  • The North Burnett Regional Council was awarded the Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) Greenspace Regional Award for the Gayndah Riverwalk Project in 2020. Created by the local council in close collaboration with traditional owners, the Wakka Wakka people.
In 2022, the Wakka Wakka people acknowledged the work started by past generations, for their future generations, when the Federal Court recognised their native title over almost 114,000 hectares of the Burnett region.
The AIH returned to the region to provide a separate award in acknowledgement of the Native Title determination to the Wakka Wakka people, this presentation can be seen in this video.
The Gayndah Riverwalk includes bush tucker and bush medicine plantings, and a path that allows people of all ages and abilities to enjoy a stroll along the banks of the Burnett River in the shade provided by the plantings. This project is a legacy for generations to come.
