    I know this may be late, but you can feed them beetle jellies. You can buy em at beetle stores or you can make your own. I own beetles and they love their beetle jellies.

    • @michaelapostol3891
      @michaelapostol3891 3 роки тому +1

      To add: these jellies are very safe for beetles and the perks are it doesn't rot and it also don't smell. So, you can basically leave it in their enclosures for weeks (or maybe days, knowing that beetles love them so much they probably finish it earlier than expected 😂)

    Not sure in regards to the apple. But the first time I kept these beetles, I had one ‘die’. Like it was completely stiff, had not moved in hours and hours and I was 100% sure it had passed away. Even to the point where I had started to pin it for preservation. LUCKILY I didn’t actually need to pin him through his body so was never pierced. I say luckily, because I came back to finish pinning him the next morning and he was GONE. Vanished. Then I found him crawling around the workbench.. fully alive and well. I still have absolutely no idea what happened..

      Yeah they can play dead really well, hence why I decided to keep them in a separate enclosure for a little while in case they woke up, but sadly they never did :(

    Sorry for your loss. Owning various - and especially exotic - pets is a trip down with joyful and sad moments. Best wishes to the next batch.
    In my beetle caring hobby - starting from 2017-, I haven't had any beetle keel over because of food. (Or that's what I remember, it's been a long time). The food I serve for them is fresh; the moment they are starting to look rotten/smell alcoholic, I take it away. Yes, fermentation makes the fruit develop sugars. But for my nostrils (and eyes), it isn't pleasant.
    A theory I have for this is that the apple started forming patulin as it started to rot. (That was the only logical thing I found from the Net, so it could be potentially else as well). Patulin itself is toxic to animals, even resulting in death. Most of the studies done on it were with bigger animals, so the intake for beetles is definitely lower.
    Hopefully, this helps.

    Don’t feel too bad I’ve had my fair share of massacres. All of my isopods died due to lack of spraying (I didn’t know how to care for them properly) and I left another batch with my mom and they all died again for the same reason I was definitely sad. Also had to throw out all my mealworms and beetles that I had been breeding for a year because they got infested with grain mites. Luckily I still have some babies in her tank to start all over again but that was devastating. It is good to try to make light of the situation these things are bound to happen despite our best efforts all we can do is get more and try again at least now you know to avoid apples and I know to spray my isopods and never use oats as substrate. As sad as it is for me making it a learning experience helps a lot.

      That has happened to me a couple of times. Unfortunately, spotting mites on crickets and in mealworms has meant they had to go. I thought the best/most humane way was to put them in the freezer as I didn't want to release them into the wild or kill them in a painful way.

    I was sent a tub of hornworm larvae eggs months ago, had no idea what I was doing, but I researched and started feeding them veggies when they ran out of their paste food. I wanted to raise them and then pin them when they passed naturally.
    One night, I decided to toss a bunch of spinach in the container with them. I rinsed it and tie it up a bit. The next day I lost half of them.
    Turns out, spinach is one of the worst things to feed insects unless you grow it yourself, as it can be saturated with pesticides still, even after being rinsed.
    Long story short, I completely understand your guilt :(
    Edit; I want to add that I had no idea the hornworms were coming to me. The place I order my dubias from just sent them to me randomly.

    Fruit beetles live around a year, are they the original ones you raised? You maybe got them at the same time so passed around the same time? I had some male leaf insects and they only live a max of a year and were born from the same ova = seemingly mass murder at the end of their lifespan 😬 As sad as it is, may just be natural 🙂 I’ve not had any of my detritivores pass from decaying apple and I’ve had a ton of millipedes, snail species etc so I wouldn’t worry too much unless you think there was contamination 😊

      I did think that, but I think its very unlikely they'd all die at the same time. I think we're on our 3rd generation now. I believe I originally started off with like 9 grub, so it's probably a mix of generations.

    • @thevintagebookwolf4953
      @thevintagebookwolf4953 3 роки тому +1

      @@leopardgeckotalk I have alot of these guys too and more often than not they do synchronise in death.
      You keep the grubs with the adults correct?
      I have two tubs one with adults and grubs one with just grubs.
      When the adults die usually the grubs can dispatch of the whole thing in a hour.
      You'll probably find you think your beetles are still there because another pupae hatched out ^w^
      Replacing the one that died randomly.
      Now you've seen a synchronised death and the grubs cant nibble them fast enough for you not too notice.
      If you started finding dead grubs however that would be different and something wrong with the apple but I don't think you did.
      So I wouldn't feel guilty for this the beetles just synced up when your used to the odd one dying here or there.

    Did you definitely wash the apple before you froze it? Just thinking apples might have more pesticides than other fruit maybe? Could possibly be that fruit that has a higher content of citric acid has a different decay process and they can like biologically process fruit that has lower citric acid content or something? • @Dragonemperess

    One of the best ways to go, but I'd put a bit of food in there just to be sure they're dead. Even still, how long have you had them. I had a mass die off of a dubia colony myself when they got around 2 years old. Then phorids got involved and things got nasty, but I digress. They may have reached old age, and maybe the alcohol if it was fermented was enough to knock them off. But again, it just could have been their time. Are the larva okay?
