- Finally I make an update to my montage of storyboards from "Steele's death." One of the deleted scenes in Balto. lol I tried piecing this together to the best of my knowledge. I honestly believe that there are more storyboards to this deleted scene out there somewhere. lol I hope all my subscribers enjoy this video, I will try to be more active, but life is hectic, haha.

Pretty cool to see these but it appears some of the story boards have been placed in the wrong order. Numbers in the lower right stand for scene/panel number. You'll want to put scene number in order first follow by their panel number. If you need help, just asked me. I went to college to learn animation. ^^

I think what's even worse/interesting about this ending for Steele is that it put so much emphasis on being top dog. The golden collar he was so proud of was his downfall. And now serves as the only sign of his final resting place/ grave. I bet his owner would be... Crushed....to learn the fate of his prized (and probably expensive) Malamute.
If Steele’s angry expressions weren’t terrifying enough......
Tell me about it - if he was willing to kill Balto in the finished film, Steele was *hellbent rage* in this deleted scene!

I'm glad this didn't make it into the film. I mean Steele survived a fall from a cliff but falling into a coal shaft does? It makes no sense! He's better living in Balto's shadow as we saw, his reputation meant more than life to him.
Same here this is really dark for kids even im scared....tho then again im still a kid but....this is the most scariest thing ive ever seen :< the the bloody part was so...geez i dont even know...nasty.... maybe??

I always found this deleted scene to be so fascinating and I love the fact that you've put the story boards together like this so we can see it play out. It's such a dark ending but still something I want to see out of morbid curiosity. I think it would be amazing for some of us in the fandom to get together and attempt to make this scene, animate it, provide voice work, stuff like that. it would make for an amazing fan project. Anyone interested in doing something like this please message me! I have a couple of people who can write scripts including myself so if there's anyone interested in any kind of voice casting, or animation work I would love to discuss the details!

Unpopular opinion:
I honestly think that this isn’t that dark. Sure, it’s kind of messed up, but not enough to be cut out from the movie like that. There are darker and far more morbid villain deaths out there: Frollo’s death, Scar’s death, and especially Clayton’s death. And may I add, they actually show them being killed.
The difference with Steele, is that this scene leaves his fate kind of unknown, as we don’t actually see him getting doomed.
In my opinion, this scene should have been modified to make it less heavy, not deleted.
We see Frollo fall ..like many villains we seen them fall to their deaths like the evil queen and Gaston. Over and done with. And with Scar its just nature. Their animals. Steele..is a dog. Which is an everyday house pet for many of us. I dont think kids will lool at their dogs the same after that XD
The irony that the dangerous dog was Steele all along would have been perfectly executed in this scene
I want to throw 2 in here of grisly deaths for villains from kids movies. Sykes from Oliver & Company and his 2 dogs. His two dogs were electrocuted to death on the subway tracks and Sykes was set Ablaze. And the horn King from the Black Cauldron disintegrated into nothing. And of course you can't forget to throw in Rasputin from Anastasia who literally rot and melt away into nothing.

During the Covid-19 pandemic 😷, when it was widely commented that “👨⚕️🧑⚕️👩⚕️ are heroic and more important (essential) than athletes, musicians, actors/actresses, and/or Catholics receiving sacraments,” I LIVED IN RATIONAL FEAR that people might start doing what the other dogs did to Steele in one of these scenes against Olympic athletes/medalists, symphony orchestra musicians, performing artists, and Catholics receiving sacraments- trying to take away Olympians’ medals and/or applause 👏 and standing ovations, and giving them away to doctors & nurses- and what I inferred from these scenes at the center of controversy, is the following:
“Lizzie, Olympic athletes, Catholics receiving sacraments, performing artists, and symphony-orchestra musicians are NOT important enough to merit rounds of applause 👏, standing ovations, awards, and/or recognition, even though the International Olympic Committee, Special Olympics International, the Catholic Church, and people in the world of performing arts 🎭 and symphony orchestras and concerts, respectively, not to mention doctors and nurses, say they are.”

Death:
Steele either got choked to death before he slipped
He either fell into a coal mine and died due to force of impact(explaining the possible coal on the screen)
He fell into a wood chipper(since ppl used wood throughout the movie, also explaining the "blood")
He fell into one of those double saws that rub against each other(also explaining the " Blood")
I can see why they cut this out. It was WAAAAYYYY to dark and innapropiate and it would've made the movie pg-13 REAL quick. I don't know why they were gonna add this in in the first place. What were they thinking? Why would they even write this?
What do you think the whole golden collar plot point was about?

I can see why they deleted this because it shows Steele being strangled and suffocating and they thought that it would be too graphic for kids to watch so they cut it out of the movie
But damn what a horrendous way to die
This scene would have been inappropriate for a kids movie
I know Steele was a bad dog and all, but even he doesn't deserve such a horrible agonizing death like that, and I'm sure Balto never would have wished that on him either. I think living forever under Balto's shadow is a far worse punishment than a horrible gruesome death one may or may never wish on their own worst enemy.
I think dying like that is actually worse, but it wouldn't have been as fitting of an ending for him.
The death scene sure was dark, but the storyboarding made it seem a little wonky tbh. Especially considering we see Steele's collar as being fit tightly around his neck, it seems weird that it was suddenly loosened enough for it to get caught against something like that. Plus, the way it played out just looked a little odd. And like you said, Balto would never wish this upon him. He would only kill if that were his only resort to survive and even then he'd be looking for any other more peaceful solution.
I honestly like canon better here, in this case. Steele's reputation meant more to him than his own life, so him living out the rest of his life under Balto's shadow AND being known as the asshat who risked the lives of many children and his team for the sake of glory just sits better. Him dying honestly feels a little too extra and dramatic.

Looks like everybody was watching above Steele, even himself at some point. I guess the lever not only opens the double doors on his feet, but it releases coal from above to be dropped in the bin, so Steele ended buried by tons of that stuff.
Yea pretty much, I’m still wondering how the collar stayed. I mean of course he slipped off of it, but you’d think that it’d at least fall off as well, or even keep Steele from falling due to the coal dropping from above.
While I can understand why they didn't include this scene in the movie, since it would overshadow the happy ending due to the darkness of this event, I can assure Steele pretty much deserved it: yes, being shunned out by his old teammates and friends is fitting considering Balto was the outcast and he was so thirst for glory and attetion, but that punishment seems too lighthearted when we take into consideration all the horrible things this dog just had done, and I'm not talking about bullying and sabotaging Balto, I'm talking about the fact that he sabotaged the pawprints on the trees so Balto and the team and his injuried master would get lost in the blizard and never get home with the medicine, therefore getting Balto, his team, and his master killed and sentencing ALL the sick children of Nome to die. This dog almost single-handledly killed half of the town and most of the children, and he was happy to do so, not showing any hint of remorse, because for him, his reputation and his glory was more important than all the town together.
While I'm beyond happy with the original ending, I think Steele got cut a lot of slack in here: I mean, come on, people, the dog was practically a killer and everything he got was getting shunned out, like a toddler in a time out. He deserved a punishment far bigger than that.

Dark. I watched this as a kid and i been awake the whole night. Next day i sleep and got nightmares.

While the artwork is phenominally eerie, the eyes of all the dogs are what really sell this to me: the way each dog squint and narrow their eyes in pure disgust and rejection and the way their pupils dilate when they all turn on steel really sells this to me: not to mention the stark contrast of steele's savage eyes filled with anger, to baltos softer, horror-struck face as he watches as the malamutes eyes grow more and more lifeless as he chokes on his own collar: you don't see many better cases of eyes in an animated movie👌

I always wondered why Steele never showed up in the sequels. Considering what a petty and vindictive sociopath he is, you'd think he would devote the rest of his life to destroying Balto and everyone he cares about. Guess you can make this your headcanon reason for his absence XD
Possibly. If only Phil Weinstein should have thought of that when thinking of having Steele appear in Wings of Change instead.

Being deleted makes a scene not canon anymore. Several characters from several films "died" in deleted scened but not in the movie. Don't loose hope, Steel is still out there.
@@Alejandroigarabide if he is hes either holed up depressed and maybe plotting somewhere or his owner gave him away for being a "failure" his owners ego is probably what created steeles attitude and behaviour - he clearly wanted to impress his owner and barely gets recognition from him. (as we vaguely see but it flies over a lot of peoples heads) so- hes probably in another town possibly somewhere far.(or banished.) when a dog behaves and fails someone like steele did when he got his rider nearly killed, and didnt care for him much, they often get sent away/unwanted/new owner - sometimes even put down. if we see him again itd have to be a visit from another town etc. probably getting into shit again.

Still looks a little out of order, but it does confirm how I believe it plays out; Steele gets snagged on the lever, the coal falls on him and he gets buried in the cellar below, leaving the collar behind.
I think even if it wasn't too dark (let's be honest Disney did far worse back in the day), it would've been difficult to incorporate this into the film when Balto's main goal overall is to get the medicine through.
I would have preferred if they kept this in the movie.

Pretty much. But also, it seemed that the lever caused coal to be dumped onto Steele and caused him to slip out from his collar and fall to his death in the coal shaft/pit.

For a while I wondered what became of Steele after the 1st movie & sense we didn't see him or was never mentioned in the two sequels & so this explains why.
Phil Weinstein could have Steele mentioned in the two sequels when he made them. Much better than appearing.
If a remake is made lets hope they change somethings. Like showing why Steele wants Jenna, why Rosy was the only human who liked Balto, and Steele fate.

uh he obviously wants her to be his prom queen to his football jock prom king kinda thing, she's clearly top of the female social media class, she's the only seemable husky female around, she's slender and beuatiful and her red coat stands out, which is desired by husky lovers - you don't often find ones like jenna. I would want that dog too (tho i dislike her personality) he thinks he deserves only the best - so that is his reason going for it. That kind of stuff is up to us to figure out, explaining every little detail that should be obvious if you use ur mind imagination knowledge obversvation etc would water it down. literally breaking it down xD...fine if you like that but these creators made the right call on there. But yes more about what happens in the end would be nice.

While this is certainly interesting to see i like the final version better, because Steele gets found out by the other dogs for the selfish jerkwad he really is as the tables are turned because now he's the outcast and Balto is the hero. There's just something so satisfying in that for we see he only cared about himself and nobody else, and was willing to risk a large number of ill children not to mention the sled team as well.
It's only fitting that Steele gets exposed and now all the other dogs in the town hate him and he'll likely never be able to show his face there ever again. He'll spend the rest of his days living a miserable existence in Balto's shadow and die alone as a disgraced dog because selfishly maintaining his image and status was more important to him than delivering the antidote to save all the ailing kids.

Thank you so much for posting this- although I must admit, I'm rather lost story-wise... was the 'Golden Collar' supposed to be a 'prize' for the dog who led the final team back into Nome? Or did Steele already have it before, as a symbol of his status as top sled dog? (Like Zira's suicide; I can also see why this scene was cut- pretty dang dark, although I think it would've suited Steele's character better).

Balto and other dogs horrified expression and reaction upon witness the death of Steele is truly understandable in moral sense even though they rightfully despise and condemned Steele for his selfishness arrogance egotism loathsome and despicable behavior and actions including willingness to led children die from disease and lying to all dogs how he is only survive in the ice however none of them has ever wanted or intended the gruesome fate upon him to happen especially for balto who never liked Steele to begin with and understandably hate him for how he mistreating bullying and demonizing him throughout movie and how he Willing to let children die by not bringing medicine misdirecting his and others dogs intended destination letting the, freeze and starve to death but even balto for his justified contempt for Steele never actually wanted him to dead because he and other dogs never intended something like the death of Steele to happen it shows that even peoples who despise someone for good reason and bad things they done has limits to what they’ll tolerate or willing go through the motions of what they where dealing and doing with someone as loathsome and awful as Steele to get what coming for them as much Steele is horrible self-centered and detestable person who deserved it what coming for him like getting it punishment and comeuppance but even he doesn’t deserve to die a slow bloody and agonizing death since the final version of his fate now being ostracized ditched and reviled by everyone who respect and love him now hate shunned and rejecting him because of his lies turned from hero and celebrity to being outcast and pariah it was ironic yet fitting satisfying and well-deserved punishment and comeuppance but in fact it was merciful 4:24

I kinda wished this happened still in the movie because I felt like Star and the other two dogs (I forgot their names) would of stand up for themselves and at least see what they did wrong for being on Steele’s side and do the right thing and also yes I get this scene was a bit dark and I get why it was deleted but I felt like it gave what happened to Steele after the first movie since he kinda disappeared after the events of the first movie.

In the original concept, Balto says Steel can keep the collar because he didn't want Steel to end up being seen as the village stray like Balto did. That's what got Steel so mad he pounced.

I don't remember all the details from the movie, but if the creators were to somehow insert this scene into the movie, I think it would've been nice to see some interaction between Balto and Jenna after it. The scarf Jenna gave Balto was yellow-ish, if I remember correct. During the sled quest Steele rips it off of Balto and returns with it to the village, where it's returned to Jenna. Steele died because he forcefully kept hold of his golden collar, while simultaneously and symbolically never won Jenna over by being forceful or ripping the scarf off from Balto and lying about Balto's fate. After Steele's death, Jenna is to give the yellow/golden scarf back to Balto, because he has earned her love, just like he earned the villagers trust and probably would have been _given_ the golden collar too, not forcefully obtaining it.

I'm glad they didn't kill off Steele like this he may have been a bad dog but even he didn't deserve such a horrible death like this Balto's and the others' horrified faces as they see him die is understandable they may have hated him for what he did and Balto and Steele may have been enemies but Balto never wanted anything bad to happen to him and not to mention Steele has an owner and his owner would be devastated by the death of his prized and likely expensive malamute dog.
In my opinion Steele was always one step ahead of Balto throughout the whole movie, if Balto wasn't close to the cave, the avalanche would have killed the sled team making Steele the only survivor.
