remember seeing a poster for a gig at Uni mid 2000's with Maximo Park for £7.50, glanced it, walked past, didn't go in, regret it every time I listen to them
I’ve rediscovered this song after 13 years... Brings all the feels! Amazing lyrics, melodic tune. Fantastic voice and accent, just perfect! Once saw them in Montreal, many moons ago... now I would go back and relive again and again.
skunk39 I listened to this a lot on public transit around 2009-10, it became an addiction. The perfect song for walking in a big city ! Still has all the urgency and slick symmetry about it .... it’s really a masterpiece.
spotify randomly had this in one of my daily mixes, it was the first time I heard this since 2009 or ‘10. my best friend at the time gave me a mix cd for christmas and this was the first song! now i’m hooked, it takes me way back to my teenage years ❤️
@@puccini4 the smiths maybe? This is basically a song performed in their style. The lead guitar has Johnny Marr's influence written all over it, not to mention a set of brooding lyrics
I discovered this band in 2016. They are incredible with those poetic lyrics and catchy melodies. This song always touches my heart in a very different way. That feeling cannot be expressed. I am really thankful for this band💌 "Why does every let down have to be so thin?"💓
When I discovered this band a few years ago, I thought I might have overlooked it in the 80’s when obsessed with INXS, REM and the like. Mixes great with fine pop rock of that era and draws heavily from that influence. Never tire of it, great energy and lyrics.
Heard this song yesterday in a small cafe in Dublin ❤ didn’t thought of this song for such a long time! Now it’s on my playlist 😍 Loved it back then and still do!
Probably better to be that way, not sell-out, just the music is appreciated. No egos, no "celeb status"...if I had a modicum of their talent I'd want it to be like that.
[Verse 1] Night falls And towns become circuit boards We can beat the sun as long as we keep moving From the air Stadium lights stand out like flares And all I know is that you're sat here right next to me We rarely see Warning signs in the air we breathe Right now I feel each and every fragment This paper trail leads right back to you… You say you need me to step outside [Chorus] You spent the evening unpacking books from boxes You passed me up so as not to break a promise Scattered polaroids and sprinkled words around your collar In the long run, you said you knew that this would happen [Verse 2] This is something new But it turns out it was borrowed, too "why does every letdown have to be so thin?" Rain explodes At the moment that the cab door closed I feel the weight upon your kiss; ambiguous You have to leave. I appreciate that But I hate when conversation slips out of our grasp [Chorus] You spent the evening unpacking books from boxes You passed me up so as not to break a promise Scattered polaroids and sprinkled words around your collar In the long run, you said you knew that this would happen [Bridge](x2) Two bodies in motion This is a matter of fact It wasn't built to last [Chorus] You spent the evening unpacking books from boxes You passed me up so as not to break a promise Scattered polaroids and sprinkled words around your collar In the long run, you said you knew that this would happen [Outro] The pounding rain continued it's bleak fall And we decided just to write after all After all The pounding rain continued it's bleak fall And we decided just to write after all
Love song for a long lost friend. Time passes and you grow apart, but it's hard without a break up, there is no closure. We would've gone to a Maximo Park concert back in 2012, but decided not to, can't remember why.
Oh, how I LOVE this song! I still remember, when I first heard it, more than 10 years ago now (which makes me feel nostalgic ...). Maximo Park really is one of the few bands who have their own, unique sound - in the best way I could imagine.

I was there too! One of best festivals ever. Freevolution festival 2007? The whole energy around the place was amazing that day. Think the whole of the teenage/early 20 generation that was from the North East came to see them at the Quayside that day. They were absolutely huge up here around that time. Especially with the Northumbria uni connection.

Gave me goosebumps listening to it again after nearly 5 or 10 years. I used to play it on guitar with my best friend in a different life...
Hope this new life isn't too hard ♥️

Absolutely x we peaked as a species

One of the most underrated lyricists in years. It just hits different

UNDERRATED.... Amazing Song

Not by me :-)
Unbelievable. Billingham genius.

Best feeling when u finally find that song u were looking for ages

Might be my favourite song ever. The lyrics are so clever & hit me straight in the feels.
This song pops into my head from time to time, there's something incredible about it that I can't put my finger on

What a line
It's so weird, Maximo Park just bring back memories...vague memories. I don't know why though!

nostalgia of what?
Because their lyrics are unbelievable. If not genuine nostalgia, just sheer relation to the words.

always a big fan of this band as they hail from my part of the uk but this is by far their best tune - so poignant
Makes me feel nostalgic for the mid to late 2010's.😢
God damn this is an amazing song. The bridge is like a tribute to Johnny Marr.
The intro to the song really does resemble Johnny Marr’s style of playing.
Oh, take me to the bridge.

We can beat the sun as long as we keep moving
From the air

And all I know is that you're sat here right next to me
We rarely see

You passed me up so as not to break a promise
Scattered polaroids and sprinkled words around your collar
In the long run, you said you knew that this would happen

You spent the evening unpacking books from boxes
You passed me up so as not to break a promise

I'm still giving it a listen every now and then, mainly cos they used to practice in our kitchen, but also there's some damn good tunes in there.
Love this song. The chorus is such fun to sing along.
