Mom and Pop shops are the best. Portsmouth Drum Center in NH is definitely the leader of the pack. If anyone is reading this, I will tell you it's the Mecca of drum land. You will not be disappointed. Great staff, knowledgeable and friendly.

Not really. I looked at old magazine ads for drum kits from the 1960s and they were $150 and up. Adjusted for inflation, that is $1500 and up. You can buy Yamaha Stage for 1/2 that now. So arguably they are cheaper now than ever. Also, $2000-$3000 price range drums now are better than the very best from two decades ago - and adjusted for inflation those would be more like $6,000.

Here are a couple of tips that I gathered over the last decade or so :
    - 1 : If you are a good customer at a local drumshop and they waive your taxes (for example) out of the blue, they're likely to do this almost every time you shop there if you're a working drummer. I walk in and get an almost guaranteed -15% on anything, which is pretty sweet! They'd rather have returning customers buying something specific (i.e. a clamp, attachment, rim, head, etc) rather than one-time buyers that'll get a kit and never come back. They also know you'll make bigger purchases down the road if you trust them.
    - 2 : The used market for drum kits is amazing. Why is that?? They take space, and requires treated rooms if you want to play them. This means there is a *lot* of near-mint condition kits for a fraction of the brand new price out there, whether showroom or not. This is how many drumshops like Drumazon, Hawthorne or the used section at Portsmouth for example, make their money on used gear : they get those deals, restore or simply clean the kits and sell them for 3-4 times the asked price on Craiglist or the like.
    - 3 : If you really wanna push it far, keep an eye for drumshops in small towns where the music scene is almost inexistent. They can keep higher end kits as showroom for quite a few years and will do *anything* to get rid of them. I can get my dream set 50% of the brand new price with 800 bucks of hardware thrown in there if I'm willing to drive a few hours - worth it to me!
    - 4 : Look at clinics and tours. If the clinician happen to have played on tour a set of drums you're interested in, chances are they will get sold at the end of the tour.
    - 5 : Look for kits that have a high resale value. A great buying to performance value is always awesome, but if you can resale the kit for more than you paid for easily as an individual (rather than a drumshop needing to clean their showroom floor quickly for new models, hence the discounts!), then you *really* have the best deal. To continue my example, I can resell this dream kit alone for twice the money I paid for it AND the hardware, but just the kit,on Reverb and I bet you solid money it'll be gone within the month, as it is also a very desirable and discontinued finish.

I shop online exclusively. Had wayyy too many experiences in retail music stores or drum shops with people who really had no idea what they were talking about. Didn't know the difference between die cast hoops and triple flanged. Didn't know which lines were budget and which were premium. Said X company doesn't offer x size or model when they actually did... just so many things like that, and if it wasn't that, and they actually knew something, too many times they turned out to be a total tool in the personality dept. I finally gave up on retail.

That's how I snagged a Yamaha Absolute Maple Hybrid 10, 12, 16, 22 with the matching snare in soft cases. They wanted it gone, looked in one case to take a pic of the badge then put it up for $450, once I got there I started being honest with them on the price. And for being honest they kept the same price and threw in a full set of Yamaha hardware for an extra $200 in a rolling bag that they haven't posted yet. I found that deal by the way the drums were stored (stacked in the corner of a finished basement) and how the description was worded, plus I jumped on it immediately and was up front with them.

Being patient customer might not work here in my country lol. Stuffs here are usually sold at the retail price. Outdated stuffs might have a veryyyyyyyy small discount, like 5%. If there are a large discount slap on it, there might be something bad to those instruments (I've seen Warwick bass sells at 50%, with the condition that the neck is badly twisted. It's even called "งอหงิก" (twisties) on the price tag.)
I happened to get my bass at 30% discount once because it's 10 years old and the store was relocating.
As far as I know the dealer/distributors only order stuffs once there's demand on it. They don't get the new stuffs at launch, because they are all shipped to the US. They only get a small number of stuff to test the water first.
I remember talking with my friend who's working with the store once and he mentioned that the Waza Air I was interested was already sold-out to the local artists here even before the shipment arrive.

I bought a pearl drum set and it was cheaper than the color I really wanted, because our guitarist said to buy and we could make it any color I wanted!😮 I said how’s that, well when your family owns they’re own carpet and tile store you can get any color of material just measure out each drum and get a sheet of it for a low price, then clean the service of the wood and make sure the over-lap goes where the hardware goes. Make sure the glu is spread thin over each drum(one drum at a time) the after it dries drill out(through the holes already in the drum) the material using same size drill bits

Sorry to hear you have to go through this. I’ve come to appreciate a few of the small name music shops in my area, just seeing how kind they are to everyone. I wish commission would be the best solution but I think that would lead to some aggressive selling (probably would turn away some buyers). But I do think there should be some sort of feedback system they implement. If Simone has a bad experience, it gets sent to upper management (or someone who cares to fix the situation). Definitely a mess though

That dtx 3 kit. I bought the identical same kit, in like 14 maybe? for $300 used. Today? If it's got midi outs, I'd consider buying it for maybe $150 maaaaaaybe. I can't remember if the pads and cymbals were dual zone or not. If so they'd be ok back ups for my sd3 set up, where internal sounds don't matter. The PDP kit, you guys thought an asking price of $2,000 was too high? That's what I'd have asked, and took the first 1750 I could get. I don't know if y'all said either way. I was thinking 2k was a good deal, $1500 would be a remarkably good deal, and $1100 is a number where I'd offer them $900 be there in an hour type deal, because they're desperate.

I am new to drumming. I recently got a double sided Evan's Real Feel practice pad a Vic Firth A5 sticks. I have been eyeing the Simmons SDS9 from the 80s. I have been using drum machines for a couple of years. The 80s is my favorite musical decade. I have some drum machines and synths from the 80s. Here is what I am looking for in E dums. Does it sound like 80s E drums? Is it an analog drum synth? Does it have DIN MIDI in so I can trigger it with my hardware sequencer? Does it have DIN MIDI out so I can trigger other things with it? Does it have cool looking drum pads? The SDS9 checks off all those boxes. I have some Behringer clones. So I would be fine with modern E drums if they check all the boxes. But I am unaware of any modern E drums that check all those boxes. As far as I know there are modern drum brains with Simmons style sounds. But I want an actual tweakable drum synth rather than just samples.
If anyone knows of any modern E drums that check all those boxes, let me know.
So I think vintage E drums are fine if you know what you are getting in to. Thankfully there are plenty of UA-cam videos showing vintage E drums. There is the Simmons Museum website with all sorts of info on vintage Simmons drums. So the info is out there to help you decide if vintage E drums are right for you.

Lots of buying and selling, some loses, some bargins.
The best piece advice to people who have are on a budget or even those who are collectors, is don't be afraid on buying used gear.
I know it's obvious and to the point, but I've managed to find essentials and bargin drum deals for craigslist, facebook marketplace, online retailers, etc. and some of which I've even sold for profit to get my money back.

I've purchased gear from probably 100 different vendors/outlets over half a century until Sweetwater became so financially grounded. Nobody mentions "Buying Power". What I refer to is, smaller shops can't extend credit like a bigger store. Example, Musician friends uses Syncrony Bank for financing, who requires near AAA credit ranking. My 670 score denied, so Sweetwater offers better pricing with 2 year no question warranty, and in house "zero" interest financing. Musician friends lost my business, I deleted my account, Sweetwater picked up $11,000 single year sales from a frequent flyer now. Their monthly giveaways from customers submitting photo of their new gear is insane. I'm talking like $10K in digital recording and mic gear for drums, or full Sound board for your band with amps, monitors, P-A's, Cables, stands, etc. Mom and pops just can't afford this type of promo customer grab, so they need a niche. DCOP is only shop I know who actively attempts to compete with Sweetwater. Buying online by sound of video demos is about as reliable as green on roulette wheel. You can't return gear to mom and pop after 30 days. Vs Sweetwater 2 years!
