I’m 55 now, I hope Annabelle knows how she influenced a bunch of teen girls at the time. She was living proof it was cool to be different 🙌 changed my life Annabelle…Thank you😘
Not to undermine anyone, but Annabella did what Taylor Swift does now, but dancing backwards and wearing docs. But Taylor is amazing, so no hate at all. Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it! Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimm yes but Annabelle did it long before Taylor or almost anyone else did it. I'm also 55 years old and I don't remember anything like her at that time or before.
Annabella, Debbie Harry, Poly Styrene, Chrissie Hynde, Pauline Black etc. there were so many incredible female musicians/performers in the post punk music scene. As a somewhat alienated nerdy high school girl in NYC I absolutely adored all of them.
@@PWilliamGrimm "...the oppression of Thatcher, the plastic promises of Reagan." Yawn, Snore. It was a great time filled with one hit wonders like BWW. That's all.
@fastinbulvis2223 Thanks for watching and commenting - I appreciate the criticism, but I hope you watched past that one line, as it's not a political doco at all. The whole point of that sentence is to emphasize that Bow Wow Wow was a break from the difficult political times of 1980-1983, and there was a lot more going on in that year than one-hit wonder,s and BWW 's music - which is actually pretty packed with songs for a band that lasted less than 4 years - were joyful for a lot of people that wanted to rebel against any leadership. Anyways, thanks again for watching and commenting - I hope you take time to watch the whole doc - I really do think it will give you some happiness - it makes me happy, at least. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimmThanks for your kind and thoughtful response. I did watch the documentary and did enjoy it. Thank you. I remember those times very differently. From 80-83 I was 18 to 21. Family life might have been difficult, as we were many (8 children and a single mother), but not the times we were living in. Besides, things are primarily cultural, not political. Speaking for myself, at that age I was thinking of starting my life, looking for work, making enough $ to get out of Dodge, having a good time, meeting people, even falling in love. And, as I'm sure you'll agree, during it all the music was central. In any event, thanks again for your kind response and for the documentary.
Really have to give her mom credit, she made sure that Annabella wasn't just a manipulated airhead, she comes across as well-spoken, educated, and intelligent.
I think Annabella was definitely all those things, and having a supportive mum must have been important to maintaining them. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
Indeed, some great 80s bands out there that are underrated and Bow Wow Wow are one of the besst. I'm working to find my next subject, which will be another 80s band. Thanks for watching and commenting! Best, PWG
There will never be another time like that. We lived in the golden age of music and didn't even know it . Even though much of my music collection consisted of Punk and Hardcore Punk , I knew who all the other bands were, didn't like most of them though until much later in life. Imagine re-discovering Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys in 1994 and finding that music far more appealing than the utter shit that was popular at the time. There's absolutely nothing in the last 40 years , as far as pop is concerned, that has grabbed my attention.
For me what set Bow Wow Wow apart was the happy, carefree attitude of its sound. It did not seem to have the same negativity and nihilism of the other punk bands of the time (which I also like but for different reasons). The sound was such a vibrant blend of rockabilly, Bo Diddly, fantastic rhythms, and light-hearted pop. Nothing like it.
I was a big fan of Bow Wow Wow in the early 1980s and even made a screen print shirt featuring the band's I Want Candy album cover of Annabella. Thanks for making this documentary of a great band.
Thanks for watching and commenting. It means a lot to me. It's great to hear from Bow Wow Wow fans - super cool you made a screen print shirt of Annabella - that is so perfectly early eighties post-punk. I love it. Thx again for watching and sharing your thoughts. Best, PWG
I believe anyone that arrived here to watch this knows that this assembly of four absolutely brilliant talents was LIGHTNING captured in a bottle at the perfect NEW WAVE moment in time. (either way, credit to Malcolm or not) Their sound was amazing, only wished they could have lasted longer, their trajectory was just starting! Age 62, and Bow Wow Wow is still the most heavily rotated music choice on my phone.
Hey there! Thanks for sharing your perspective and I really couldn't agree more. It's rad you have stayed a fan for so long, but the music really is that good. I hope you enjoyed the doc and thanks so much for taking the time to comment and share. I very much apppreciate it. Best, PWG
When The Last of the Mohicans came out, my friends & I found ourselves hopelessly in love with the girl sporting the mohawk on the album cover. We were barely in our teens, and it's crazy to think so was Annabella at that time. Very cool documentary, brought back tons of memories.
Thanks so much for watching and the kind words. I was only 12-13 when they came out and I remember ( a bit fuzzily, admittedly) experiencing the same thing! I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment with your story. Super cool to hear. Best, PWG
Their music still can't be duplicated by anyone, nor has anyone even come close ! To me they are the epitome of the early 80's energy and something that a lot of artist try to attain to, but never even get close...... ORIGINAL ❣
They really did make an original sound that still is present in a lot of post-post-punk and pop. No one really gets it like Bow Wow Wow got it. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. It really means a lot to me. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimm Thanks soooo much for posting this great bio. i was in the dark of when Boy George came into the their story, so this is perfection on all the details. I really enjoyed it 🏆
This was a really well researched and entertaining documentary. I really thought I knew this story but there was tons in here that connected dots I didn’t even know about. Well done!
Thanks for watching and for the very kind words! Makes me feel great. Yes, some of the topics were a little foggy but I did my best to tell the story as I saw it. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. I know life is hectic, so I appreciate your time and interest. Best, PWG
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it so much, and it was such aa pleasure to make a Bow Wow Wow doco. Amazing band! Thanks again for watching and commenting. Best, PWG
Loved BWW and especially Annabella Lwin. I wonder how many bedroom walls her face adorned, back in the early 80's😊 Great small doc and insight in to an iconic band. Well done sir.
Much respect and appreciation to you for putting together this excellent and overdue history of (and tribute to) one of the most unique and exciting bands of the “New Wave” 80’s. Fun side note: I had a massive celebrity crush on Annabella when I was 15 and, for some reason, became fixated on this fantasy of meeting her while on the dance floor. Fast forward two decades and change, and after spontaneously deciding to go into The Viper Room in Hollywood solo one night, I bumped into someone while on the dance floor and turned around to see Miss Lwin dancing and smiling that magnificent smile of hers at me. We would go on to become good mates.
Aw, thanks very much for watching and giving your perspective. I'm very glad you like the doco, I tried to put all my passion into it and still be as non-biased as possible. That's a great story about meeting Annabella in the Viper Room - what a rad place to run into her. I (secretly) hope she watches the video one days and enjoys it. Thanks again so much for commenting and watching. It means a lot. Best, PWG

@@PWilliamGrimm I definitely will. I know you can only put the time, energy and effort into creating a doc if you’re truly passionate about the subject matter, but a doc about Bow Wow Wow’s contemporaries Missing Persons is long overdue as well. Amazing yet under appreciated band! Just a thought ✌🏻

Thank you for doing this! I was an instant fan after I heard Sinner, Sinner, Sinner on KROQ in LA in 1981 or 1982. So many great songs. I only got to see them once but it was a blast.
Thanks very much for watching and for the kind words. I really enjoyed making it and Bow Wow Wow deserves a solid documentary. Thanks again for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
I am super jealous not to have been able to see them at that time. They have a massive reputation as having been a banging live band. Thx a lot for watching and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it! More cool docos coming soon. Best, PWG
Hey! Thank you so much for watching and commenting with such kind words. As Cyndi Lauper said, "money changes everything," particularly on UA-cam. I'd rather do them on my terms and eat beans! I'm working on another one on another rad band - couple of months or so. Thanks again for commenting. It tickles the algorithm and warms my heart. Best, PWG
Dude - I was in the shower just now and had “Louie Quatorze” stuck in my head and thought “I really want to watch a documentary abou them, I’m sure they have an interesting story based off of the few things I know, although probably one doesn’t exist” and 10 minutes later I find this. I’m only 2 minutes in, but I’m stoked to watch this. Thanks for making this

Great band. Great musicians. Massive influence on me. Leigh is a great bass player , Matthew sadly gone way too early. what a talent, see you on the other side man keep "Rockin". Like all bands sometimes it's a rough ride. "Progress thru conflict" Thanks for this man. Really Really appreciated
Thank YOU for watching it. They were really a great bunch of musicians, so tight. Don't forget Dave the drummer - such a perfect match, in a time when it was really needed. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment. Best, PWG
Really enjoyed the documentary. I was a huge Bow Wow Wow addict, still am. Their music is uplifting. And then there is Annabella... OMG, a beautiful, bright, sensitive woman. Again, thank you for giving us this documentary
Thank YOU for watching and commenting. I am super grateful and agree that Bow Wow Wow is very uplifting and a joy to dance to, as well. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Best, PWG
I saw Bow Wow Wow live at Leeds Warehouse and Matthew and Annabelle were arguing constantly about his loud guitar, everytime she said turn it down he would tell her to f off and turn it up, what player Matthew was.
Matthew was a monster innovator and true punk at heart. Your story of them bickering on stage seems to sum up their relationship pretty well! I'm really grateful you watched and thanks for commenting! Best, PWG
lots of clips I'd never seen before in there, nice work. someday I hope to see "Annabella's Bow Wow Wow" but every time they play out here I'm away and miss it.

Tremendous presentation thank you! I followed the band’s fortunes at the time. It was difficult to find that cassette pet when it came out. As for the Ants before the band split on Adam - I can tell you that they were the HIPPEST punk band and had a huge army of fans who would not listen to any other group. They deserve more recognition than they get
Thanks so much for your comments and kind words. It must have been super cool to be part of that scene. I agree both that era of the Ants and Bow Wow Wow deserve more recognition. Maybe they'll start getting it now! Thx again for watching and commenting! really appreciate it! Best, PWG
Bow Wow Wow was my second concert ever( Queen my first ironically) Feb 1983 University Of Bpt and band was amazing! 40 yrs later I just saw Annabella at the Totally Tubular tour and she still rocks and looks and sounds great!! Unfortunately Wang Chung, who I also saw 40 yrs ago open for The Cars on Heartbeat City tour, are still not my thing! There’s alot to be said for consistency I guess!! To each their own! Enjoyed your documentary immensely! Also have a vintage Gretsch in collection from Matthew and Marco Pirroni’s influence. I was gigging at 15 playing MTV hits around tri state area so I kinda relate to that era of time!
Oh wow, I wish I had a Vintage Gretsch, I only have a Gibson "The Paul," which is not nearly as cool. Very jealous you got to see Bow Wow Wow, I would have loved to have seen it. I'm definitely going to catch Annabella next time I can, I am sure she is great. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it! Best, PWG

Fantastic video. I loved them back in the day. I also had no idea the band used to be the Ants. Adam wasn't the same without them but now i understand a bit more about why i liked BWW so much.

31:42 Take people at their word. Malcolm really comes across as a Svengali. I loved Annabella - I feel she paved the way for the likes of Neneh Cherry.
Malcolm was a complex cat that I don't claim to understand fully, that's for sure. And I think Annabella pave the way for Neneh and tons of other talent. I feel like today's music still has a lot of Bow Wow Wow in it. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I am very grateful. Best, PWG
Great video, I appreciate it greatly! One thing I think it lacked was a mention of Annabella and Leigh reforming Bow Wow Wow in early 2000s - and then falling out again. I wonder why did Gorman prefer to do the BWW stuff with some other singer (if it was his idea in the 1st place) - I think it's Annabella's voice and Leigh's incredible bass playing, coupled with 2 very capable musicians who were able to replicate Matt's and Dave's parts were a great combo. Anyway, great work!
Hey there! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. It really does mean a lot to me. From your user name, I suspect you're a bassist and thus a Gorman fan. Gorman is amazing - I hear his influence in so many bands (i.e. Primus!) and Matthew is all over John Frusciante from the Chili Pepper's sound. I also think Gorman influenced Flea. I knew of the reunion and subsequent split of Annabella and Leigh, but I left it out for two reasons: (1) length - I was very aware of time and was determined to keep it under an hour - I had to pick and choose some story lines, and some, including that one, stayed on the cutting room floor (well, it's digital, so no actual cutting room or floor, lol) ; and (2) I tried to stay away from anything too negative. Why bother? There's enough negativity in the world, and Bow Wow Wow was all about positivity, I think. That being said, I would love to see Bow Wow Wow reunite and release an album of new songs - Annabella, Leigh and Dave, with John Frusciante replacing Matthew on guitar. The funny thing is, I'm quite confident John Frusciante would do it, but the other three wouldn't! Anyways thanks again for watching and providing a thoughtful comment. I super appreciate it. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimmyou suspect correctly! And, actually, I'm fairly new to Leigh's playing - of course I knew "I want candy" but I'd heard "Wild In The Jungle" one or two days before finding your video and my jaw hit the floor. That bassline is absolutely bonkers! Why he's not a household name is really beyond me. Anyway, my discovery of that song sent me down the Bow Wow Wow rabbithole and, all of a sudden, there's your video :D Funny thing you mention RHCP - they even name dropped Bow Wow Wow in one of their songs (it might have been "Suck My Kiss" if I remember correctly)! And yeah, Frusciante definitely might be up for it. As for Dave - I've heard he simply doesn't want to leave London and Leigh lives in LA, so... it might be problematic for that reason alone.
This was Beautifully put Together , , I had the Pleasure of Meeting Annabella at one of her Gigs In England ( Roadmender Northampton ),It was a Great Gig , And She Bought me one of her Band T shirts , She is one of the Most Beautiful People i have Ever Met . Hope She Comes back to the UK again .
Hey there! Thanks for watching and the kind words. That's a great story about Annabella - what a lovely and generous person. I have never had the opportunity to see any incarnation of BWW, but I plan to see both Annabella and Leigh's versions of BWW in 2025! Thanks again for watching and commenting. It is very much appreciated. Best, PWG
As a teenager, she was my Brittney spears. Annabella was all the manufactured rebel girl I needed. I loved her & the band. I was their target audience. In America they were everything exotic & brand new! ❤🎉😊

Nice documentary gave me a lot of insight into this band. I loved them from day one and enjoy the unique sound of the guitar and drumming and of course, beautiful Annabella Lwin
Thanks so much for the compliment! Glad to hear from someone who was there from the beginning. What a unique sound and style! Thanks again for watching and for commenting. I am grateful for both. Best, PWG
I met Annabelle in Washington D.c opening for U2 in a converted movie theater in the Adams Morgan part of town. She and I the youngest people in the building by many years. Went up to mezzine private booth to smoke some pot. Then a young Bono found us. I held out a joint to him.Said "no thanks"and pointed to my Jack D. Fifth. Took a swigg, and headed down to the stage. I remember nobody could sit in the old time theatre stage seats or stand in front of them.
Wow that's a super rad story. Thanks so much for sharing! It was an amazing scene, I really wish I had the chance to experience it in person, but those kinds of scenes come and go quite quickly. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Your post was pretty hilarious and I appreciate it a lot. Best, PWG
Cool upload & took me back to my council estate bedroom in my teens in the UK playing vinyl on a hand me down deck, i pulled the volume knob off & reset the volume & blamed it on decent presses we got those days & my parents never clicked. I was far too young to notice the managers were the same as the shop owners you did paper rounds for, we just got paid in cash at the end of the week. Malc did get me into graffiti as well along with a few slaps off my step dads spray paint but i had my 15mins of fame in the local paper for being a vandal but not caught. Glad we have seen some of the 80's bands live from top of the pops of late playing venues not festivals, Annabella is on the list....Thanks.
Oh, wow - those are some rad stories to hear. Would have loved to have been there for that scene. Influenced so much else. Thanks for watching and sharing your story with your comment. i enjoyed reading it. Thx again. Best, PWG
I had suspected he was dodgy but I've never before seen McClaren in such a bad light. Thank you for enlightening me to this. He is nothing now. Anyway, besides that revelation, it's a great, informative and enjoyable documentary = Nice one! 🙂
Yes, Malcolm was a complicated fellow. I really am grateful for the kind words, and taking the time to watch and comment. I am listening to your band now and digging it. Thx again. Best, PWG
Towards the end I thought that Matthew wasn't really mentioned enough, when the focus quite suddenly turns to him, and we get a better insight into the breakup than I ever had. Yes, I do have a signed copy of the Chiefs of Relief album with him in the centre of that cover, but still didn't realise what a driving force he was for that change. Still, it had been clear how little he and Annabella got along for a while before the breakup. The first I heard about this group was early 1980, maybe January, when it was reported Malcolm had kicked Adam out and intended to become the singer himself. Not a good idea. But his solo singles later were quite OK. Thanks for this well made exposition of the group!
Thanks so much for watching! Matthew was an incredible character and massive musician. Very jealous of your signed copy of Chiefs of Relief. Thx again for watching and commenting. Best, PWG

Well done mini doc - responsible, organized and researched. Love the clips and editing. This needs to go into the Smithsonian or something. Annabella made some choices however coerced but she looked at herself as an artist first and it shows. I love evry bit of what Bow Wow Wow embodies and the sound resonates. Thanks for the reminder.
Great work! They were a band I appreciated more as time passed. First album is a beautifully produced masterpiece. The instrumental track, Ourang -Outang, is amazing!

@@PWilliamGrimm wish this memory was a little more intact but vaguely recall that when I went with several school friends to see them at St Albans City Hall in March 1981 (aged 14) we got there early and somehow ran into the guys (or maybe just Dave and Matthew?) and they stopped and chatted with us and were super friendly and nice.
Thanks very much for the kind words! I agree that Bow Wow Wow was really underrated. Those are always the funnest bands to learn about! The AI is just me experimenting. I'm not sure it's perfect, but I like it anyways. Thx again for such kind words and watching. I really am grateful. Best, PWG
So much talent in this band, it's crazy. And so many people only know "I Like Candy" (and perhaps "Do You Wanna Hold Me" to a lesser extent). I overlooked them as the one hit wonder band with the teenaged singer for waaay too long. My loss.
Me too! They are a much more textured band than I really knew before I started researching this doco. Thanks for watching and commenting! I do very much appreciate it. Best, PWG
Really underrated band - but it's never too late to rate highly. Matthew was amazing. Thx for watching and I am glad you enjoyed and commented. Best, PWG
Plenty of intelligent piercing observations from the main players, that's a good start. McClaren really was a _magickal_ presence - and together with Vivienne Westwood - well, just incredible, a perfect storm for the groups lucky enough to come through that vortex of genius at the time. Often when I hear Bow Wow Wow I think about BA Robertson trying to patronise Annabella Lwin on his show that time and I wish she'd stayed sitting there in front of that audience and torn him several new arseholes before walking off instead of just the one (although she still annihilated him, the old fool, haha). Anyway great to see a documentary doing Bow Wow Wow justice, such a phenomenally talented and bright bunch whose legacy grows as the years pass 💜
Haha, yeah I considered putting that BA Robertson interview in the doco, but it didn't quite neatly fit. There are a couple things I was going to add - there's a great interview where Annabella and Matthew bicker in almost a big brother/little sister way that is classic - but I tried to keep it under an hour. It was a perfect storm, indeed! Thanks so much for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment. It means a lot to me. Best, PWG
B A did nothing wrong but Lwin knowing she'd stripped naked to sell records at underage groomer McLarens behest could hardly be held up as a beacon of womens empowerment afterwards and likely felt embarrassed then everyone blames B A to save her blushes and help McLaren scurry away to continue focusing on underagers with Madam Butterfly. Very strange how Yewtree skipped over him when he's surely as bad as Saville which may explain why McLarens son burned all his dads memorabilia inc some Chicken magazine which may well have refocused Yewtree upon the labour party what with PIE and Minipops Channel Four promoting McLaren there in early-mid 80s.
I never managed to see them unfortuntately. I've seen shows at the Ritz though and i bet that wasa amazing! I hope you kept the autograph. Thanks for watching and commenting. I know time is short, so I'm honored you took the time to share your story. Thx again. Best, PWG
@@LannieLord I saw them in the spring of ‘82 at the Ritz NYC. A bunch of us from my high school went. The band sounded great and Annabella was so captivating to watch, energy off the charts. They were at their best then, I Want Candy later got them into the mainstream but the music wasn’t as good imo.
@@PWilliamGrimm It was in the afternoon , Annabella was walking in to the soundcheck with some guy. I stopped her on the street. She signed for me and then said "Do you want his autograph? He's Buddy Holly ". I wonder who the guy was . Could it have been McClaren ?
Unless he had a shock of red hair it probably wasn’t Malcolm. Maybe her chaperone. Or Dave the drummer who kind of looks like Buddy Holly if he wore glasses. Do you remember what he looked like? Did you keep the autograph?! Thanks again for all the story! Best, PWG
Saw them for the first time in St. Albans in early 1981 when I was 15, and they changed my life. Went to Worlds End shortly afterwards, where Jordan sold me a squiggle print shirt, people were just hanging out there having fun, it was my entrance into fashionable London, a way of life didn't know about before, and one which I pursued fervently thereafter. Became good friends with Boo, one of the dancers a few years later. Annabella was an electrifying performer, a teenager possessed by something she didn't seem fully aware of. They were extremely naughty, and the dubious underage sex aspect of them didn't seem inappropriate to me at the time as I was a teenager with burgeeoning sexual feelings. Viv and Malc would be incarcerated if they tried it now. Very tiny correction, the gig at the Lyceum on 12th April wasn't cancelled, I went, but George was billed, and didn't appear. Thanks for the doc!
Oh, wow! Thanks so much for your recollections and corrections. I agree with you on all points and I am really thankful you took the time to share your memories with. me. I wish I could have seen them back then - I'm working on catching shows of the new configurations as quickly as I can. Thanks again for watching and commenting. It means a lot to me. Best, PWG
Thanks very much for the kind words. I really appreciate and I also super dig that album. Thanks again for watching and commenting, It's very much appreciated.
Malcolm Maclarren was a shit, and punk was just a uniform. It’s a shame Annabella wasn’t looked after a bit more, she could’ve been an interesting singer. My two penneth worth
As a "Malcom manufactured band" I don't know why this band so grabbed my attention or why it has persisted, but they are one of my all-time favorites...... Even their deep cuts are very interesting.... They seem to transcend the one who brought them together
Yes, I agree - Every one of their tunes has something compelling about it. A very tight band! Thx for watching and commenting. Much appreciated. Best, PWG
Jordan was never in the Ants. She was managing them for the Ginger Wanker until he stole Adam's drummer and guitar player to form Annabella and The Ants aka Bowwowwow. Adam finally got the good sense to tell McClaren to piss off and got a real agency to rep him.
Thanks very much for watching and your comment. When I narrate that Jordan was an "occasional" member of the Ants, I was more referring to her performing occasionally on "Lou" - but it may not come across as informally intended. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks so much for both watching and commenting, I really do appreciate it. Best, PWG
Yeah they were! And cassette collections, too! And for good reason. A real banger of a band. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated. Best, PWGG
I pretty much just knew their one big hit, but it was interesting to see the whole story of the band, like how they started out as the Ants. And musically, they had a unique sound. And Malcom McDowell's whole Svengali / mastermind thing going on. Definitely an iconic band of their time.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I'm glad you learned a bit more about the band. I tried really hard to make it more than just about a "one hit wonder" band because I don't think they were. Thanks again for watching, it means a lot to me that you took so much away from it. Best, PWG
My issue is the way Annabelle was sold. She was sold knowing that she was underage. She was sold naked and she was sold to grown men. I thought it was disgusting when they were doing it then! Looking back on it now and seeing what he did to the relationship between her and her mother. He owes her a huge apology!! The problem is this personality type never sees their part anything that they do. I feel that she was utilized to make a quick buck and nobody ever stopped to think about her long-term.😢
Hey thanks so much. I'm super glad you enjoyed it. Great band and it was a lot of fun to make - I learned a lot! Thx again for watching and commenting. Best, PWG
I am very jealous! They were great live! Thanks a lot, seriously, for watching and taking the time to comment. I read them all and it's really nice to see people's reactions. I hope you enjoyed it. Best, PWG
Annabelle was such a babe! But, I so loved that hybrid however accidental or deliberate it was, of Burundi and New Orleans Mardi Gras rhythms with a bass player and drummer who seemed to understand such. 'Wild In The Country' being their champion expression of this. (American media here falling into the usual error of giving McLaren TOO MUCH CREDIT. Though to give him no credit would be as bad)
Hey there, thanks so much for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. Yes, Annabella is a lovely woman, and I think the band got the sound just right - really tight. As for Malcolm, I tried to write and tell the story the way I saw it, but I wouldn't want him to overshadow the band - who really pulled off the sound and look like no one else could. If you listen to the song "Sexy Eiffel Towers," I dare you to come away unimpressed with Gorman's bass skill. The recording isn't the greatest at capturing it, but if you listen carefully his bass is doing some incredible things.
Gorman is an amazing bassist, completely underrated. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting. It really is appreciated - and I hope you enjoyed it - I loved making it and spending so much time re-listening to so much Bow Wow Wow. Thx again. Best, PWG

Great video. I had two crushes growing up , Beki Bondage of Vice Squad and Annabelle. I definitely didn't know all these details about Bow Wow Wow, I was much more into Punk and Hardcore Punk ( still am) and I never listened to radio. Still don't ! Punk till death. Liked & subbed
Thanks! I am really glad you liked it. I'm figuring out a band for my next video, which might be an underground punk band of the era. Not sure yet. Thx again for the kind words and taking the tiime to watch and comment. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimm just a few thoughts, if you're wanting to stay with a female fronted band video, what about The Avengers from SF, or The Bags from LA. Maybe eve. VIce Squad ? , or other suggestions, Stiff Little Fingers, Undertones, The Boys, Teenage Head. Just some ideas. Have a great one, stay safe.
Thanks for this. It's really well done! I thought it was the Mandela Effect, because I remember hearing about a band called 'Adam and the Ants' when I was a kid. But it was just 'Adam Ant,' Now I know both were true. Also, getting rid of your famous singer (twice) is a bold strategy in the music industry. Cheers!

Now there be plenty of bands with the African Highlife guitar influences. Back then, not so much. So many sounds incorporated in they music along with punk. ...Kind of like today's Santigold...
Absolutely. And I think the drums were massively influential on punk for decades. Even now. Thanks for watching and taking the time to give your thoughts. It means much to me. Best, PWG
at 05:50 who is that on the rather tiny double bass? Or is it just a made-up painting? Can't tell if it's a painting or fuzzy photo, or a bit of both. My first thought when I noticed the bass was Nigel Lewis (Clapham Elevators, Meteors, Tall Boys). But, hard to tell. And am sure Nigel played a full-sized vintage one, and not that cello-sized one.
Hey thanks so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. That picture at 5:50 is an AI-generation with guiidance from me using a software called Fotor. It's not of anyone in particular but I see what you mean. You can see more about the AI in footnote 13 in the end credits. Some people don't like the AI pics I generated for this, but I think they look kind of surreal and funky, and fill in some empty spaces with interesting visuals. Anyways, thanks again. Best, PWG
Thanks for watching and commenting. It's interesting that they are considered a one-hit wonder, because after researching this doco, I've learned how much bigger they were in the UK, and just broke in the US really with I Want Candy. Brilliant catalog of music, really worthy of modern exploration. Thx again for watching. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimm Thank you for the documentary, it brought back many memories, especially the links to other acts, (Adam and the ants / boy george). The 80's were a great time to grow up, musically. Almost every week there seemed to be a new act on 'Top of the pops' (main UK music show, at the time) and I guess, (certainly from Malcolm's point of view and managers like him), it was a case of throwing out enough acts and hoping one or two of them would stick. "Go wild in the country" was big in the UK, but really that was it. I'd forgotten about "I want candy", but it was a smaller ripple. There was more consternation around the first album's cover art.
(Commenting at the start so maybe it is mentioned.) I remember Bow Wow Wow at school and they were good. But, then a rumour went around that the original lyrics to ‘Go wild in the country’ were changed from ‘The s*x in the grass’ to ‘The snakes in the grass’ to make it radio-friendly! Then suddenly they went from being merely ‘good’ to dangerous Punk outsiders, and that became the anthem of the year! When I hear this song, I still don’t hear the word ‘snakes’, and it feels like being a ginger-haired bag of raging hormones on the school bus again. It would however be another seven years before I so much as kissed a girl! 🤫🇬🇧
Ha-ha, that's a great story! I just listened to it now and I hear snakes, but that's only because I've never heard that story before. In any event, Bow Wow Wow was replete with double entrendes, so I bet it was meant to sound that way. Great fun. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed it! I really appreciate your comment and story. Best, PWG
That's crazy they opened for Pretenders and Queen, Police and Madness I can see. They really were that good though. I thought they were ok back in the 80s but now I love them, nobody else sounds like them except Adam and the Ants, in a way but not really. I loved the Ants from day one. 46:18 She looks so upset here, has she ever come to realize how unforgettable they are? Nobody could replace her, they tried but no! I hope that told her how awesome she is, the people who matter know, screw the rest. I don't care what the band's problems were, that was beyond the pale kicking her out like that! She didn't do anything wrong and they treated her like garbage. Her voice is what made them unforgettable. They could've handled it like adults at least and talked about it with her.
Yes, it was an out of control scene for sure. Annabella had it tough and she really handled it with dignity and grace. And what an amazing sound and look. Classic! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I am grateful for your time and I hope you enjoyed watching it. Best, PWG
This is the first time I've seen a documentary where Malcom is praised more than put down, mainly because all the other docs have been about his relationship with the Pixtols or other broken things.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to watch and share your perspective. Malcolm is definitely a divisive figure, but I did my best to tell the story the best I could as I saw it, and in this context, the context of Bow Wow Wow, this is how I saw him. I think it's funny when Annabella is talking about Malcolm while she is still in Bow Wow Wow and she refers to him as "this odd manager." True words! Thanks again for watching. Best, PWG
Bow Wow Wow was a fantastic band, underrated and I think could have made some more great albums if punk chaos didn't intervene. Thanks for watching my video and commenting - it means a lot to me! Best, PWG

The first time I've ever heard the musicians talk. I actually thought they would talk very posh for some reason. They deffo knew how to play though. I'm still getting over them talking kind of normal 😂❤
Hi there - thx for commenting! I address that issue in the third section of the doco (called Mutiny) in some detail. If you haven't watched, I hope you do. Thanks again for commenting. I do appreciate it and hope you give the doco a chance. Best, PWG
Best, PWG

@@suek9456 she was pre-Madonna cool, I get it!
Finally a documentary about one of the most fascinating bands to come out of the 80’s.
Great band! Thanks for watching and commenting. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimm "...the oppression of Thatcher, the plastic promises of Reagan."
Yawn, Snore.
@@fastinbulvis2223 Single mother with EIGHT kids???...Sounds like she should have been the subject of a Bow Wow Wow song

Really have to give her mom credit, she made sure that Annabella wasn't just a manipulated airhead, she comes across as well-spoken, educated, and intelligent.

60yrs old now but still in love with Bow Wow Wow. The 80s what a wonderful time for music
@@Lupinotuum66 true that
For me what set Bow Wow Wow apart was the happy, carefree attitude of its sound. It did not seem to have the same negativity and nihilism of the other punk bands of the time (which I also like but for different reasons). The sound was such a vibrant blend of rockabilly, Bo Diddly, fantastic rhythms, and light-hearted pop. Nothing like it.
I agree! Couldn't have said it better myself. Thx so much for watching and taking the time to comment. It means a lot.

@@PWilliamGrimm I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary. Thank YOU for posting.
Absolutely fantastic BWW doc. Thank you, PWG!
Anyway, my discovery of that song sent me down the Bow Wow Wow rabbithole and, all of a sudden, there's your video :D
Funny thing you mention RHCP - they even name dropped Bow Wow Wow in one of their songs (it might have been "Suck My Kiss" if I remember correctly)! And yeah, Frusciante definitely might be up for it. As for Dave - I've heard he simply doesn't want to leave London and Leigh lives in LA, so... it might be problematic for that reason alone.

Thx again. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimm - Oh thank you so much. I didn't expect that at all, ha ha! Appreciated! 🙂
Fantastic documentary telling the story of a fabulous band
Hey, thanks for watching nd commenting with such kind words. It really was a fabulous band. Thanks again.
Best, PWG
Great doco. This is what "fair use" is all about.
Hi there: Thanks so much for your kind words. I do agree that "fair use" gives us a great opportunity to learn and enjoy our world a bit more freely. Thanks again for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it! Best, PWG
Great documentary you made! Thank you.
Wow, those are some very kind words, thanks so much! It was great to make a doco on such a cool band. I'm really happy you enjoyed it. Best, PWG
Great work! They were a band I appreciated more as time passed. First album is a beautifully produced masterpiece. The instrumental track, Ourang -Outang, is amazing!
I love Ourang-Outang. Simply brilliant. The first record is near perfect and I love the second one, too. Thanks so much for the kind words, and for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
I saw them open for The POlice on the Ghost In The Machine tour. It was Adam Ant's backing band with a girl up front. Nothing more nothing less.
That must have been a cool show. I didn't see the Police until Synchronicty. The venue was too big and I was too young to understand it fully, I think. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it a lot. Best, PWG
I met the band ( but not Annabelle) at the old Beehive pub in Edgware around 1982-84. They were regulars in there back in the day. 😊
Cool! They seem like they are pretty cool guys. Annabella was probably locked up with her chaperone! Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope you enjoyed it. Best, PWG
This was a Great doc!!
Thanks very much for the kind words and taking the time to watch and comment. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
Great, great work on an massively underrated band and singer.
I must admit, I didn't love the AI-generated scenes; they confused me.
Best, PWG
Great, underrated band with a great sound. RIP, Matthew.
Really underrated band - but it's never too late to rate highly. Matthew was amazing. Thx for watching and I am glad you enjoyed and commented. Best, PWG
Thanks for the very interesting film!
Thanks very much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
really nice documentary, thank you very much
Plenty of intelligent piercing observations from the main players, that's a good start.
Very strange how Yewtree skipped over him when he's surely as bad as Saville which may explain why McLarens son burned all his dads memorabilia inc some Chicken magazine which may well have refocused Yewtree upon the labour party what with PIE and Minipops Channel Four promoting McLaren there in early-mid 80s.
very decent documentary! I live very close to West Hampstead where Annabelle worked in the dry cleaners where she was discovered .
Thanks a lot for watching and sharing your comment! I am glad you enjoyed, I am very grateful. Best, PWG
Anyone else see them at The Ritz in NYC at the height of their popularity ? I did and got her autograph before the show !
Best, PWG
Great work here, thank you and God bless 🙏 First Adam and the Ants album is 9/10
Thanks very much for the kind words.
Agreed !
Thanks for your perspective - it was a crazy time. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
He was an endlessly fascinating man,the book about him by Paul Gorman is one of the best biographies I`ve ever read.
How many penneth
in a pound?
Best, PWG
Thanks for making this :)
How about a doc on Gary Myrick? Also underrated - - but still going
Cool. This band was in a lot of post-punk fans' record collections.
Best, PWG
My first music collection was C60 and C90 mixtapes from the radio hahaha. I did buy everything afterwards though.
Me too - we all did I think- thx for watching and commenting and I hope you enjoyed ! PWG
Mcclaren 😅. Simply used everyone he could for his own purposes.
I think that's true in a lot of ways. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. It really means the world too me.
Thanks for watching and sharing your perspective. That was a tough part of the story to write. Thx again! Best, PWG
This was great.
Hey thanks so much. I'm super glad you enjoyed it. Great band and it was a lot of fun to make - I learned a lot! Thx again for watching and commenting. Best, PWG
I give this band 5 bags of popcorn.
A delicious rating. Thx for watching and commenting. I do very much appreciate it,. Best, PWG
I saw them in 1981 in Canada they were fantastic!
I'm sure they were! They could really rock live. Thx for watching and commenting. It means a lot. Best, PWG
Saw them in 81. They were excellent
I am very jealous! They were great live! Thanks a lot, seriously, for watching and taking the time to comment. I read them all and it's really nice to see people's reactions. I hope you enjoyed it. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimm I did. I remember some of the controversies at the time Thought it was pretty accrate
Thanks again for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Best, PWG
Thx again. Best, PWG
@@PWilliamGrimm I did like it -- thank you for all the work! The subject of McLaren's provocations around age is a thorny one to navigate.
Excellent documentary

Fantastic work, bravo.
Hey, thanks a lot. Bow Wow Wow was a great band and it was a pleasure to work up a doco on them. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
Have a great one, stay safe.
thx - it's a hard choice!
Cheers!
Hey thanks so much for watching and the kind words. I'm glad I cleared up the Mandela Effect! I hate when that happens. Thx again! Best, PWG

Priviliged to have seen them. West Runton Pavillion - anyone else there too?
Not me, but jealous you had the opportunity. Thanks for commenting! Best, PWG
Best, PWG
Interesting to see the back story and how much work went in to esentially a 'one hit wonder'.
Warhol was a challenging artist? Hilarious.
(Commenting at the start so maybe it is mentioned.)
I remember Bow Wow Wow at school and they were good.
Best, PWG
Expecting Matthew Ashman to have handled anything 'like an adult' was probably asking a little too much!
Best, PWG
57 here. Thanks for lots of great memories!
Loved them! Wanted more - never got it! Hard to believe she was only 13 at the time!

The sexy British tennis pro Emma Raducanu always reminds me of Anabella.
These are the guys who screwed their best friend Adam Ant over.
