“Can’t move this by hand”…..*moves by hand
I did the same with my 2.4l toyota 2 years ago. Problem fixed.
All pro techs said that VVTi had to be replaced (only several grand with labor) lol!
Don't forget to properly reset the new tensioner by slightly rotating the crankshaft in the opposite direction. It will open the little hook on the tensioner and allow it to extend and self adjust.
My 2012 sounds some what. Not sure.
Two different issues bro
Great video! Helped me fix my wife's 2009 Corolla
You're welcome boss , I'm so happy to head that you fix your wife car using one of my video, thanks for your feedback 🙏
Your my hero ! Appreciate the “tensioner” part itself , needed to retract mine 👍
My f*%#ing hero I'm having this same problem in my 09 Matrix. The TSB on this advised replacing the whole timing system - an actual nightmare. Thanks a lot!
You're welcome boss ,
Thanks for your feedback
Thanks Nestor! was a big help, staright forward simple.
Thanks for your feedback
Thank you for this video,my 2005 corolla started making the rattling noise , now I know the problem. Mine the noise is there constant even when I have driven the car for long, the noise doesn't go away.
did this fix it?
Perfect automotive how to video no bullshit and straight to the point
Thanks Dylan thanks for your feedback
Got the same rattling on my 06 matrix, changed the spark plugs and it helped a little. Gonna do this next. Thanks!
Ok boss good luck
They didn't even show the sound of what it sounds like
Best video for the tensioner , excellente
Thanks bro for your feedback
Great video. My 2010 Camry SE just started making that rattle noise a week ago. 90k miles. Definitely will check the tensioner out. 👍
You're welcome , thanks for your feedback
Did you ever get it fix?
How does you car only have 90k miles on it?
That's what everyone always asks me. It has just got 100k last week. I work about 15 mins from home. I've driven it up the So Cal coast a few times but mostly to and from work. It's been great to me.
@@gregarizmendez5275 they’re great vehicles. ✌️ Camrys are also good.
Thanks for your help, I'm going to buy a 2007 Corolla with 250k on it and the chain tensioner needs changed. With your help, this will be a breeze.
You're welcome boss , thanks for your feedback
Gracias por sus instrucciones de mecánica. Se le agradece Amigo.

Thanks boss , thanks for your feedback
*You cannot press it with your hand* proceeds to press the new one with his hand 🤝😂😂😂

Ok thanks
Even a brand new one will move by hand. It's supposed to. The only time that the tension increases is when it is installed and the oil going into the tensioner increases the pressure/ tension on the chain.
Hey, do you think a long drive where the oil is burned below the stick would cause the rattle to start? My 09rav4 is rattling a bit now after a 5k drive. Oil is below the stick so the oil needs a change. Hope it fixes the sound at the same time.
Thanks for the video my friend.
You're welcome my friend , thanks for your feedback
Gracias
so glad I stumbled on you😆
Bien gracias , cobre Bien jijijiji
I like the jack!
Thanks boss
Great video! Thanks
You're welcome , thanks for your feedback
Good job bro, I have a 05 vibe pretty much as a matrix same engine . So when I start it's making the rattle sound like it's coming from pulleys I change power steering pump and new altenator and it makes same sound , so I guessing it's the timing chain is loose.
Yes sir I'm sure this will be your fix, thanks for your feedback
My car doing the same thing Toyota Venza 4 cylinder . I've checked everything under the hood and change heat shield, still have a loud rattling when first cranking up and when give it the gas
I just got my mom a 2009 scion xb and it's making crazy noise and it's has great power! But that noise! She gone love it! I was gone change the whole engine thank you so much!
Thanks for your feedback boss
Great video thanks

U welcome Joseph , thanks for your feedback
Thanks for video good job bro

Hearing an occasional rattle at idle.....not sure if it's a water pump going bad or this tensioner....it's on the same end of zthe engine as the belt drives. Scion xA first gen. Is there an easy way to tell which it is?
Great video, thanks! Did you replace gears also? I heard to always replace gears when you replace chain and tensioner..
Hey thanks ,, I only replace the tensioner and car still driving good no noise at all
So you didn't replace the chain with a new one? And the tensioner magically got the slack out of the chain between the two gears?
So that means there is no noise when a chain overlaps gear teeth to get tighter from the tensioner?
That would be great if that was the case!
Im definately facing the same problem on my 2SZ toyota vitz . I will definately sort it out
My O7’ Corolla is making a rattling noise but only when it is in gear (it’s a manual) do you think this is the problem?
If your chains been beating against something and loose shouldnt you replace the chain also?
Lifters pressurize with oil inside them.. hence hydraulic lifters.. I’m pretty sure you gotta prime em before hand in a cup filled with oil and u squeeze em until you cant then put the pin in em and install..
You rock man.
Thanks boss
great job bro
Thanks boss
For a 2011 Toyota Camry: Engine Timing Chain Tensioner 13540-0V031
Bro how about 2011 highlander 2.7l what is the procedure for it?thank u u making siple very imformative video👍
I believe they are the same engine bro , so same process, thanks for your feedback boss
Nice work 👍 I have 2008 Scion xB 2.4 L would this be the same procedure to replace on my car?
Yes thanks I'm sure they are the same
Excellent video! Do you know if the chain tensioner on a 2012 Honda Fit is similar to change out? Thanks for your info.
Thanks no on Honda they are inside
@@nestorautorepair OK, thanks for the info. Keep up your great presentations.
only if you had a video of how the noise sound. Now i'm stuck between water pump or timing chain tensioner smh thanks, great content
Take the main belt off and star the car and see if the noise still there
I'm between the vvti rattle or time chain lol I think it's the timing chain tho. It rattles on startup. Stops for a few seconds. Then randomly rattles. When I give it gas it rattles so I'ma check the timing chain when I get a chance
Wow ok we'll it can still be the here , open the valve cover and see if the chain is loos
@@nestorautorepair it was the timing chain 😄
Wow , thanks for sharing
Gracias bro
De nada
I would of changed the vvti , cam gear most definitely if I was to do all what you did and waterpump , then it's pretty much good 4 remains of it's life.
Will the chain always be loose between the camshaft gears or can it be loose below and still be the problem? I checked mine and it was tight up top.
Need to be tight all the way
Thanks for help
De nada you are welcome boss
@@nestorautorepair is 2013 have chain tensioner also
Hear rattling noise when idle and when give it gas like a lifter is that what the one you working on sounded like ?
A video before of the noise would have been nice. Thanks for this video though bro
👍
Hi, good video. Did this fault make the check engine light come on?
Thanks boss no light ON , but if you are getting code for timing then more likely your timing chain guides broke
Nestor, thanks for the video. My 2002 Rav4 2.0 liter is rattling and I suspect it's the chain but haven't looked to check the tension yet. It starts rattling about 30 seconds after cold engine starts running. i will check under valve cover tomorrow. Do you have any advice on that particular engine and part replacement if that is for sure the problem?
Thanks again.
Yes sir they are all the same , if you want you can take the serpentine belt off and start the car to make sure the noise is not outside
@@nestorautorepair oh yeah I definitely did that already and it wasn't. Btw what a bitch to get that belt on haha. Awesome man thanks.
Lol yes sir any time
Where did the retaining pin go?
Nice work!! And, it's the same for a Scion xd 2008 ??
Yes sir Same, thanks for the feedback
Hello Nestor. Firstly I would like to say thank you for the Video. It was very insightful and watching it makes me confident enough to attempt it. After watching the video I realized my car has a similar but slightly different issue. When I start the car up and the motor is cold it has a gentle idle.
The moment I rev it to set off, it has this very rough sound. Asif the oil has not worked its way through. It has an almost metal to metal sound. Once the motor reaches the correct temp. It goes away and idles nice and soft.
Nestor, what could the issue be. Its a 2010 Toyota Auris (Same engine as the Corolla)
Hey thanks for your feedback , I will recommend removing the valve cover and see if the chain has any play and we go from there , there can be many other staff that can make noise , or you can take the main belt off and start the car and see if the noise still there thee. You know for sure if the noise is internal or outside the engine .
OCV filter?
Yes
how did you get slack out of a chain with two sprockets that are suppose to move at the same time. is it still in time.
The tensoner will do the job
Hello thanks for the video. My toyota wish has a rattle when idling and low speeds which leaves on acceleration, could this be the issue as well? Thanks
Hi Yes it can be
I thought there was a chain guide at top
Nice video
You’re welcome boss no guide on top like Chevy
I have a 98 Camry makes the same noise what kind of timing chain does it carry is it the mettle or the robber belts thanks for that video..
Your 1998 Camry takes timing belt rubber
Definitely should have had some before and after sounds 😢
Noise on cool start
Hi Nestor. I replaced the timing chain tensioner and followed these instructions but I was told later that after installation and spinning the crank clockwise, you’re also supposed to spin it counter clockwise. I did not do this and heard a loud rattle at first start up but it went away. Is it necessary to spin the crank clockwise and then the other way for proper tension?
No that's not true bro , never go back
@@nestorautorepair thanks for that peace of mind!
You're welcome boss
Guessing you've already done this repair buddy but yes the Toyota manual specifically says to turn the crank anti clockwise until the hook on the tensioner unlocks. This should only take a very small amount of rotation and you'll hear the click. Then crank clockwise to extend the tensioner, you'll hear a series of clicks.
Yes
thank you. what kind of jack is that? do you have a link?
Thanks sure I will send you the link later today
What if the chain is tight but you have that noise?
I usually use Toyota OEM but in this case, that’s the part that failed. Have you had good luck with that brand of aftermarket ones?
Still running I just did a fuel pump on this car last week
What kind of jack is that ?
i have the Rattle noise I changed VVT-i filter, the old one is very good no carbon bullied but Rattle still there
Saludos!!!🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️
De nada brother suelte!! 💪
Good video! How to tell if the noise is from the chain or VVTi please? Thanks!
The chain tension and slack is the reason for the noise either way and the tensioner could be getting weak and the vvt makes it tremendously worse
Thanks gotta do this to my 2009 rav4 sport.. that rattling from the cold start is driving my wife crazy she thinks the motor is gonna break!
Do you need to have the valve covers/spark plugs removed to replace this? Or can we just replace it without disturbing these items? Do you crank the engine in neutral? Thanks!
You can do without remove all of that. Can reach from behind the engine & remove and install the new.
Wow that previous silicone job was scary!
Yes lol
Could be worse. They could have used spray foam.
@@roshi98 oh lord
Good job brother👍🏻
Thanks Hot
does this work on camry and scion ,
the tensioner is easy to compress ,you can do it easy with just 2 finger's, you do not need a press to do it.
Correct
Where is the tensioner installed? It looked to be outside the block.
Is this the fix for the chain rattle you can hear clearly when the engine is idling? I have that weird chain noise that sounds like something is loose inside the engine in a 2011 Rav4
Yes this was the fix
I have a 2012 Camry SE and I’m sure I have this problem. How much does it normally cost to replace this?
Not a lot under $100
Did you had power loss before you fixed it? Because my Yaris has a rattle and has power loss as well
Not really
I am having engine rattle at high sped in my Lexus ES330. The engine i s having a toming belt not chain, with 2 camchains (V6 engine), can you advise what should I change
Mmmmm sound like you need better oil and see if that fix it , is hard for me to tell you if I don't hear the noise
i have an intermittent rattle sort of noise (or the sound of shuffling poker cards) when i rev my engine in park and let off the gas pedal. I don't have any noise at startup but could this still be my timing chain or is it likely something else?
Did you ever figure this out, I’m in the same boat and we’ve already worked on the timing chain and it did not fix the noise, though it did seem to make it better
Where are you located?
My 2008 Toyota Corolla was making noise and now the motor is spinning fast no start. Can you tell me if this is what it could be ? I've asked folks when it was making the noise and of course no one knew what it was, I guess I'll take the valve cover off and go from there.. I wish I had found your channel before it broke down ! Thanks for sharing and fingers crossed and hope I can fix her ..! Oh new subscriber too
I will tell folks about your channel..
You're welcome boss thanks for your feedback ,, if I was you before removing the valve cover remove the spark plug and read the compression need to be 120 and up each sylinder
I noticed my Yaris 07 making rattle noise only when accelerating and only when cold for first 6-7 minutes. Later almost gone. Could this be tensioner?
Most likely yes
Does that noise happened in the cold weather or it happens all the time. I have similar noise on my 2009 Corolla but not sure it is starter or chain. The noise sound like, when car starting and I try t start again like starter gear hit flywheel gear but not 100% sure. So far, It seems like only happen in cold or car stayed over night. After car warm up, no more start up noise. Thanks for the video. Thanks in advance.👍
This noise was there all the time but stronger when you first start the car
@@nestorautorepair Thanks for the information.
You're welcome boss
I have the same year. It sounds like a diesel truck sometimes.
My car does this when I accelerate could it be this ?
Wassup Nestor I have a 2010 Camry 4 cly and I have the rattles upon cold start it’s sucks!
What’s the difference between the vvt cam gear rattle and the timing chain tensioner rattle?
Also if it would be the tensioner would I need to adjust the timing or double check the at any point?
Hello well for the vvt your will get a code and also the rattle will never go away ,, if there is no code for timing you don't need to adjust it just add the new tensoner
@@nestorautorepair but in the 2010 Model the tensioner is behind (inside) the timing cover?
Yes you are correct 2010 has it inside it will require to remove the side cover
@@nestorautorepair is it better just to go the hole timing chain kit since i would already be going thru the trouble?
Sure to be safe just do the new kit
Do I need to replace the valve cover gasket?
Yes is recomende
I did this to Scion XB it's easy. My Rav4 w/ 3GR-FE, V6 engine made this crazy chain slapping noise after oil changes last week. Now every morning cold start it making whizz noise like a bad belt. I'm afraid to start it in the morning.
Wow
I just put a new valve cover gasket in maybe 700 miles ago on my corolla do I still have to put a new one if I do this job ?
Not really if you did not add silicone you are good to use it again
Great tutorial.
What happens if we don't repair this can it break something?
Yes the engine will jump timing and that will be a done engine will need a new one, thanks for your feedback Dicofol
exactly as he says. this problem not repaired = wrecked engine, no salvation.
@@nestorautorepair not really bro. It will bend valves. Papi.
Ok papi
@@vindieu i have not found one person yet in any forum or youtube comments that said it wrecked their car. Seen some with over 200k miles and still makes noise on cold start n never caused issue
can I replace the tensioner without removing the valve cover?
Yes you can
I received a 2009 1.8 Corolla to work on and the thing throws p0300, p0301 codes and other misfire codes P0302, etc.
I have changed the oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, the battery, I have tested the injectors, i have tested the Ignition coils, i have cleaned the throttle body and i have cleaned the mass airflow sensor. The car stalls out a lot and shakes. It also goes into limp mode if it shakes too hard. My cousin said it sounded like a rod knock, but i can't hear it that well. I do hear noise over by the timing chain, so im going to follow your guidelines and see if my chain is loose. Thanks for all of the info. I'll let you know if it solves my issue.
Yes sir thanks for your feedback , also make sure you do throated relearn
How do you perform throttle re learn on these? Do you have a video?
On Corolla you don't need to , only Camry needs it
My chain makes a noise on my manual 2003 Viti RAV4 it comes and goes but it’s revving or stalling at lights etc... is that tensioner or chain ?
By the way love your no fuss way of getting to the point
Start with the tensioner first
@@nestorautorepair thank you so much!
