Honestly- if you are a Sony shooter, a PMR or Mark Galer review should be the first video you look for.
The question I had in my head as soon as the video started was (besides the obvious macro work) what does this do for an event/sports photog? Patrick made some good points with that in mind.
I already invested in the 70-200gm ii and really would not have an spot for this in my kit, but I could see how it would be a good addition in other’s.
Oh, and go ahead and keep speaking your lens desires into existence please! 😊 that 135 1.8 lens would be KILLER.
I’m patiently awaiting the release of the 300 2.8 for sure.

Thanks for focussing on what is truly important to photography. Love this lens. This last two years has been amazing from Sony with several really important lenses to back up the best sensors and autofocus in the business. The ability to focus quickly and closely is so important. Paired with the A1 as you say - it’s blissfully fast and accurate. Thanks for sharing genuinely practical information and insights. Appreciate the support and feedback.

Patrick - Thanks for a most informative review of the new Sony F/4: 70-200 mm macro lens. I'll be buying one. I've followed you for several years now and you haven't steered me wrong. Based on your reviews I bought the A1 and several other Sony G and GM lenses. I couldn't be more pleased with what I've learned from you. In this past year I sold all excellent/expensive Canon equipment and replaced my Canons with Sony. I'm a retired agricultural & industrial photographer; grew up in the film era with the best Nikon and Hasselblad cameras and lenses. So pleased for your introduction to Sony. Thanks. Keep up the excellent reviews. I'll be watching and buying more Sony cameras and lenses.

Three reasons I can think for getting the GMii F2.8 are for poor light, greater Bokeh and the internal zoom. Four reason for the F4 Gii are lighter, smaller, cheaper and its macro capabilities. I have the GMii and find it difficult to justify getting this new lens, although it is tempting. Most of my photography is using tele-focal lenses.

Thank you for the video. Always enjoy your assessment. When this came out I already owned the 70-200/2.8 GM II that I use on full size Sony full frame bodies like the A1, A7RV, and A7IV. I’ve now added two of the new compact C bodies, A7CII & A7RV, to my travel kit and interested in small, lighter lenses like this f/4 70-200mm. Used to own the original version when it first came out. So how do you think this pairs with these new smaller bodies? Will it balance well? Is it a good fit? I have a 1.4X TC, is the 2.0X maintain its sharpness? Lots of question for sure but you are the man to talk to for sure. Please share your thoughts please. Take care.

Steven, I love the new 70-200 f/4G and am using it much more often than the 70-200GMII. As I tend to like the 135GM more for sports, I'm actually considering selling my GMII lens as the f/4G lens is so dang good. I also love it for travel work as I can shoot macro anytime I want without needing another lens. I am still using the 20-70G with the 70-200G f/4 Macro for general work but I change to the 16-35G PZ lens for doing landscape. There is no lighter weight option that I know of that yields such excellent results!

I shoot mostly nature, but 24mm would be my go to for most landscapes. Then I like to do birds, for which the 200mm is generally way too short. To me, the 24-105mm focal length is a much better walking around lens. But that's me, how do you shoot? Go back and look at your favorite shots and see what focal length you shoot at most often. If most of your photos are shot at 105 and you would have liked to have had more reach, then maybe this is your lens. Another thought is that you can always crop a photo in post, but you can't go wider. It would be great for sports though.
