7075 aluminium alloy (AA7075) is an aluminium alloy, with zinc as the primary alloying element. It has excellent mechanical properties, and exhibits good ductility, high strength, toughness and good resistance to fatigue. It is more susceptible to embrittlement than many other aluminium alloys because of microsegregation, but has significantly better corrosion resistance than the 2000 alloys. It is one of the most commonly used aluminium alloy for highly stressed structural applications, and has been extensively utilized in aircraft structural parts.

What you could do, is build a rig (framework) to hold the plates about .5” - .75” at whatever angle you want. Remember that when you angle the plates to the impact vector, you are effectively increasing the “thickness” of the plates. If the plates were held in place, solidly, at roughly a half inch apart, the API might have passed three.
I’m going to take a SWAG that with the angle of the plates, your rounds were probably facing upwards 1.8” of T7 Aerospace grade Aluminum. It’s also called Armor Aluminum. That’s what the M3 Bradley, LAV-25, and the M1126 Stryker is made of. Lots of high end vehicle armor is AA7075 (Aerospace Aluminum 7075) or 6061. And now with “Transparent Aluminum” having become a real thing, it’s changing the Aerospace, armorers, deep sea, and many other industries.

The reason this aluminum is hard is they add a few percent copper. Aluminum is normally soft, because it is an FCC metal, the crystal structure with the most pathways for dislocation movement. Copper is also FCC, but reacts with the aluminum to form a separate phase that forms inclusions on the microscale that block dislocation movement.
This of course also has the unwanted side effect of making it much more vulnerable to galvanic corrosion, hence why they are always having to paint the stuff.
🙁
Don’t know where you learned that, 2000 series aluminum is the aluminum/copper alloy. It is also the most used aluminum in the aircraft industry, not 7700. 2024 t3 is the standard sheet metal, and 2117 is the usual structural rivet alloy. 7000 series is a aluminum/zinc alloy. 2024 can be subject to galvanic corrosion, but it will exfoliate when this takes place, and paint will do nothing. However the copper content is in such small quantities in any given portion that it is not enough to cause corrosion. It only happens when heat treated incorrectly, when the copper can start to migrate towards each other and create larger pockets which will cause an issue
@@smallgator Myself or the original?
I responded here to a soon after deleted post, saying this is a prime example of the Dunning Kruger effect. Really curious who he was talking about
So JD was correct in his statement. A few percent of copper is added for strength. I’ll have to trust him as to the reason why.
@@nidhoggr6148 He was correct, but got the alloy number wrong. 7000 series is a aluminum/zinc alloy, 2000 series is the aluminum/copper alloy. Besides that, 2000 series is the most used in the aircraft industry. I would know, seeing I am an aircraft mechanic by trade

If its the real deal, then yeah its totally bulletproof. this metal (with the help of other heat resistant ceramic coverings) is designed to withstand heat over 3.000⁰F and small debris, as small as sand, coarsing through 18,000 miles per hour or 5 miles per second. (Thats puny compared to your gun's muzzle velocity.)
Perfect for space shuttles!
Edit: (Thanks to dew2667 on letting me correct it, more in depth description on the ceramic coverings below.)
Shuttles were constructed the same as a regular aircraft, aluminum skin over ribs and stringers, not half inch thick aluminum. The 30,000 ceramic tiles covering the outside is what made them resistant to heat and small impacts. A piece of insulating foam impacting the wing leading edge caused the Columbia disaster.

The results would be different if the metal was placed at a 90 degree angle.
Francesco D'Alonzo the speed of the bullet does not change because something is on a angle but very strange things can happen to bullets when they hit an angled hard surface
@Francesco D'Alonzo Yes it would. Why do you think modern tanks have curved or skewed angles to their armor. The more curved a surface is, the more chance for a ricochet and penetration chances drop.
Francesco D'Alonzo plus, when you shoot an angled surface, it makes more metal for the bullet to penetrate, which is why, as the other guy said, modern, and older tanks, have angled armor, for there to be more metal to penetrate, and increase chance of richochet. that itself is an old technique, nowadays they use different metals and spaced armor to make it harder to penetrate on top of the angled armor.
Mechanical engineer here. Vertical pressure is the one that leads to penetration. Vertical speed of the bullet DOES vary with the positioning angle of the target resulting in a different amount of vertical force. V(y) = V.sin(*) and F=fn.(Vy)
Potassium plus iron equals alluminum type K ez 😂

Very impressive AA7075 alloy, actually beyond impressive !
I just look its density, it's almost 3 times lighter than common steel but sooo resistant.😲 Is it suitable for balistic armor use ?
I love to watch your tests made with fun and chips. :D
It use for space old shuttle for example
From France ❤🇫🇷
"Is it suitable for balistic armor use ?"
well as such yes but it not since its to heavy to more modern better and lighter alternatives.
You can't use metal as body protection against bullets, metal is a good conductor of vibration, it's has reverb effect on impact, which depending on the caliber, even if it's not penetrate the armor itself, ends up making a "meat juice" with your internal organs.
@@robson_leao A slab of 3 inch high grade aluminium would weigh so much that it would hardly move for anything below a .50 and any vibration it easily cancelled by some absorbing foam or similar behind it. A .50 cal would not be good due to the enormous force but there is pretty much not any body amour that would hold for that anyway.
