"Compared to What" was written by Gene McDaniels (who also wrote Roberta Flack's hit "Feel Like Makin' Love") in 1966, which makes the lyrics all that more remarkable for their time. It was first recorded that same year by jazz pianist Les McCann as a short album track. In 1969, Roberta Flack recorded a sizzling version for her debut LP "First Take", which was also released as her first single. Les McCann happened to be her manager at the time.
The version here, with saxophonist Eddie Harris, was from an impromptu performance at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival, which coincidentally occurred within days of the release of Flack's "First Take". Much of that performance was released a few months later as "Swiss Movement", which remains one of the greatest soul/jazz recordings of all time. It was also very successful, reaching the top of the jazz and R&B charts, and very high on the overall LP charts as well.
The song itself has been covered by close to 300 artists. Brian Auger's Oblivion Express released a highly lauded version on their 1973 album "Closer To It", which I place in my personal top three along with McCann/Harris and Flack.

I am also of that era and the entire concert is great, trivia, during Benny’s solo, Ella Fitzgerald walks into the venue and the crowd applauds in recognition.
‘Cold Duck Time” “Generation Gap” “You Got it in your Soulness” are additional great tracks from this performance
I also highly recommend a listen to Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express - “Happiness is Just Around the Bend” is a cool, soulful dance groove
Also Brian’s covers of “Compared to What” and “Inner City Blues” and “Freedom Jazz Dance” are fire
Brian plays a Hammond B3 and is from Britain, played with Jimmy Hendrix!

Oh yeah! This was my jam back in the day! The "Swiss Movement" album is this group (collaboration really) performing live at the Montreux Jazz Festival. A lot of fusion was going on with jazz back in that time (Miles!). This was one of the early entrants in the jazz/soul/r&b fusion genre. The groove is contagious and the song is relevant even today. Thanks for the reaction SAD! Well done.

Young folks out there might be interested to know that it was the first time Les McCann had ever smoked a joint. He took just a hit back Stage and said he was completely lost then he ‘got it together’ and the whole groove, the song took off!! You can see Eddie Harris is high …naturally, musically and any other wise!! Jazz is my bag!!

I heard this on WRVR then ran down to the record store to snatched it up.
This is probably the best example of Soul Jazz ever. Eddie Harris was one of the first play to employ electronics with his sax.
Iconic music recorded at the Montreau Jazz Festival. A big hit on jukeboxes but sadly never got much public exposure.

The great Les Macanese on Keys, Eddie on Sax.
Les wrote and arranged this piece. There is so much to explore in jazz. Two of my favorites were released the year I was born 1959 Miles Davis great album Kind of Blue with “So
What” and Dave Brubeck “Time Out “ album with Take Five.

Great reaction! This form of jazz is known as "jazz soul", a fusion of jazz and soul. I first heard this song on the "Atlantic Jazz: Soul" compilation album (a compilation of Jazz/Soul tunes by groups that worked under the Atlantic label, which is probably my favorite compilation album of all time). Then later I got the Swiss Movement album, which is the original Les McCann / Eddie Harris album that contains this song (in fact, this very performance), as well as the other songs they performed on that day.

I'd heard these guys before but never seen them. So glad it did. They were great (The dogs bollocks, chaz, lol). Everything works so well, piano setting the grove. Everyone of the brass solo's was terrific. The vocals were perfect for this music. AS Sifa said. you could a couple of Motown bits. At times I heard bits of Grand/Petite Wazoo, years before trendsetter Frank did it, lol. Always thought jazz musicians from this era, generally, were superior to most others, this sort of confirms it.
Great reaction Dan and Sifa. Great selection Chuck, loved this.

Jazz became free from commercial pressure as early as late 40's/1950 as the bebop revolution changed jazz forever -and commercial swing was basically dead. Bird, Dizzy, Monk, Kenny Clarke changed the language of modern music. And it happened right in New York City! Minton's playhouse is still there!
