Ight Isayama recently conceded his writing for the final chapter wasn’t great. There was a lot of thematic regression too.
If wanna discuss/debate please join my discord.
Link in description.
The ending do be bad. Don’t text, Discord.
It was all set in stone. His future was unchangeable. So could never surpass his father and break out of his roles and forge a new future like what he was setup to do since the uprising arc. He was never born free.
my guy hajime isayama just completely ruined the epicnes of chapter 120 to 123 and chapter 131 with chapter 139
Also if anyone genuinely disagrees don’t write anything just join my discord we can debate there.
Hajime isayama wrote eren to have this complete and masterful grand plan during those chapters to manipulate his father to taking the founding titan to sending memories back eren Krueger as well for over a year and but since those chapters came out we thought eren was badass and a genius and hajime isayama just ruined all of that in one chapter
They’re actually so pathetic trying to justify character regression and toxic relationships

So this is what Grisha saw? No wonder he asked Zeke to stop Eren.

I thought when Isayama said he wanted to hurt his readers, it was by killing all of his characters, not their characterizations...
I think that’s what he was going to do. But it was too cruel and dark to be drawn, so his company pressured him to change the ending, and it ended up like this. It is really hard to believe an author that drew kid been trampled in 131 would conclude the whole serie with a happy ending. And it really doesn’t make sense about Historia’s pregnancy too. My guess about his true ending is that Eren ended up destroying the entire world, and killed everyone including Jean, Connie, Mikasa and Armin. And returned to Paradis, holding the baby and said “you are free”, Eren turned out to be the baby’s father.
@@summerwind7075 Source?
Facts
@@summerwind7075 the original ending was supposed to be darker, but I don't think everybody was supposed to die. If the baby was the only survivor, it would exist in a world with a handful of people, namely citizens from Paradise since many Yaegerists were killed.
I think the original ending was Eren replacing the Founder Ymir, allowing her to die and go on to the afterlife (or be reborn as Historia's child), and Eren is forced to replay the events of his life over and over. As soon as Mikasa kills him, he wakes up being born from Carla, and Grisha picks him up and says "You are free." Then it ends, because Eren is not free, except he is, because he chose to sacrifice his freedom so that everyone else could live, using the rumbling to scare the world enough to not go to war.
That's just my theory though.
Search “isayama changes ending” there are a couple of interviews where he stated that he wanted snk to end similarly like “the mist” a stephen king book where the ending is tragic and then he changed his mind to fit a more peaceful ending like “guardians of the galaxy”.
We wont know if someone told yams to change his ending but hey there’s proof of him exploring his choices.
I honestly think the ending he chose was okay. Nor bad neither good.
Hope he’ll give us a statement where he explains his motives and the ending or go the end of evangelion route and give us his initial “the mist” like ending.
Aot still remains a masterpiece imo.
Eren in ch. 139:
I just keep moving backward..... until My character arc is destroyed.
BRUH im in tears
No in the end he stayed still and stopped moving forward
Mate he literally accomplished everything that his character arc set to, y'all are really just over exaggerating and misinterpreting everything 🤨
@@Osama-KIN_TMZ01
Armin: Eren you destroyed the world. Why?
Eren: I dunno fate and shit. I sleep.
Armin: Oh btw mikasa might mov...
Eren: REAL SHIT. I WANT MIKASA TO ONLY LOVE ME AND I DON'T WANT TO SEE HER WITH ANOTHER MAN.
TATACAW TATACaW IM A BIRD.
I JUST KEEP MOVING FORWARD..... UNTIL 80% OF MY ENEMIES ARE DESTROYED.
MIKASA MAKE SWEET LOVE WITH MY DECAPITATED HEAD SO WE CAN SATISFY YMIR'S WEIRD FETISH.
you were saying?
@@user-iv2qo1fz4j Eren is not a slave to fate he is a slave to himself. He said himself that he would still do the rumbling anyway. Eren saw the future and saw that he could not lose his humanity in the end. His fight for “freedom” failed because he couldn’t become a devil. So he did the rumbling in an attempt to achieve this “freedom” he thought was freedom. Eren did it of his free will not because of fate.
Eren tried to lose his humanity by pushing away his friends. In his final moments he spills his REAL feelings to Armin instead of suppressing them.
Eren is not a literal bird, the bird represents his freedom.
When he says “I just keep moving forward” he is convincing himself to keep moving forward to kill 100% of his enemies. He stops at 80% when he faces what he’s doing and can’t handle it. He stops moving forward in a world that moves forward ON ITS OWN. He doesn’t lose his humanity.
Mikasa kissed him in a non weird way. And the kiss itself is not what freed Ymir. Mikasa showed Ymir what true love is, not slavery by being her own person. Mikasa let go of Eren because of what she thinks is right. It showed Ymir that love is not obeying orders, whether they are right or wrong. Ymir was free from obeying the king’s desire to let titans reign. That was not love, that was slavery. Mikasa taught her that, to be her own person.
You were saying? You were saying exactly what they said - over exaggerating and misinterpreting everything.
Eren: why reiner? Why was my mother eaten by a titan?
Also eren: so anyway im gonna sacrifice my mother to unite the world
@Cyrax yes but eren wouldnt have seen her death by that way, it wouldnt have left the same mark
No. eren said that on purpose. It was to make reiner feel guilty and had mental breakdown. The fight in liberio would be different if reiner joined from the beginning
Eren didn’t mean for his mom to die he just sent Dina forward to save Bertholdt and of course Dina would eat Carla she said she would come back to Grisha in whatever form she takes.
Eren asked Reiner why his mom had to die, even though Eren was guilty of it. Remember the reason the guy who wanted to be judged was mentioned that chapter, he is representing Eren.
He didnt kill his own mother, that was a mistranslation. if you read the chapter he says that he had no real control over anything. it was his fate all along, which is ironic since hes a character that valued freedom over everything and ended up being the most caged one of them all
@@daughterofpalestine7130 ironic because he was a slave to himself. His fate is something he would still do in an attempt to gain the freedom he thought he didn’t have
Damn honestly I'm disappointed, not because my ending didn't happen but because it just left me confused. Isayama said Eren saw Mikasa as mother figure rather than a love interest and thought people who grew up together being lovers was weird. And now all of a sudden, he makes Eren randomly have feelings for her even though it was never shown in any case. He even gets questioned why he did and says he doesn't know why, just destroys his character. Everyone who became a titan now suddenly turning back to normal just ruins the moment. Honestly what was the point of making Historia having a baby such a big deal then, it just turned into a random subplot. If Eren manipulated Dina then why did he question Reiner why his mother died? It makes no sense whatsoever. In my opinion AOT has a disappointing ending and that's a shame.
I have a theory. This is not the true ending isayama wanted to draw, the real ending could be very cruel and dark, and the author received pressure from his company or the government, they told him to change to a different ending otherwise this manga would be linked with anti-humanism or fascism, and it could cause huge negative impact to the society. So in order to prevent that they forced him to change the ending. And they forced him to make the ending so bad that no one even wanted to remember it anymore so people won’t become addicted to those dangerous ideologies in the story.
@@summerwind7075 man i wish that you are right but i just feel that this is it
@@hama1712 Isayama said in the interview that his goal was to hurt his reader, and he wanted his readers to have a strong impression about his manga. But if you read 139, it just doesn’t make any sense about what he said. My prediction is that the real ending was so cruel that Eren ended up destroying the entire world, and killed everyone including Jean, Connie, Mikasa and Armin. The only thing left was the ruin of the world except Paradis island, and Historia’s baby was actually Eren’s, otherwise it wouldn’t make sense for her to get pregnant. Man, i know i'm overdosing on copium, but this can't be it, there's no way this is it. We'll definitely get a 140 Epilogue Chapter.
Chapter 140: Umi da
It stars with Armin feeling more down than ever before, he slowly starts becoming more and more like Eren, especially realizing that Eren's sacrifice was in vain, and that Paradis is simply being faced with an overwhelming might they simply cannot content with, with their backwards technology, no more titan powers, and low numbers. Mikasa wants to comfort Armin as she can't bear to lose him too, the same way she lost Eren. Eventually Armin pulls the same card that Eren did, and tells Mikasa that Eren was right, she was indeed always a slave and much like Eren he has hated her since they've met. Armin then runs in a hurry to the tree on the hill, where they raced to as kids. He finds that in itself, is sort of different, a massive hole leading to what appears to be an underground lake has formed inside it's trunk, armin jumps into it, and is greeted by none other than Hallucigenia-kun, Hallu-chan attaches itself to Armin's spine and Armin is once again able to access the path.
He goes to the path and finds Ymir, he then proceeds to ask her the big question. "Found Ymir, why is there so much salt in the ocean that no merchant could ever deplete it in a lifetime?" Ymir responds "Well, that's a simple question, it's coming from all the butthurt AoT Fans, who've read way too much fan therioes, and made their own crazy headcanons."
What if isayama read all of the theories, and decided to just give us all the big finger.

@@summerwind7075 That’s the only real thing that I can come up with tbh. @@wassimsoldat In my opinion one of the biggest problems was, that it was a bit rushed. This one chapter could have easily been split into 2-3 chapters. Some character moments and dialogues just felt a bit empty and, as I said, rushed. I also didn't like that we didn't really see much of the aftermath. Eren killed 80% of humanity, which should be a very big deal for the rest of earth's population. But it's not really addressed how the situation is now. We know that the there is still war and that the titans are gone but that's it. So it wouldn't surprise me at all if we're gonna see a much more detailed ending in the anime or if we even get a extra OVA or movie. Like what Evangelion did after the show was over. Even if the ending wasn't good for everyone, we still should appreciate Isayama's work and effort that he had put into this manga for nearly 12 years. And most of it was amazing. The ending of AoT was doomed to be disappointing for a lot of fans. That's why I still believe that the end of One Piece will be a big disappointment for a lot of fans. The longer your series goes on, the more characters and plot points you have and you need to find a good conclusion for everything. A short series automatically has a much easier job at that.

I actually agree. The one good thing about this ending is that it makes the degenerates you described upset. I would be disappointed, but I'm fine with it after all.
I really wouldnt have minded if Eren became a pure antagonist and was using the rumbling because he was actually fucking sick and tired of everyone looking at him and Eldians as devils. Coupled with the fact that Paradis was messing around and wasting time with other solutions to fix their relations with the entire world (literally no one would have stopped hating them) and how, again, the world depicted them as devils served as a catalyst to his mothers death- would progressively make Eren more pissed off and more desperate to the point where he truly believes is the right and only way. So why wouldn't he be a pure villain, no, they made him into a washed out forced anti hero, which overlooks the idea that horrible events can shape people into villains if given the pressure and time.
Would’ve loved if they couldn’t stop the rumbling and Eren just kills everyone outside of the walls, then he dies and we have a bittersweet ending
@@SippingVino I was hoping for an all out rumbling like that. But no. The only thing that got destroyed is the story itself.

I feel utterly betrayed. I’ve been writing for 3 days since finally binging the show in its entirety throughout the past month.
I’ve watched all the seasons multiple times. I rewatched everything including all of the OVAs EVERY time a new season came out. All of that energy and love just spat on. I cried painfully. The day after I watched it I couldn’t stop thinking about how they ruined it and how it can never be corrected. I still haven’t been able to stop thinking about it and I’ve been watching videos about the ending non-stop trying to find a way to accept it, but I can’t. I’ve been looking for closure, but I won’t get it. This will forever be an open wound.

@Kyle Pollydore SO THATS WHY SHE LOVES HIM, I WAS SO CONFUSED

I don't get why this part gets nitpicked so much. It's not too far off from what can happen in reality. Eren said she wanted someone to free her from her *agony* of love. She just couldn't help it.
*stockholm syndrome exits*
Eren failed to do what Lelouch succeeded at.
Unlike Lelouch and how he was able to distinguish himself from everyone becoming the devil and was all alone in death erasing everyone's crimes by showing that it was just him and no one else, Eren failed to distinguish himself from the Eldians and his friends meaning not only did he erase the defense mechanisms of his people that's still years behind the world, he left a world where Eldians are still hated because of him. Like that commander said this was the karma coming to bite the world's ass for hating Eldians. Not just Eren Yaeger, ELDIANS. With Lelouch everything was pinned on him and ONLY him and his empire. So when he died, the world moved on and they were able to move on because he didn't leave the world in shambles. How the hell does the world cope with an 80% loss of humanity? Thus the blame still falls on Eldia not just Eren.
Then what was the point of cutting the rumbling short? They're still hated after this whole ordeal. If anything cutting the rumbling shows the world that they're hate specifically they're fears were justified. Humans aren't as easy and that was showed in the 2 millenia that the world hated Eldians but this last chapter makes us want to believe that the world is okay and not just want to nuke the whole fucking Island. The trauma of the rumbling will not just go away just like that. 3 years and society is okay with letting Eldia still flourish especially with the Yaegerists? HELL NO! Eldia wouldn't even survive a year after the rumbling with the whole world after its ass for the trauma. If anything, it might've conviced me if the Yaegerist didn't flourish? But they did so now not only does the world hate them for the trauma they also have a regiment that represents an extremist mindset born out of an individual's misunderstanding that spiraled into the Yaegerists.
A common enemy of humanity is a common enemy of humanity if said enemy has no ties to humanity. With this logic Eren failed where Lelouch succeeded. Lelouch killed himself and dragged everything which made Britain meaning all the hate was towards him but Eren's death only dragged the titan's end. He thought that the whole world's hate would be focused on him but not with how fast everything was going. I mean even Lelouch waited for 3 months to let the world's hate focused on him. With Eren? The declaration of war literally only happend 2 to 3 days ago. Like if anything Willy Tybur was doing them a solid in letting the world know that instead filling hate fear jug towards Eldians, fill this jug of hate and fear towards Eren Yeager instead and only him distinguishing Eldia and Eren but Eren attacking immediately while the Eldians helping him made Willy Tybur's distinguishment of the two were null and void.
Eldia basically had nukes and now.. they're in the bottom of the food chain because they're just not well equipped to fight back against a world way more advanced than them.
In short, Lelouch used water as to where Eren used gasoline.
Very well put

@@AminMyGunPowder25 he still did the Rumbling for the reason he mentioned at the beginning of the chapter , you can't just ignore that and say he did it just because, as for why he said that the answer is in chapter 131, it is something everyone ignored when talking qbout Eren's motivations saying he only did the Rumbling because he wanted to save Paradis, but in chapter 131 Eren himself says he was disappointed with the outside world when he learned that there are people there , the image he had of the outside world and freedom from Armin's book was shattered so he wanted to flatten the earth , his goals were never completely selfless.
Don’t defend it’s pure trash
@@naboume466 well, yeah I know it wasn't completely selfish and I'm not ignoring that, I just clarified the comment above.
Spoiler alert to you:
Paradis got absolutely bombed the shit out of a while after Eren died. This can be seen in the ending credits of the final episode. So yeah you were right Eren screwed his own people by doing the rumbling and removing titans from the world.
All the amazing journey we went through just for SIMP Eren. My god
How is he a simp for loving someone?
mikasa and eren were secretly simping towards each other.
@@PLHouse Armin: You almost destroyed the world and killed more than a billion people
Eren: whatever
Armin: oh btw Mikasa might move o...
Eren: BITCH WHAT THE FUCK I WANT HER TO ONLY LOVE ME AND NEVER BE WITH ANYONE ELSE. THIS IS INSANE.
Crazy how some people think a man who knows he is gonna die, crying his heart out to his best friend for the last time about the person he loves, makes him an incel simp. He's 19. A child. He doesn't want to die and leave everyone behind, but he knows he doesn't deserve to live. So crying and showing human emotions makes someone an incel. He wasn't a god. He was a human being. It's not like he told Mikasa to never move on. He did the exact opposite. He specifically told her to move on and find someone else. MIKASA chose not to. He kept what he really felt to himself despite what he wanted. And there have been many clues that Eren liked Mikasa. It wasn't random. He was just a kid who didn't know how to love someone or show love yet. And when he finally learned how to, he had to push them away. Eren's character is so tragic, and it pains em seeing people simplify him to being a simp.
Thank you I found a comment with common sense so i don't have to scroll any further lmao
Eren killed 2 men who abducted mikasa when he was 9 years old
Nigga did you just say 19 year olds are similar to childs.
@@guerint_.3592 Yeah? But he's still human. he has human emotions.
@@themenace7539 I'm not wrong though. Scientifically he is a child. His brain isn't fully developed

I don’t understand how people are defending this ending. It’s absolutely atrocious. It’s an ending so bad it kinda ruins the series for me because it completely diminishes Erens motivations.
Oh their just definding it because their ship became canon
Exactly but those are the same Eremika shippers that caused that awful fanservice. All the proofs of Erehisu are here and you know what ? I wouldn’t have mind it not being real as long as it was coherent with the story. But here it’s not. It’s fucking not. Feels like a fever dream
I like how people are disappointed that Eren's true motivs weren't genocide actually. Wow.
@@soupe2000 WHAT ? Eren never WANTED to genocide people we understood his character because he wanted to break the cycle of hate. But now he doesn’t care. So it makes his genocide... « unjustified ». That’s the absolute contrary
@@elonaackerman4163 Not at all. His genocide made no sense before. Like Armin said in 125, destroying everyone else except the island would only lead to make the world smaller. People would've just slaughtered themselves inside Paradis, figthting for other reasons, like the powers of the 9 shifters. Conflict will always exist. Thinking a single second that erasing everyone else would lead to peace inside the island, it's being completely delusional.
However, Eren's motivs weren't that limited. Before the alliance stops him, he made sure Armin would become the hero, the "Helos" for the allied forces. Because not all the outside world was destroyed, conflict between Eldia and the wolrd isn't over and Paradis is condemned to be united against their enemy (stated in the end of the chapter). However, the rest of the world is now influenced by Armin and the warriors/scouts became ambassadors for all the rest of the world. Eren entrusted the fate of the Paradis on Armin, he's not gambling the fate of the island at all. If he led the rumbling to its end, he would have entrusted the fate of Paradis... to absolutely no one, the eldians would still have titans and they would still have killed each other.
This is for me, why Eren is that mature and complex. An amazing character in every regard and that last chapter absolutely gave him the best conclusion. His plan is both horrible, he's an absolute assh*le for triggering that genocide but his reasons in the end made it "a little bit" justified. A lot more than after chapter 131 where he just sounded like a psychopath, seeking freedom like if it was possible.
When eren said he didn't know why he did it i think he just meant what he said in 131 "when i learned humanity lived outside the walls i was disappointed...i wanted to wipe it all away" he probably didn't say it because he knew armin wouldn't relate to this scenario because it is something personal to him. That is my interpretation at least.
A really good point. He literally just said in the panel before "I wanted to turn the earth into a brand new land". His motives were sinful. Selfish. His agenda of Freedom was at the cost of innocent lives, and his only salvation was to do it for his friends.
He basically had a God hood trip with the morality of an emotional boy. Case and point, he literally cried he didn't want to die and wanted to be with Mikasa and the others. I think we all fell in love with our own headcanons and took our eye off the ball. Now everyone is just too upset their own fanfic didn't come true to actual read between the lines.
@@michaelgutierrez1826 yep. people are caught up in their own endings that they're not bothering to look even a little beneath the surface of Isayama's ending
@@ohski8574 the thing is its bad ending. It doesn't matter if its mentioned or if it was planned to end like this. its just poor quality ending its almost nonsense,it seems like isayama once had a dream and tried to write it... man i d enjoy it if it was a movie like 1 hour of weirdness and nonsense but reading manga through many years and waiting 6 years for season 2 ... it just made the situation even worse
@@ohski8574 do not forget that this ending is the result of Isayama changing the plan for the ending and changing the way he wanted to end the series in the first place
Even if the first option was very very depressive and upsetting
It was something that first came into his mind for the ending of his work
After tanking this whole ass series
I can tank that ending aswell but this ending is just Naruto Shippuden but Sasuke dies and Sakura accepts his death
I think isayama was forced to write this ending
I cannot accept he did this on purpose
I thought I heard somewhere that the editing team thought the og ending was too depressing/ upsetting, which is fine with me cause that would make more sense than Disney movie bird fixing Mikasas scarf, so he needed to rewrite it.
@@chinpallatea8007 oof ik but I hope isayama explains in an interview what the ending could have been.
Also reminder eren acting like a human in the final chapters was good to see but the way it was presented and how half-assed it was makes me feel Isayama didn't initially plan it or at least extend aot so that ending might make more sense
I think this is the ending that he planned. If you watch season 2 ending, it is exactly what happened in chapter 139. Also, it is consistent to Eren's goals. Get rid of Titans, save his friends and have them live long lives, and Armin as the savior of humanity. All of these were stated ftom the beginning.
@@chrystophir yes. it's just they weren't presented as well as I would like. The ymir situation doesn't make sense. The ending paints eren out to be a hypocrite. and we know the aot world isn't as forgiving like what we saw with armin but the historia thing makes up for it cus well. "war"

We wanted a dark ending man. We didn't want to see everyone living happily ever after when Mikasa and Eren are suffering alone

Speak for yourself, there’s no point having a dark ending just for the sake of it.
A happy ending would still work without destroying the series's themes. But not this way.
@@kzaverr8418 What do you propose then? There’s no form of a happy ending if the entire world was wiped out except the island, Erens friends would have still strived to kill him.
@@jakedickson2311 No one is saying they want a dark ending, Eren was already killed and so if isayama wanted to have a happy ending he still could since the main threat is done, the hallucigenia worm was killed offscreen, a very emotional moment where all of our favorite characters turned into titans is just instantly undone, and there’s still many unanswered questions, which isayama didn’t address at all, if he needed more chapters he should have done that but this ending just isn’t good its not terrible but its not good either. My original point was everyone saying conny and the others are gonna come back and me saying isayama isn’t that predictable because in the past he wasn’t, I assumed they would all have to be killed as titans or some shit and then marley would see the eldians aren’t that bad, The time skip of this chapter is good but all the other bs in the first half isn’t good at all.

So what happened?
You know, after thinking about it for a while, I just can't imagine that Isayama would give us such an ending on purpose. Everything leading up to chapter 138 was going smoothly, and only one chapter, the last chapter 139 was garbage.
Why did he wait till the very end to screw things over?
I then realized that he lives in Japan and if I remember correctly, AoT has always been getting a lot of hate from the Japanese government. Then given the fact that AoT is so influential, I think that the government got involved and his editors forced him to make a different ending.
Which is why he waited until the very last chapter to screw everything up so that we, the real fans would realized something was wrong!
Either that or he is crazy but he isn't crazy. This guy knows what he is doing, he went out of his way to foreshadow stuff in the anime before it even happened in the manga. Why would he change the story that was all about freedom to one about stupid love in one chapter??
