Howdy, folks! Dominic, Grizzly Adam, gundog4314, and stickyfingaz745 sent in some MRE's for testing - and we are unpacking all 5 plus reviewing the two oldest in this part of 1 of 2 of this MRE reviewing marathon! Sit tight - it gets a little gnarly with The Ala King & some really weird old chocolate.
And thank you everyone for watching & subscribing - hope
you enjoyed this one, as I certainly did making it!

Back in my day we called it "Chicken a'la S#*t" and it was pretty much universally hated by all. But luckily there is always one guy in the group that could/would eat ANYTHING and you could talk him into trading if you got it. Thank the Lord for that guy. Actually....you kinda are that guy. Keep it up. Peace.

maybe it's because I've never been in the military but these videos are so interesting to me. I think it's really cool how some of these last so long and the fact that you can heat them by simply adding water. they're like little time capsules too, perfectly preserved.

Read up on how the FRHs work, it's a very clever use of a simple chemical reaction to be able to safely heat food without fire.

    1985
    Pork Patties - foulness
    Beef Patties - excellent
    Chicken Tetrazini - okay
Frankfurters in Sauce - scary texture and flavor but not bad if warmed up (None of the 1985 stuff had heaters yet.)
Ham and Potatoes in Cheese Sauce - best, IMHO
The brownies and chocolate cookies, like the crackers, were hard enough to break teeth, but tasted really great when you were freezing and wet and in a hole somewhere.
Best hacks - creamer was very flammable and could be used to start a small fire so you could heat stuff.
Mixing the dried fruits (especially peaches and strawberries) with water, creamer and the crushed crackers and heating made a nice cobbler-type mess that was tasty. Fruit drink in the canteen with a purification tablet would mask the iodine taste of the tablet pretty well. Cocoa at night and coffee in the a.m. were always good, even cold. The toilet paper could be used for a lot of things.
Sorry, I don't remember much about those first gen MREs. The other big, new changes at that time were BDUs and the death of the jeep and birth of the HMMWV. And the M16A-2 was pretty frigging nice, too. Far better range than the older A-1 but no full auto on the ones I used - (three round) burst mode only. I really liked the full auto on the A-1. Wasteful, stupid, but so damned cool!
Great vid. Made me feel young again to see those horrible, brown pouches from my days as a soldier...
Up-thumbed and subbed, sir. I look forward to watching all your vids.

I am pretty sure "MRE Cobbler" predates "Ranger Pudding" (instant coffee, cocoa mix, peanut butter and an ounce of hot water) by at least a few years. I think that came along in the early 1990s, actually. But I was out by then, so I do not really know.

The Chicken a la King was delicious heated on the back of an M1A1 to the point where it lightly caramelized on the edges. The Beef Patty was one of my first meals and rehydrated it was just a softer styrofoam sponge squelchy with the broth. Fun video. Thanks.

21:10 - Fruitcake, if made properly, will last for years. It just gets better. If they had made it without nuts (sliced almonds, usually), it would have been excellent. If it is iced, with hard icing, and has a good slosh of brandy in it when mixed, it's pretty much indestructible - the icing sugar being a natural preservative, and precluding air ingress. A fat free fruit cake would possibly last even longer.

Having seen Kiwidude do that one I thought it looked good. Well there was a tiny tiny slit in the outer packaging. I don't know what happened to that MRE but it reeked the stench of a 1000 dead bodies PLUS rotting garbage. I feel bad for the mailman because it could be smelt before even opening the envelope. Needless to say it ended up in the trash but it reminded me of many a moment in your videos! Not sure if that is s good thing or a bad thing for you lol.

I discovered that if you warmed up the Chicken Ala King, as warm as you can get it, even hot, then it tasted very good. Seriously. Sprinkle in Tabasco sauce and the Chicken Ala King tasted even better. But few troops had the opportunity to heat up their MRE entrees in the field. The combat service support troops, working in the near and far rear areas had the opportunity, place, and time to warm up their MRE entrees.

Back in the pre-heater days, there weren't many options for warming up the pouches, either you ate it cold, stuck it in the engine bay of whatever support vehicle was available, broke out your canteen stove and boiled water, or stick it in your armpit...the ham & chicken loaf was pretty foul hot or cold ( no pun intended), but everything else was ok cold if necessary.
Still 100% better than the old MCI's...

I was in the Marines 98 to 02. It's funny you say that the Thai Chicken and Beef with Mushrooms is rare now, because nobody could trade them for anything back then. I guess most of them were busted open to make MRE bombs and get the Tabasco...

I was in from 86 to 2000 and had most of what you open. Beef patty was ok, used to make a cheeseburger on a potbelly with cheese and crackers. They had dehydrated pork patty too. Never had Thai chicken, usually got the omelet or corned beef hash or that nasty tuna cassarole. Beef stew was really good, don't remember what years that was around but I think earlier.

After watching these videos it seems older MRE's hold up better than modern packaging and preservatives

I can see how eating MRE is like a certain other activity. First you get to know'em, then you lay'em down(Nice!), then take off the covers, then things get heated and then you dig right in (Nice hiss!). Then you go for something new...or old!

Steve, you mentioned at the end of a review that some MCI,s can be worth some money, true? I have a unopened case of 1966, May, Lot 45, an am wondering of it’s possible value in either trading, or selling. Love your videos 100%.

ive had all 3 of the light brown ones, and i love them all, and i think i predicted a jalepeno cheese for this ;)
beef with mushroom was the least common in my opinion from my experiences...
also, i feel like the late 90's early 00's mre's had either skittles, m&m's or charms... i dont remember the sir lipton brisk tea either...

It’s a sin to waste food. If you have MRE’s be sure to consume them before they spoil or if they do expire send them to Steve, he’ll eat it. Steve’s a Savage 😎 👍🏼🤙🏼
