Lyn Joy had various jobs as an animator, worked at Warner Brothers. She illustrated for a comic book series called Wimmins Comix. I didn't find anything on Otho after he put up the sculpture that disturbed the building dept.
I really think these shows are wonderful windows into the sociology of American life. Anyone wondering why we are the way we are today, need only watch a number of these shows. While it's true these folks are "projecting" a little bit for the cameras, it's still, truthfully, FASCINATING and EXTRAORDINARY stuff!!!
What a loopy episode! The First couple were pretty close to being "beatniks," and the second part of the video was so out of synch that I thought I was watching Gene Kelly and Jean Hagen in "Lockwood and Lamont's" first talking picture, as portrayed in "Singing in the Rain"!
Sorry I couldn't fix it-- I'm making sure there are two more episodes coming up shortly since I know this one isn't really watchable towards the end. You're best off pretending it's a radio show when it goes far enough off. :(
As far as the first couple, I think Otho's friend was spot on in his description of Lynn Joy when he introduced the couple. With the second couple, it is unfortunate that their segment was so far out of synch. (Thank you for your efforts, Gary. I hope your head feels better by now!) The interaction between Shirley and George Fenneman needed to be seen, not just heard, and that badly out of synch made it much harder to appreciate. Since a lot of Groucho's humor is accompanied by leers and other facial expressions, I have to assume that his audience knew him well enough to fill that in when they listened to the radio version of YBYL. But there have been a number of times on the TV version when his guests had to be seen to be believed. And while we might be familiar with Groucho, the guests' reaction to him was lost on radio.
i tried to search the artist and found two articles about the "Internationally famous"(sic) sculptor Ortho Pettijohn in the Torrance Press and his art was a 45 foot abstract pole in front of a gallery which disturbed the building department.
He died in 1980; she died in 2008, a retired Warner Brothers animator and comic book artist. Used her maiden name at the end (Kroeger) and so was probably divorced.
also, the answer given at about 10:30-10:45 the cities listed they answered new jersey. new jersey also has every single one of those cities in it. (i'm from there originally thats why i know) and the pronunciation groucho uses for newark is the one in NJ. him originally from NY i guess thats why. the one in delaware is pronounced new-ark. the one in jersey is pronounced new-erk. technically, they had the money right there.
If you watch that segment again, as painful as that would be with the out of synch issue that had Gary banging his head against the wall, notice that Groucho introduced that question a little differently than the others in that category. He stated that they were the four largest places in that state. That would disqualify New Jersey. Of course, it would also disqualify Delaware since it the list omitted Wilmington, the largest city in that tiny state for many decades. Bottom line: whoever was in charge of creating the quiz questions and judging the quiz dropped the ball on this one. And you are absolutely correct on the different pronunciations. Since Newark, Delaware doesn't normally come up in conversation in the NYC area, when it was only a dot on the map, I didn't know it was pronounced differently than the city in NJ. I learned it the first time I heard the conductor announce the station when taking the train from NYC Penn Station to Orlando. And then there's Newark in upstate NY ... :-O
I looked it up. Elsmere is not a town. It's a neighborhood of Glassboro. Groucho said at the beginning of the quiz they should be cities or towns. So New Jersey would not be correct for that reason. But like Lois said, Groucho said 4 largest for that question and so that disqualifies Delaware, too.
I love these interactions. The contestants are an important part, and most of'em are not exactly run of the mill--it's L.A. for one thing. That first couple charmed my socks off, very creative; clearly 'starving artists' . .
He certainly was falling all over himself, but when a girl compliments you , I guess I do too, like any other man in America. I was born in the middle 90s, but my grandparents theme about these shows. They are so facinating to me.
in the case of a progressive error, in which the file goes out of sync further, the longer it runs, you "stutter-cut". make note of the end of the video and how far out of sync it is. if its 3 seconds you take 3 seconds and the total length of the desynced segment and divide it up into multiple cut every minute or so, of the audio. each cut would only be for maybe a quarter second or so. like i said it works if your very determined, but a pain unless the desync is very drastic
I worked on this so long ago, I cant explain from memory what the specific technical snafus were, but believe me, I do know how to fix a/v synch problems (and I have fixed many other videos posted here successfully). No question, with enough work put in, it can be fixed. But after I'd spent about 5 hours banging my head against a wall, I gave up on this one. Some mpg streams, when they're corrupted enough, are just not easily fixable. Sometimes they can only be fixed by reencoding the entire thing, which has other serious drawbacks in degrading the overall quality.
Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life yeah i know what you mean... there have been a few files over the years bad enough i've just deleted them... atm i'm trying to finish this to get my formal package made up before i might be a feral cat again. i sent u a msg specifically about it
there actually is a very easy way around sync issues. its more "round-a-bout" but it will fix anything. rip the video into its own file without the audio. rip the audio into its own file without the video. watch the video very closely and note the exact time it goes out of sync. cut the audio file at exactly that point in the audio to snip the out the time period that desyncs the file. then, remerge the the video and audio with any editing software you may choose to use. i only do this in the most extreme of case, as i admit, its a bit of a process. but it always works
Would probably also need a speed adjustment for the audio, if it goes gradually out of sync. Audacity has this as one of its effects -- you can slow down or speed up the audio without affecting pitch, so the voices still sound normal. Time the video segment, and then adjust the audio to have the same length. Fiddly, but it should work. And by the way, I think the English guy's middle name is probably spelled Boyd, despite Groucho's quip.
On an irrelevant side note, Douglas B. Calderwood could almost have been the doppelganger of science fiction writer Robert Heinlein. I almost thought that's who it was if I hadn't been listening.
Good show, the first couple was one artistic intelligent couple, just made for each other. She's quite sexy. Notice how old everyone is in the audience in the last screen shot. All look like seniors.
Because the audience is old does that infer that they must be in the wrong room ? Well I'm almost 80 years, and Graucho still has me bursting at the seams when I watch and listen to him.
Boo Boo's wife is sooo adorable. Love her silly language . Wonder what eventually happened with them . Hope they had a happy life .

I really loved this[1st] couple. Clearly 'starving artists' and creative people.
I think he past away in 1980.
Otho looks like Ernest T Bass played by Howard Morris! Thank you for sharing this, I enjoyed it.
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking!
@@msa4998 how do you do,

Tweaky Bell (Lyn Joy Kroeger-Pettyjohn) passed away on March 29, 2008 at age 78 in Los Angeles.
“You now have one right,” George said after she says she’s always had a crush on him. Funny!

So was What’s My Line from the 1950s. We’ve lost something as a society since then.
The audience must've been in stitches from laughing! Groucho was a genius! He busted every contestant's chops!
I really think Groucho himself gets a kick out of some of these contestants . . Have you seen any shows in which Groucho himself bursts out laughing?
Interesting seeing Groucho and the female contestant talking with each other’s voices!
'He was studying salmon in the can'! Great wit and so quick!
Word's 👍👍👏👏👏👏
Boo boo and that wife must really be wild about each other.
Man that first couple was real gone.
That older woman had a weird personality. She is one of the first I’ve seen on this show that speaks her mind.
Lynn has a hairstyle like a vulcan
sweiland75: NO! She's "LOUISE BROOKS"!....N.S.
