i agree with you...these days with the accessibility of what would've otherwise been niche info via youtube, many people that dont have years of interest and research into film/video/photography just see the FX30 as the latest and greatest camera they can buy for great video, and before it was released there were even beginners with deep enough pockets buying FX3s, and if they can afford it then good for them and good for Sony I guess lol, but like you said, there's a huge learning curve and context to why things work the way they do on a camera like this, and i just feel like whoever wants to get one needs to be ready to do a lot of learning and internalizing skills and best practices to get what they want out of it...i see a lot of people on forums like you mention, basically asking whats the easiest way to get a great image and they want a magical LUT or settings they can leave it on for everything or "best settings for a music video" when it depends on what kind of mood/aesthetic the music video calls for....its all super manual and granular with a tool like these cameras....90% of the time it isnt set it and forget it....

I shoot music videos with my fx30 and I use most auto focus. You need to spend almost 700 bucks to handle 4k 60 cine ei . I’m a pro and a videographer bought 1 and is asking how do I get my footage to look like Netflix . It’s all about exposure because no shutter angle

I originally got the ZV-e10 with the TT Artisan Lens f0.95 and while I loved the look I was getting with the lens, it was horrible for video on the ZV-e10. I quickly realized I would have to spend a lot more money on a lens with stabilization with similar specs or fix it in post or spend more money on a gimble... I was really disappointed. Ended up just returning the camera and got the fx30 instead and it's night and day with the same lens JUST due to the in-body stabilization. And just digging into it's features and watching other videos on ways to rig the camera up just has me a lot more excited to learn how to use it and grow with it. You definitely DONT NEED to get 100% out of it day 1. The ZV E10 just disappointed me so much, I didn't want to use it anymore, while the FX30 has me excited to learn and practice shooting video. I think this video makes plenty of valid points, but it also depends what kind of beginner you are and where you want to go with it in the long term.

    Benefits for beginners:
    10 bit
    larger body
    stabilization
    higher frame rates
    better screen
    video centric layout
    better autofocus
    flip screen
    better battery life
    better low light performance
This video is a criticism on SLOG. A beginner can buy this camera using auto modes and eventually learn SLOG.

As a beginner I am happy I bought this camera. I would pay that money for its awesome stabilization (and design) only. But this is definitely not 'the first camera' you should buy. If I didn't have experience with my A6600 I would struggle a lot right to the point where a hobby loses the most important part of it - fun.
It is like buying your first car. Probably a used one with less horsepower, and cheaper maintenance would work the best for most of us until we pick up what we really want from a car.

Great video, mate. I agree that it’s important the effort, knowledge, and real-world cost it takes to get good results from a camera like this. This video is great because it saves someone a spending a huge amount of money of this and then realising they don’t have the motivation to actually learn and gain the experience to get the results they’re looking for from it. You can just set the exposure control to PASM and shoot S-cinetone, which is what I’d recommend for a beginner coming from a regular camera. It’ll get you started and you can dig into S-log as you become more accustomed to the camera. 50% of the jobs I do I just shoot in S-cinetone

I know the learning curve is steep when it comes to lighting scenario but that shouldn't hinder me from learning the camera and loving it. Also people can switch the picture profile to s cinetone for ease of use but you won't get the full dynamic range and capability of the camera

I am planning a career change to videography an am currently saving for my first set up. I was pretty set on the fx30. I know it'll be a steep learning curve but I suppose my thinking has been that once I have the camera, I can spend a lot of time researching, practicing and learning before I start trying to make money with it. I'm in fulltime employment and can save/spend around £1000 per month in my current living situation, so I can acquire all the necessary peripherals over the course of a few months. I'm pretty experienced in grading and editing so that part doesn't scare me too much, it's more the actual ins and outs of the camera itself that is a bit daunting as I haven't really used a proper camera before. Having said that, I'm really set on becoming a skilled videographer and have all the time in the world to learn. Ultimately I want to make short films but I plan on going into real estate videos primarily. This video has been great for me, it has allowed me to set my expectations and given me a good idea of what to look out for and what to focus on. I still think I'm going to get it and just become a total hermit for as long as it takes to become proficient with the gear. Thanks for this, I'm saving this video to refer back to.

    • @PurposedLensPhotoMedia
      @PurposedLensPhotoMedia  Рік тому

So I have seen VERY mixed messages about this.
I have read that certain 10bit file types won't work on the free version while others will. I use the free version and have had no issues loading and editing 10bit footage. I believe this is a Windows VS MAC thing. 10Bit 4:2:2 from my Sony FX30 works in Davinci Resolve due to a licensing agreement between Apple and Sony.
This is also true when I shoot into my Ninja in ProRes 4:2:2. Since Apple actually is the creator of ProRes it makes sense that it works on their machines. This isn't the case with Windows users however, there are some workarounds for Windows users.
I am reading that you can do a conversion which will allow you to edit in 10bit 4:2:2.

I’ve been doing this professionally for 10 years. Shooting Sony’s, and Canon. I see some beginners commenting taking offense to this video or being defensive. That is a testimony to you don’t know what you don’t know. Can you be a beginner and use this camera? Yes. Please understand, this camera needs a lot of support accessories that a beginner typically doesn’t have. You are going to be spending more time dialing this camera in to get your shot. Beginners really should just be getting shots, learning composition, lighting, etc. Then there is post production. Thank you for breaking this down. The camera is great. It does require a separate level of skill set and equipment to get the best from it.

Honestly I never believed in “waiting” for a camera to come out.
      Here are my reasons.
1.) (Unless confirmed) - most cameras that come out are based on speculations and will either lack features someone “waited for” or doesn’t implement some features that we’re expected.
2.) You Will almost always pay FULL PRICE for a new camera. Buying older or used allows left over cash for other needed accessories.
3.) Time is money 💰- if you plan on making money with your camera (and you don’t currently have one) you are delaying your growth and progress by waiting for a camera.
4.) There are very few things that net you the best just because they are the best tools 🛠️.

Even though it's ideal to film in the base ISO's on the FX30, it's important to pass on to beginners that all cameras have base ISO's. I think your material is great but is misleading concerning the ISO options. Users of this camera are not locked into only filming slog3 with the base ISO's only. The base ISO only mode is when you film with CINE EI, which makes it easy to ensure you choose one of the two best ISO settings. If you choose flexible ISO mode, you can shoot in all of the other ISO settings if you wish, which can also capture some great images. Great points on everything else you mentioned.

Well Ceasar, thanks your take and thanks for the feedback. 😀
If you skip back to the 4:10 mark and listen through, I carefully explain to beginners the learning curve and the context of Slog-3 and it's relation to dynamic range. I also highlight Cine EI as being a guideline to help preserve dynamic range which locks the camera down to it's dual base iso.
When educating novice shooters (and being mindful of watch time on UA-cam), it's important not to over-explain or overcomplicate concepts and ideas such as flexible ISO. Although these aren't foreign concepts to some, they are to novice shooters.
This is especially true when the purpose of the video is to show the contrasts between shooting on an iPhone vs stepping up to a world filled with jargon, mathematical calculations and concepts.
In other words, it's VERY difficult to eat an entire thanksgiving dinner in one sitting, but leftovers (more videos at a later date) make it possible.
Lastly, my goal on this channel is never to mislead, this is why I carefully chose (by omitting or including) what content I believe my viewer base can understand, comprehend and execute on.

It seems you are taking things out of context.
Starting at 4:37 I preface (or introduce) the viewers to the optimal shooting mode within the FX30 (slog-3). I explain slog-3, CINE EI and base iso. At 5:38 I say "along with that" meaning I am connecting the previous material to the new material being introduced (slog 3 to dual base ISO)
In addition, at 5:42 I created an on screen graphic of what dual base iso's function is.
1.) My aim is always to provide clear, factual and helpful information based on my experience and facts.
2.) The onus 100% falls on the person who is watching any video on UA-cam to do further research (which is what I consistently encourage my viewers to do).
3.) Affectively conveying technical jargon (from start to finish) to beginners is a very in depth task (not everyone will fully grasp my teaching/talking style.)
4.) If one chooses NOT to buy this camera based solely on this one video and that particular statement WITHIN this video, that would be a fault in that person's ability to accurately acquire and process information.
I do thank you for pointing out an area that confused you. I am always open to hearing how others interpret and receive information that I put out.

One bit of detail that should be pointed out for anyone purchasing the FX-30. Davinci Resolve 19 Beta (not the studio version) doesn't seem to support all the 10 bit color formats within the FX-30 and will not import them correctly. I haven't tried the studio version just yet, as I had hoped to avoid spending $300 unnecessarily, but I am under the impression that the studio version should work with the 10 bit color files. To beginners: I completely, completely disagree. This is stupidly bad advice. This camera gives beginners a lot of ROOM to learn and have more satisfaction with their image in the long run. Videography is a lot of complex information to learn to begin with. There are no shortcuts just because you’re shooting with a cheaper camera. In fact, premium cameras are usually EASIER to use because they have more professional options. A camera that restricts you from using AWB is more of a shortcut because footage that is constantly changing WB (like footage shot with Sony’s AWB does) is such a pain to edit. Starting with a cheaper camera, you will inevitably run into a technical roadblock and wish “I should’ve invested in a better body” but you’ve already dropped hundreds or thousands on your first body and feel locked in. You may not be “ready” for the FX3, but that’s the whole point of learning. Get something that will challenge you to learn the basics, but will empower you to learn well past that as well. I made this mistake getting the a6600. Was excited to get to a point where I was ready to shoot pro 4K footage in Slog3, but guess what? Shooting in 4K with that cheaper body in 24p essentially disables the AF, especially with a low contrast profile. There were no forum posts about it, I had no help. I was just stuck and screwed. Still am! Cheap cameras come with serious limitations, expensive cameras come with a slight learning curve and an emptier wallet. But they aren’t worlds apart in complexity. But regardless, learning about your camera can only help you, and is the GOAL, not something you should be afraid of. Especially if you can afford it… just what the heck is this advice, dude.

You can always argue skill is what matters when it comes to quality but let’s be real, if you have to shoot something straight out of camera with no editing or S-LOG and could choose any Sony APS-C camera which one are you picking?

No disrespect but I understand where you are coming from with the cost of ownership, but it’s like buying a car, you need to buy gas, washer fluid, insurance, you need to change the oil, tires, breaks.
It’s something you need to do your homework on and understand what the costs are whether you are a beginner driver, or a beginner home owner for example. It’s the same for all cameras. Everything had an ownership cost. For both photo or video, you need flash or lights, you need lenses, you need bags to carry it all, and most of all, you need experience to understand how to use it all.
Liked your video but I think the cost of ownership was a little too much, especially if someone wants to enter this industry and they will have to make these purchases and investments regardless. Just like deciding to buy a car

    • @PurposedLensPhotoMedia
      @PurposedLensPhotoMedia  Рік тому +2

      I like your car analogy!👍🏾
Let's say you had never driven a car and wanted to get your license. The instructor hands you the keys and tells you to put on your fire suite, gloves and helmet.
He then leads you over to an F1 car and tells you to get in and start it up. You are looking for a place to put the key in but there is none. You are looking for your turn signal stalk but there is none. You are looking for an AC knob because it's hot out but .... there is none!
You're looking at 50 buttons on the steering wheel of the car not knowing what ANY of them do!Now by your logic you have to learn it anyway so might as well start now!
The better way to learn would be to keep it SIMPLE. Get the basics down like the rules of the road. How to drive while scanning the road ahead, how to merge into traffic safely, how to use your turn signals.
The FX30 is a camera geared for making films in controlled environments and it also requires the operator to understand it's capabilities. A new person who has never used a camera is 100% going to be confused by all the options, technical terms and workflow that's associate with this camera.
A beginner would be better suited to spend their money on something like a ZV-E10 ($700.00) and spend the leftover 1100 on lens, mic, and lights. This will teach them MUCH more than a camera body with no lens, CF EXP card, lights, lenses or mic.
