  • Normalising Acne is a documentary that follows my skin journey. Acne is visible but more often than not, it's a hidden struggle that isn't openly spoken about. I wanted to create something that was raw, and unfiltered to try and expose the ongoing fight against "bad skin".
I've struggled with acne since I was 13, and I thought that period of time was over until 2017 when it came back worse than ever.
I'm 21 now and I no longer wanted to suffer in silence. So in August 2018, I decided to start recording my skin, thoughts, and emotions to document my journey with the hope that it can help others feel less alone.
    #Normalisingacne
Please go ahead and use the hashtag to share your own story. I have received so much love since posting the trailer; more than I could of ever imagined. Words cannot explain how accepted and loved I felt and it would be incredibly appreciated if that love can be shared. ❤️

OMG this is Literally the case for me now , I have been thinking of searching for acne experiences and stuff so that I can have more confidence and patience with my acne treatment bc I'm breaking down crying so often which is something I didn't used to do before I think I was ignoring the fact that my skin is damaged , but recently.... Acne is all what I think about!! And I hate that! I'm not hating myself bc I love myself and every part of my body but I'm always insecure bc of ppl's eyes on me it's really annoying and makes me uncomfortable, smtimes I feel so confident about my face and my acne even if it's awful but when I meet some friends they directly destroy that confidence with on qs "OMG why are your skin like that? Are you receiving any treatment for this acne? You're having a sever acne .... And that bla bla bla which brings me down to earth.... Anyways this is getting longer but nowadays bc of Covid-19 we have to put on masks which makes me more secure to go out or to go to school but since the corona situation here is getting much better everyone is putting off their masks but me and they always ask me for the reason but I can't even answer ... I'm trying to take off my mask from now on especially that I started liking one boy and I want him to see me without a mask at least once to remember my face 😂😂 I honestly think I'm beautiful and pretty without mask but I'm not confident yet and afraid of ppl's reaction 🥺 I hope your acne situation got better from the time you wrote this comment bc I exactly know how it feels.... And today I want to the dermatologist and he told me that I'm getting better and I wish so 🙏

I could say its only scars that its really hard to deal with too! I actually relate to you! I also started liking a boy who likes me too ! And I really try to just be myself even if I still do have acne! This time I dont want my skin from stopping me to do things I like and I love! Sending love to you!!! We will all heal! 😘

This video was really eye opening, I have never had acne or really had any problems with my skin, however it was so interesting and inspiring to watch your journey with acne and how well you have dealt with it. I truly believe that you are such a brave and strong person, to share your story with so many people. I hope others, like myself, will also feel more educated and knowledgable of acne and other skin conditions that can affect people’s day to day life as much as this has yours. Beautiful video Cerys. ❤️

I've been having acne at the age of 12 and now I'm 20, still have it. It's a never ending history. Depression, anxiety, low self esteem, not willing to go out and keeping a distance with the people I love just because of that thing is overwhelming. I've been feeling down since the beginning of this year but lately I've been praying to God to just help me being positive in life and to lead it without caring about the words of others. Watching this video has really boosted my confidence and I cried alongside with you during the last part. It feels like I'm being examined by people and there is always that one person making comments about your skin. But who cares? It is my skin and I know what is best for it.
I now know that I'm not alone in this journey and thank you for making this video and being raw in it. I love you for that💕
I wish all people who are in this phase to just be yourself- you know your WORTH and you are unique and beautiful in all ways.
ACNE IS TEMPORARY. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER❤

Oh Cerys I’ve just sat down and watched this fantastic documentary that you have filmed and my face is soaking wet from crying.
I can relate to you so much, I started getting Acne when I was in my 20’s, I’m now in my 40’s and still get it very slightly around my chin. I’ve spent my whole life walking with my head down, never making eye contact and being the quiet one so I didn’t have to face people. I’ve let it ruin my career and take over my life.
Words cannot express how amazing I think you are for documenting and being so open about this.
You look fantastic and I love how confident you are about going outside without make up on, I’ve let make up rule my life and will spend hours trying to cover up, no more now I’m going to try and be brave, this was really like watching a BBC 3 documentary.
Please carry on and make more, you are a huge inspiration, you wanted to help at least one person? I think I can safely say you will help a lot more then that xx

Thank you so much for your amazing words Helen and wow, comparing it to a BBC documentary, what a compliment! - I'm so sorry acne has got you down for so long but I'm so honoured to be even the tiniest of inspiration for you to be confident in your own skin. I hope you can carry on living your life doing what makes you happy; you're such a kind soul and I'm so grateful to have you supporting! Thank you. ❤️

I completely agree with you. You have said everything I wanted to say to Cerys. It could have been me that you were talking about when you related your experience with acne. It blighted my life, career, personal life and my mental health that was already in a bad way. It must be so much more difficult now for the' instagram' generation and the emphasis on 'perfect' looks. Doctors still seem to be giving similar advice to that given in the 70s: antibiotics and birth control pills. I was on antibiotics and the pill for years. They didnt make the slightest difference to my acne, in fact, with hindsight, they made it far worse.

Thank you for making this video. I really wish that I had your confidence. I started breaking out around age 26. I tried changing my diet, had my hormones checked, went on antibiotics, used proactive and every over the counter acne product available, used Tretinoin cream, benzoyl peroxide, Clinamycin, salicylic acid, birth control, home remedies, different vitamins and supplements, Spironolactone, chemical peels, microdermabrasion. I mean you name it and I’ve tried it. This went on for almost 6 years until finally I asked about going on Accutane. I am in my 6th month now and I am finally completely clear. I had acne not just on my face but on my neck, chest, back and shoulders. It is all gone now. I am so happy! I wish that I would have asked to go on it a long time ago. I just hope that it will not come back but if it does, I will do another round. My sister is about to go on it after seeing how well it has worked for me.

One thing that absolutely helped me was antibiotics. I know it was temporary cure when I was fighting bacteria. But I felt so good to have clear skin again. However DO NOT USE ANTIBIOTICS JUST FOR ACNE. It's not worth it because you would get imune from them and sickness would not be cured...

I have just watched this video after seeing you talking about it on Instagram and I'm blown away! You're honesty, you're self confidence, you're positivity and you're beauty is not only amazing but shows you as a proper inspiration! I was the year above you in school in John bright (not sure if you remember me) and I use to see you around and think how beautiful you are! I think by you doing this video and showing your journey you will help so many people! You have even given me confidence and made me think " yeah I really shouldn't care what people think"
It's so easy for people and girls to hide their skin and imperfections and make people see something that's not a true portrayal of who they are. But you have shown what it's like to be normal, what it like to have imperfections and you make imperfections.... PERFECT!
You're a beautiful girl inside and out and I love what you stand for! You're beauty is more then skin deep and it really shows! I wish you luck and all the best for the future! Thanks for doing this video! X

I hope your skin cleared up by now. No one deserves acne. Some have none and some have it mildly and some receive it big time. I can really emphasise with you. I am in my 60s and from the age of 14 til my mid 20s (and periods after that) I had severe acne. I finally went on Roaccutane in my 30s which sorted it out but I have been left with some scarring. One consolation I have is that everyone says I look far younger than my age with hardly any lines or wrinkles but that doesnt make up for those years when acne blighted my life. You are so brave making this video. We are so lucky to have the internet, especially UA-cam today. Other acne sufferers can see that they are not suffering alone. I really wish I had had this resource in my younger years. It would have made a massive difference to me. Thank you.

I went on roaccutane twice which cleared it up and then it slowly came back. The thing that I started to use about 10 years ago was benzoyl peroxide 10%. It is so brave of you to share your stories with others who are also struggling. You are beautiful with or without your skin issues. Skin positivity and skin confidence need to be talked as much as body confidence. People talk about body positivity, cellulite, stretch marks, stuff like that on their bodies yet they don't talk about skin on our face. Our conversation should be more of like normalising acne

Had someone once come up to me in a supermarket and say ‘you should eat more healthy food it would help with that acne!’ And she had a cart full of junk food and I had a basket of fruit and veg! Cerys, I'm not sure you'll read this but this video was very inspiring and relatable. I also suffer from hormonal acne but mine is only on my chin area. Still I do believe that human body is so smart and hormones will be stabilized on its own. That's why I do not go to dermatologists, taking medicine but I do take tropical treatments like microneedling from time to time. It helps me to control the flareups. my acne was far more severe then yours in my teengage years. I ledt highschool early as my skin was so bad i couldnt leave the house..ACCUTANE gave me my life back , i slowly began to see my face again. I actually went a whole year without looking in the mirror.. It was soo hard but after accutane my skin was perfect although ive suffered from severe depression ever since.. I would have been more deopressed had i not gone on accutane... Youre so brave and amazing!

    Acne is fucking destructive
When I was a teenager my skin was flawless, once I turned 22 my flawless skin left me.
it has entirely destroyed my confidence and gave me mental issues. I have no desire to do anything or see anyone. I'm looking forward to having a healthy, clean skin , I hope someday it will happen

Thank you so much for making this video, for people like me who have never really experienced acne or learnt about how it can impact someone's life, and for those who will feel comforted knowing they aren't alone. This really helped to educate me, especially when you spoke about wanting to take more of a natural approach, and I can appreciate that for some people the medical route really isn't ideal! It's lovely to see you opening up so much about something so personal on your channel x

(TLDR: My skin is complicated and has changed a lot over the years. Acne is hard. I relate a lot. I appreciate your message and hope that one day I don’t hate my skin and that I can feel beautiful in spite of it.)
I’m 26 and have been struggling with acne since age 13/14. I’m prone to cystic acne (yay genetics) which has been more minimal since I left high school and especially since I left college, among other types of acne. Unfortunately, I have still been dealing with the other acne. According to my dermatologist it’s hormonal, so it’s likely never going away, and I have both adult and teenage acne symptoms. 🙄 I also have been using a million products over the years and that’s messed with me in another way: I’ve gone from oily skin in my teens to very dry and often dealing with peeling. I’m currently sick of literally hating my face and constantly wanting to hide. I haven’t been wearing makeup because of COVID keeping me home, and somehow that’s made me feel worse about myself. Acne isn’t a joke- it’s a seriously emotionally debilitating thing when it’s a long term issue. Thanks for putting yourself out there. You’re far braver than I am and I’ll do my best to draw confidence from your message.

I know you'd have gotten many advises on how to reduce the acne but from my experience I just want to tell you that my sister had worse acne just like yours. Then my aunt suggested her to use honey all over her acne and leave it for 5 minutes then wash it with lukewarm water. And don't use towel to dry your skin. Let it dry on its own. And it really worked for her. And she got her skin cleared in a month. I am watching you since 2015 Cerys. It's very painful for me seeing you going through all of this. Lots of love and it was very brave of you to do this.

To those who have mild or severe acne, please don't prick , rub or even constantly touch your acne. These two reasons worsen the condition because these cause irritation on your skin. I suffered acne before and went different medications, but none of them solve my acne issue. Just let your acne dry, as simple as that.
