As a housekeeper, we need all the time we can get. Sadly most people don't leave until the cheak out time of noon. So we get around 3 to 4 hours to clean 8 to 14 rooms alone (more of often then not). So yes, it feels like cheak in time is pretty late, but please remember the people working.
I don't know wot your hotel was, but almost all hotels have a 'membership club' that you can join online. Once you're a member, hotels are more flexible about checking you in early, out late, etc. You get a few perks. Hope this helps!
