“Just because I can doesn’t mean I have to.” That is SOOO good! Very proud of you, Maya! I stepped out of the classroom at the end of last school after only two years. It was so hard because of how quickly my identity got wrapped up into my title as “teacher,” but I don’t regret the decision at all. It’s given me so much margin to pursue other passions and really love and support others in a way that wasn’t possible for me while in the classroom. So excited for you and praying for you as you continue this next chapter!

I made the same decision about a year ago. I quit my teaching job after 10 years. Just like you, when I started teaching I thought I was going to be a teacher until it was time to retire. It was a hard and scary decision, but now, a year later, I can say it was totally worth it. Teaching is a really physically and mentally tiring job.
I'm sure you'll do great in this new stage of your life! 💜 Get that rest you deserve and keep on rocking!

Unfortunately, the direction of the education system has caused a lot of great teachers to seek other options. I majored in education but changed majors with a year left when I saw the direction things were going and my heart told me it wasn’t right for me. Love kids and have been blessed to work with them in other areas, but I get it. I’m happy for you Maya! Follow your heart and God’s direction for you! Looking forward to where it leads you! 😃

And I felt like I was missing out because all of my friends recently started school. But what you said about just because you can doesn’t mean you should really resonated with me. Hi Maya! I’m a first year teacher and the amount of overwhelm-liness I’ve felt because of the all the info needed to be learned besides classroom management, curriculum, connecting with students and parents, etcetera is a lot! I’m also a mom of 4 and 1 year old and have been dealing with guiñt and anxiety every morning that I leave to work and then coming home to unfinished work for the day. It makes me wonder if teaching is something that I still want to do. I entered teaching because I loved it and now I’m just a mix of emotions. Anyway, Sunday scaries are real! Thank you for this video, God bless!

As the channel and community evolved away from teaching content, it never felt as though there was anything missing. You ARE teaching all of us that decisions like this are not easy and will take time, but ultimately we all need to do what is right for us, and I thank you for being an authentic example of that.

My mom is a teacher. She is the mother of three and also has chronic migraines and fibromyalgia. I went to the same school she taught at for years and saw first hand of difficult her job is. Teachers absolutely have a ridiculously hard job, for which they are compensated very little, and given little recognition. Teachers shape our lives and change the course of our lives in so many ways. But it is so difficult for them. Maya your masters degree was not "for nothing". You have touched and altered the paths of so many young lives. Even if that's all the students you ever teach, it is still such an incredible impact. Trust in God's plan. Thank you for being such an inspiration

I've been teaching for 15 years. The last 3-4 years have been challenging. It took such an emotional/mental toll. The stress began to manifest in physical illnesses. At one point I was crying everyday because I felt so hopeless. Midway of the last school year, I requested a leave of absence for the 2022-23 school year. Luckily it was granted. I need the rest! Unfortunately, all of my benefits and income are cut off at then end of August. I just hope that I can pay my bills for the next 12 months, but it is worth the mental/emotional rest I will have. Best of luck to you!!

I always thought this would be what I would do for my whole life but I am so excited about all the possibilities that walking away has opened up for me. Teaching is so often seen as something you commit to as a career for life but there are so many different things I am interested in and passionate about and I found teaching so all encompassing (the Sunday scaries are real!!). I love the mental space that leaving teaching has already opened up for me. Thanks for sharing your story!

Maya, thank you so much for sharing. I left the classroom this January during my very first year as a full-time first year teacher, and like you, it was so scary because I had been dreaming about that job since I was a little girl. I went back to the classroom to teach summer school this summer and it was great, but I’m so unsure of what to do. Even thinking of returning to the teacher lifestyle fills me with fear, anxiety, and exhaustion.. but I also know there’s so much I love about the job. I felt you so much when you said it just felt like you were never doing enough… 🥺 Truly believe there is so much courage needed to both stay and leave the classroom, and I am so so proud of you. Proud of you for choosing rest and for choosing yourself 💛

Maya!!! thank u for articulating this so well. it made me teary-eyed. I've found comfort in your videos because we have so much in common. Working out, being a teacher, sharing similar faith and beliefs etc. I've been teaching for almost 4years now and just hearing a fellow teacher talk about the exhaustion and how we always want to give our students the best is so relatable. there were so many times i felt like my students didn't deserve me and they deserved a much better teacher and i'm still in the process of figuring this out i guess. but i love them so much its crazy. Teaching really humbles me and teaches me so much about myself too. Really proud of your decision👏 I quit my permanent day job for taking care of my family, and i know how it feels to quit a job. But definitely it is worth to put your time on something that gives you peace.

Maya, I started watching your videos for the motivation of waking up early and making daily changes in my life. When watching your videos, seeing you wake up super early, work out, go to work, come home and work on your youtube channel I always admired and still do admire how incredibly hard you work. I remember wondering how you managed going to school yourself and also working several part time jobs on the side. I'm so so happy for you that you're at a point in your life where you can make the decision to let go of something, in order to move towards other goals and aspirations ❤ Also congratulations on getting married!! ❤❤❤

Hi Maya, I can relate 100% to this video. I also left teaching after 6 years. I loved being in the classroom but the amount of hours after school and on weekends I would put was overwhelming and I was constantly exhausted. I hesitated leaving the profession for a while because I felt like I wasted time doing my education degree but it was a good decision. It's scary for sure but it will be amazing :). I am now a dietitian which is crazy when you mentioned it in the video. Keep going with the amazing videos. xox

Maya, thank you for sharing and doing what's best for you. Life is a journey and as you said just because you can doesn't do something, doesn't mean you should. I look forward to these chapters in your life as a wife and full-time UA-camr. 🙏

Just quit after 6 years of teaching myself, the unknown is scary, but you definitely need the rest and time to find the clarity your looking for. Wishing you the best on this next adventure and just know that there is something better in store ❤️

Maya, thank you for all of your hard work throughout the years. I believe that God gives us seasons of different things to test us physically and spiritually. There’s a lot that’s going on new in your life and a break isn’t bad. You definitely deserve a break. I pray for clearance and just a season of rest during this time. Keep up the great work.

I wish you all the best on your new journey. Believe it or not, the skills that you acquired as a teacher will be strengths with many future jobs. Thank you for being a blessing for many students. Thank you for sharing the letter that I wrote to you several years ago. I am now in my 30th year of teaching and it is about finding and protecting one's peace. I am sending you a hug. Take care and thank you for your video presentation.

Im doing my second and i hope my last year of teaching, even if actually i enjoy doing it and kids are amazing, collegues are nice, parents aware, i lost my energy and free time. For this year it will be ok, i already took a break last year, i became a teacher this september again. I stopped because health issues, the rest made me felt alive again, so i can attack this new scolar year with energy. I miss reading. I miss listening to rock and metal music, not boring baby songs to check my pupil level fitting. I miss being up after nine without being completely exhausted. I miss going to grocery store just for sugar or extra drink and not only once per week for essential. I miss spending time with people i love the most without thinking counting six points on ladybug wings, how to keep the floor clain during painting lesson, should i buy new books linked to our season theme.. I miss having my job uniform only at work and not from five am until seven pm, mon day to sunday.

Hey Maya, I completely understand. I was a special education teacher for four years. When COVID hit, it changed how I felt, and I was so unhappy. Last year I decided to leave teaching ( after getting my master's as well) but leaving was the best for my mental health, and I found a job that I love. Good luck!!
