Video by Sean Riley and Brady Haran
From a VERY wise man. He's got it nailed.
I love the professor! Such dry humor.
That Smack a Mac has a whole 90 nanosecond warranty, and they'd give you two back if you could return it in that window. Such a nice company
A Computer that just works... haven't found one yet.
My university (or at least the computer science department) used Linux almost exclusively, and I would have thought that it was even more attractive to universities now.
i like this guy
He looks like science
He IS science. ;)
That hair is awesome!
Any day i see a new video with Martyn in it is a sign that it's going to be a good day!
Martyn is one of the UK's fare Living National Treasures and its interesting he hear how he's adopted computers into his work
This guy is from periodic videos
I always reveled in the fact that we used original Macs as doorstops in the comptech lab at my high school.
I have used both Windows systems and Macs for decades. I have also managed small numbers of both professionally. My current primary system runs Windows 7 but I also still have a couple of Macs in use at home. Overall Macs have caused me less frustration over time. There have been times I have wanted to hit both types of systems.
Fun NeXT gag in the manual (0:41). I wonder if they dyed it black before sending it along.
Omg, I live Prof Martyn. Perodic Videos!
I have one in New Zealand that my Dad gave me when he came back from a conference in 80s.
A pet peeve of mine: PC means "personal computer." They're _both_ PCs. I tend to differentiate based on operating system, which is much more relevant.
he has a cool tie
I love this man, what a gentleman.
I'm a bit bummed there isn't even a mention of Linux (and slim to none in comments). My school uses Linux for most computers (Redhat Enterprise). The exceptions in our department are the few computers used for some extremely specific softwares in our labs.
Personally I find Linux to be really, really convenient. Especially the virtual desktops that is a common thing in many distros. It bothers me so much that I only have one desktop to stack things on in Windows, rather than having several ones to spread your stuff over. I literally use 6-7 desktops when doing report writing, one for data analysis, one for plotting, one for LaTeX, one or two for browser windows, a few for pdf files... Once you experience it you don't want to go back.
I'm writing this on my MacBook Pro - but it's running Windows 8.1 right now. It can be a Mac again in a minute (or so). I can easily move files back and forth from the two Operation Systems. If you get a Mac you can almost certainly run it under Windows when that seems appropriate (you will have to by the Windows OS key) - and still use Mac OS when you wish. You would need to create a Hackintosh to get Mac OS on a non-Mac. On top of the rather difficult engineering, building a Hackintosh is strongly discouraged by Apple.
I use a mac for school and a pc at home. I prefer the power and affordability of pc's, but I respect the elegance/reputation of macs.
At one point I had 5 Windows PCs and no Macs. I had to do a lot of work and they all had various tasks to accomplish. Then I was introduced to Macs at work. Over the years. I reduced the Windows PCs to 1 and I have multiple Macs.
For me, Macs work and they integrate with portable devices and I’m not spending time on pre-emptive housekeeping.
My Windows 10 PC crashes between 6 and 8 times per day - not a lie - something it did once a month running Windows 7 and I still have to run housekeeping to keep it ticking over.
Completely agree with the prof!!
I thought this would be a video about dropping a Mac a few feet to fix it which was supposedly in the instruction manual for an old Mac.
Nah if Professor Martyn wanted to smack his mac, he'd use fulminated mercury.
lol professor goes wild :D
I love his hair
The Professor is here!
Man, I want one of those.
this is pure genius
I got only one question:
Where can i buy the smack-a-mac?? I sooo want one. xD
this looks like bmo
I'm wondering, have you tried hooking your computer up to a Vandergraaf generator?
I remember having one of those Macintosh...
Someone needs to make one based on the current iMac, I can use one next time I have to do "tech support" for my mom's Mac Mini.
I want one!
PC used to rocks mac back in those days. Now both PC and Android devices rocks mac for good :)
Bahaha, this is adorable! Couldn't stop giggling watching him beat up that plushy.
Haha who hasn't wanted a smack a computer toy
... Gotta love the hair, proper scientist
Fantastic!
Just as a side note, PC and Mac is the same, BUT it is the Operating System that is different. PC stands for Personal Computer, both Windows and Mac OS is made for Personal / Professional work, so it is kind of wrong calling it PC (Windows) and Mac (Mac OS)
Doc Poliakoff jumped onto another channel! :D
Now we need some Dr. P. excuses for Numberphile or Big Sky or some such!
Oh, are Smack-a-Macs still on sale? Please let the answer be "yes"...
LOL "computer users everywhere began to exhibit ... decreased sex drive"
From a programmer's perspective, Linux is by far the best.
As a college programmer myself, I agree. But then I go back to windows for everything else.
That's probably the only problem I can see with it; not all software is compatible with it. Of course, there's a lot of free and open source equivalents of many programs, but when you need a specific program, then a windows partition or VM is useful.
Please do a video on ECC RAM vs. non-EEC RAM, and DDR RAM vs. GDDR RAM
this needs a remake!
I'd have one just because it's cute and retro. It's based on an SE/30.
BMO!
A 90 nanosecond warranty! That's too much.
A pointless debate, is what it is; both have their strengths and weaknesses
you are completely right all this debate of mac vs pc is pointless for example I use a mac becouse I work with audio and mac is better of audio stuff but pc are grat too they are unexpensive and they cover diffent needs for everyone
but the most pointless thing is that people who say "ahhhggg pc are better" or "argghhhhh macs are better" won't change anything.
Depends on what you want, I suppose. Strictly speaking you can get better hardware on a Windows computer than a mac for cheaper, but if the OS makes it worth it for you, then Mac it is I guess. I still hate the iPhone cause of the app store and the limitation where you can't download stuff unless it's from the app store. I used to have a similar problem with mac (macs were never as bad as the iPhone, of course.) as compared to Windows, but now that Windows 8 has reared its ugly head that argument is defunct. I just hope Linux catches on with more developers.
Chickenfrend
you are right I cud get cheaper and better hardwear on pc but for me the os really makes the difference becouse I use logic poro x wich is one of the most poular programs to make music and that is only avaible on mac , but I think that what you are sayng with the limitations of the appstore is kinda wierd becouse there is not really that much you can gaet there for games you are much better of downloading seam and for other softwear you can simply buy or download it from the web at least for my needs , and I really have a lot of hope for linux I think that it's 10 times better then windows (without the consideration of the fact that there are not so many programs for linux but they are absolutely gaining inpopularity and I think that this is rally something grat)

My problems with the app store are more philosophical than practical. I don't like that if you want to develop for iOS, you have to get your program on the app store, which means you have to give apple a large cut of the profit. I realize at the moment this isn't really a problem for anyone who isn't a developer, but in the future as more of computing becomes focused on mobile and tablets, and as the app store moves to places like personal computers, users might find themselves more restricted. This is the main reason I'm not a fan of Windows 8. On the "metro" interface, you can only download things from the windows store. Of course, on the desktop side this isn't the case, but since windows is really pushing its metro interface I'm worried Windows 9 or 10 will be even more restricted. Mac is heading in this direction too, as they add the app store to their computers and the ability to disable downloads from other places. Android I like better than iOS, as they still have the option to download stuff from outside the store. It's still not enabled by default as it should be, though.
Generally, I'm suspicious of more computer-literate people who choose their applications because of their OS rather than their OS because of the applications they actually want to run. The pointlessness of OS holy wars is self-evident to me; I'm a veteran of the long, grinding campaign of the Amiga-vs-the-world OS holy war, and I simply don't have the enthusiasm to enter another one.
For now (and since 1996), I've used Windows because those are the apps I've wanted. If for whatever reason the tide turned and the apps I wanted forced me to take up a Mac (or some future alternative), I would do so without much regret.
The professor should have it's own action figure. I'd buy it.
That is so cool! I definitely need one of those things to smack around hehe
I need one
Is there a Smack a ... for Win8 (on PC) users ? Some of the features are driving me up the wall.
Macintosh is a very nice OS. It's simple and works very fluently, even after years of intensive use. But they are too expensive and, honestly, they don't worth it. It's not very confortable to be pushed to buy new versions of Macintosh, as lot of new apps won't work. My advice? PC with the Linux distribution you best like: it's also UNIX and it just works nicely.
Am I the only one who really wants a Smack-a-Mac now?
What is the soul of chemistry doing in computerphile lol :P
Early Macs were fine. Modern apple computers are just more expensive, less compatible computers.
Actually on pc you can instead double click the left up side of a window to close it.
Mac vs PC is a stupid debate, if it works for you then it's a good computer
Fee and open source software is the way forward, with Unity (which have been said to be the most intuitive of any desktop interfaces*) as your interface and Ubuntu running, you can't really go wrong. The one of the best thing is you don't have to pay.

I think you find that windows now will be just free updates from now on :)
***** I don't get what you mean.
Well I don't see them making a new Windows like they have before because of the new system and surface pro tablets, and see them just making updates so no one is left be hide on there tablets :P
a smack-a-mac should come with every new mac OS. I have has so much trouble with the latest systems.
I wonder how well the Professor would handle Linux? I've moved my old laptop to Lubuntu in anticipation of Microsoft discontinuing support for Windows XP, and it doesn't really seem that different to me.
They need a puncture and flame resistant version.
Oh damn. I gotta get one of those plushies. (Ok wow these go for quite a bit now)
As an Apple hater I'd love one of these.
Mac vs. PC. My offical stance: "Use what works for YOU!"
I'm a power user and a hardware/network admin who likes to customize my deployments heavily. I'm a PC guy, and I've never had an issue with PCs personally that I couldn't easily fix.
I recognize that a lot of people, even at my workplace where PC is prevailant, like Mac for it's functional simplicity, and I fully endorse that, if that is what the end user wants.
BTW, Mac users, don't preech that Mac is idiot-proof, you just accuse yourself as being an idiot. Just say that you like the pretty colors, or something :/
Just remember that this chap has access to very strong chemicals, so any computer problems can just dissolve away - with sufficient acid
someone should introduce Prof. Polyakoff to linux.
This guy looks like ....... SCIENCE!
Just for curiosity sake I looked up the address on the back of the Smack-a-Mac!...fully expecting to see some huge, vast industrial wasteland. Ummm...not quite. Just a modest little suburban house in the middle of San Diego.
I'm pretty sure that's BMO from Adventure Time
I want smack a windows 8
I wonder what Brady would have done if the professor had said that Macs are crap and he's glad he doesn't have to use one. I'm guessing he would have found a different professor. :)
Professor Martyn looks like an older version of Dan (NerdCubed)
Where would one get a Smack a Mac now?
did any1 notice that they offer a 90 nanosecond warrenty in the user manual...
Hell yeah PC is the only way to go, I need a right click button!
pauze at 44; the smack a mack has a 90 nanosecond warranty
Macs are designed for audiovisual applications, which is fine, but makes them ill-suited to science and engineering applications. We have a mix of PCs and Macs at our university; the Macs - despite costing 6 or more times as much as the PCs - take more than ten times as long to solve complex fluid mechanics, kinematics, or thermodynamic simulations.
That's what happens when you use a product designed for the common person for a job that you would normally use a professional tool to perform.
It's like using a Black & Decker drill to assemble the Space Station, you're going to experience a lot of difficulty because it's not the right tool for the job.
yeah me and the geology club at the U of A got our geoanalysis and geophysical simulation programs on macs and they would crash a lot or just simulate the watching of grass growth, or paint solidification.
The problem is, we got stuck with the macs because the ones doing the purchasing were the stereotypical "why don't you just get a mac" type.
*****
I'd like to see you edit a film on a Windows laptop though.
id like to see you type up an essay with a mac without mic office. Both sides have their + and -
A Mac is a personal computer (PC).
Something I've noticed in my time at school/college etc, the art department always uses Macs. Anybody know why that is?
That hair was caused back in the dark days of using a Mac
use LaTeX in Lyx
Here Here
The professor is seriously cute sometimes :3
MAC == PC
Windows == PC
MAC != Windows
Therefore both Windows and mac extend PC
I love watching his inability to get angry.
Almost every teacher at my school uses a Mac, if I ask them why they're saying they just find it much easier but they don't want a fight. Maybe Mac users don't like debating and just laugh at every PC user for not knowing how cool Macs are
PS: I've got a Mac
PSS: I don't mind Windows, but I'll stay with my Mac
Mac OS 9 or MS-DOS. Have a pick, Windows Fanboys and see if you REALLY would use a PC over a Mac
1:13 .. shit just got real.. real fast...
The problem with Macs and PCs is that PC stands for Personal Computer and not Microsoft Windows Computer, so Macs _are_ PCs. I hate the phrase "Mac vs PC", it's like saying "Orange vs Fruit".
Apple vs Windows* someone might get mad at you, and you could of eat the apple
it looks like BMO's grandfather
unless you are young! priceless
Looks like BMO from Adventure time. :P
they should make smack-a-hp-desktop-pc. theyr so slow
PC all the way.
Sorry Professor, but your term "PC" is the abbreviation for Personal Computer. Which is any computer you own or use, weather it is a mac or windows or Linux. it's your Personal Computer. So when you say "PC" do you mean Microsoft windows or do you use another OS?
Quote "The University decided that PCs were better."
The University was, and still is correct.
