Just got this amp and its actually amazing. Had blackstars for years.
Well done Henning, lengthy and honest, the controverse was well explained.❤
Thanks for another effin awesome & useful review! Love your playing too.
They are pretty cool amps! I did some videos on the 50 and 100 watt versions. There's fun to be had. Great video!
I thoroughly enjoyed this thoughtful review
My first tube amp since my very first one back in the 80s (a Fender Twin Deluxe I found in my grandparent's garage) is the Blackstar HT Studio 20... have had it for 10 or so years and still love and use it all the time! Great video Henning... I rehearse with it in a band with live drums.. plenty loud! You ROCK!!! 😎🤘🎸🐦
Always love your honest opinions, and as you say, its a good and very versatile amp. Personally I like Cab Rig due to its simplicity and ease of use otherwise I get option paralysis. 😊
I come to your reviews just for entertainment alone!! Great review!
Thank You for putting out excellent content. Been watching Your Content from the beginning. I must say You are a scholar and professional Artist, with immense talent and honest content even when it’s sponsored. You tell it like it is, and that goes along Way. I’ve been trying to buy Your Harley Benton in pale light blue Pelham , whatever they call it. The SC550 I believe is the Model. And if Your ever throwing away great tube amps like this Blackstar Ht 20. I owned the HT1 Metal Head and Loved it. Thank You!
Nice review. I'm more than a little tempted.
Its so what I don´t lile about Henning! He always tells the truth! 🙂 I have watched a few videos of this amp now and Henning is the only one who points out the less than desirable "features" of the amp! Thank you Henning!
Great performance by the band ❤
Great and honest review as usual, pricing might make it a tough buy, agreed
The PI tube is probably EYTSCH42. It is very rare vintage heptode tube.
Amazing the amp was bigger than the box! 😮😮
Got an blacktar id3 30/50 w or something, sounded so boxy, that it stands long away with the rest
of the retired 12 combos.
Henning?? Did your doggos approve of this??
OMG I need that volume knob shaped hat you've got lying on the table in the background! I wanna go to 11 :D

I wish they sold Heritage guitars in my neck of the woods . I realy want a custom core H150 to go with My Gibson and Epi Les Pauls .
Going to to get an Eastman SB59V in the very near future . The distributor my local music store uses carries Eastmans so they can order one for me but sadly their distributor doesn't carry Heritage . I hope Heritage grows and expands into new markets and gets wider distribution .
That Heritage sounds wonderful.
Great song
Hey. Power tubes in a 20Watt amp matter! 6v6 vs el84 have a very different tone and feel. Love you!
Hey man, first off great vid. It sounds good. I always feel a little more sane with your vids bc you have a little noise in your signal and I can't get rid of mine either. It's something with the wiring or my power.
That being said, re the Blackstar stuff: Loved Black Star until I learned that the low price tag also means skimping on things like a robust board and components. We all learn at some point.
My ht20 sounded amazing, but the copper traces on the board kept pulling up. I won't rely on one again and any tube amp I buy I make sure it's not gonna be a pain to service. I'm curious if any of that has changed with this new HT line.
doubt it. I would be willing to bet this is the same thing as the MKII but with a reskin and then adding all the digital cab rig stuff they have been adding to all their products. All the other controls are exactly the same as the MKII, from pics I seen online seems to be the exact same blackstar 50 watt speaker etc.
@@DKprojects9 it's too bad, if it meant another 100 or 150 to have a more robust board and components, I'd pay it because I love the way they sound.
I got into blackstar years ago simply because of their low prices. Seemed like a really good bang for your buck brand. Within like the last 3 years or so they have raised their prices 40% or more on some of their products which took away the whole original appeal to the brand for me. If I'm gonna pay premium prices I'm probably gonna shop around other brands now... There is still appeal to their amps but I think they are over valuing their brand.
I agree. They seem to lose quite a a bit of value though so used prices are pretty decent.
I bought an HT5 MK2 a few months back and I Paid 850 dollars Canadian after taxes so I would hardly call it a budget amp . That's alot of money for A 5 watt head . Blackstar is getting into Marshall pricing .
The HT 5 is also produced in Asia which had a cheaper labor market. In terms of quality and sound I really don't care where an amp is made as long as it sounds right and is reliable It's all good but when an amp is produced in Asia or Indiaexpect the price to be lower as the labor Costs are lower but it seems those cost saving measures are no longer passed on to the consumer .
A 5 watt head built in Asia Should not cost 850 dollars no matter how good it is.
Now don't get me wrong the HT5 like other Blackstars sounds great and I do enjoy my HT5 but price wise it was hardly a steal.
@@adamwatson6916 That's a lot for a MK2. They're only £300 here.
The MK3 are very expensive especially compared to the MK2 and they're not worth the extra.
This is why I love this guy reviews, when he talk about the price he is hitting the nail in the head, is this expensive? For me yes, you can get a 20 watt head from Marshall for 422€ so….
I want to see someone review the iPhone GarageBand amp models. Since like, half the population has them literally in their pocket, it'd be interesting to see what can be done with them.
Have you ever flatlined the amp to use the pedals?
I've been a long time fan of the Mk1 and Mk2 HT5 and HT20 and I've been waiting and hoping for them to release a HT20 with the Cabrig stuff because so many of my favourite amps are EL84, I love the sound of the old one and I just wanted the cabrig stuff added to it like they did in their other updated amps. The price wouldn't even bother me if I liked it. My problem is in the videos I'm watching it doesn't sound like the HT20 I love. What it sounds like I'm hearing in all the videos I've watched so far is dry bleed mixed with the signal. All the sounds being pushed with a pedal are fine but the guitar direct in, it always sounds like I'm hearing dry bleed in the signal, so I guess it makes sense that the pedal pushed sounds are not so terrible because I'm not hearing the dry guitar in the signal anymore. Sure it gives it has a spanky cutting tone but I don't like it. IDK maybe I just need to try it in person but that's multiple videos now where I think I'm hearing the same thing.
This or a simple Boss Katana? Nice review Henning
I'm a tube amp guy and I love my Katana. The fact you can fine tune it so much in the Boss Tone Studio like I do when I record is fantastic.
Is it a fair doubt between this HT20 MK III and the Fender Bassbreaker 30R? Both good cleans.... Both good drive as well... Thoughts everybody?
That song.....bro.......fantastic!!!! Gave me the feels!
I have the previous generation of HT-5R and whilst I'm more than happy with tone and specs, having all of those connections underneath is a massive pain in the arse. The same goes for those basic controls, which are sunk too far down and lay flat which makes it awkward when used sitting down. For 5 watt practice amp (especially with it's 0.5 watt switch), it is unforgiveable that it is not easy to use from the sofa.
You're ti say that the combo is actually exactly the same layout as the head unit but rotated 90 degrees and with a speaker bunged in. That layout of controls and sockets makes perfect sense for a head unit - and none for a combo. What they seem to have done is to put the speaker partially in front of the amp - making the whole cabinet smaller but making it impossible to place controls at the front. They really should have designed a dedicated combo rather than bodging a head into too small a case. (These Blackstars are huge sellers - someone could make a fortune out of designing and selling a larger housing for them - or just selling a head case - no, I'm not talking about you ;) )
C grid is such a beautiful studio.
Totally :)
o_0 what interface doesn't have an input level control?
they say 3st time is a charm!
Does anyone find that a lot of the Blackstar Amps, all seem very thin with lots of upper mids and highs? Even perhaps harsh sounding? I have tried a few in a music store and never really wanted to go further. Many reviews and demos on UA-cam seem to sound like that too.
All of these HT amps from Blackstar are basically their old HT pedals with a power transformer, and most of their tone comes from a hybrid solid state pre-amp. They are not all-tube amps. I had a HT-5 MKII and felt the same as you. Sold it long ago and never went back.
@@rodrigoscandelari Sure the old HT amps might have been a transformation from their pedals, but the MKII was already tonally different from the MKI and we are at MKIII now. Most of the tone of amps comes from the tonestack in the pre-amp and adding in a diode there is nothing new. It had been done by Marshall and many famous amp modders way before Blackstar ever existed, yet somehow Blackstar get's hate for it. If you have a JCM800 and you put a SD-1 or any common drive pedal in front you are pretty much doing the same thing anyways.
❤❤❤;😊😊😊🎉,your music.
Hey, where can I listen to / buy that song "locked in"?
Not out yet
I don't get the top controls thing with all of their newer combos. Their older combos had front controls and rear outputs. That worked. This is dumb. The price doesn't make sense either, especially with a Blackstar branded speaker. Those HT cleans though... that's what I love about mine.
Locked In is a really good song, and Rafa has some great pipes! As for the amp... I've owned the MKI of the same amp. It was good, but I wasn't good at the time, and I didn't get the most out of it. I more or less exchanged it for the HT-5 MKII, and I found that amp really boring, even though it was loud for a 5W amp. I'm not sure the HT-20 MKIII is the amp for me, but it doesn't hurt to try it. I had the Blackstar Artist 15, but I didn't like the sound of overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedals through it, regardless of settings, and that's an important part of my playing. I guess what I really need is a rig consisting of a Marshall for the distorted sounds and a Fender DeVille or something for the clean and crunch sounds. But if HT-20 does cleans AND my dirt pedals really well, it will be more practical than two amps.
Honestly, the Stage 100 seems like the more logical choice. That paired with a great cab is everything I could possibly need.
What band was that? Couldnt search for it
@@JAF2991 The band is Campaign Like Clockwork and the song's name is Locked In.
Henning recently did a video about how to record guitar and this song was the one he worked with (the video is called Deconstructed riffs part 1/3). The singer is Rafael Cano, who has the UA-cam channel Let's Talk Song. They did the course "Almost but not quite complete guide to songwriting" together.
@@JAF2991 The song doesn't seem to be released on any streaming services, and not even on Bandcamp. But they've played it live in Henning's studio, along with some other songs.
It's the first song in this video:

Thanks so much, man. And I appreciate the quick reply.
Awesome song, I was just having a hard time finding it because of Eystch's accent lol
@@JAF2991 Yeah, I get that 😂 and no problem, I see this as a community, so we have each other's backs like this, helping out with such small things.
What is that dual mic stand??
Triad orbit
Personally , I think the market / real world is not into 100 watt heads and dragging extra cabs around to pub club bar gigs anymore . A 20 watt valve combo will suffice for most normal gigs , festivals / large event stages usually offer backline or will mic your amp up , I had the 20 watt Blackstar studio head and an old light weight ( well I was younger then ) marsall 4x12 , and was nothing it couldn’t do . GAS ensued and I traded it in for 50 club head , hardly ever use the more powerful head now , an Orange Terror Stomp is all I need and Katana 100 as spare . I think the price is high for a Blackstar Combo , should be nearer 5/600 £ then they would fly off the shelves but Blackstar isn’t Marshall or Fender or Freedman etc , fantastic amps but not over / near a grand fantastic 😊👍
Need a room mic for us to hear 2 watt mode so we can hear your string noise
So... I actually like the sounds coming out of that thing, especially the clean channel. What I don't like is that everything is full of Blackstar HT MKIII videos right now. Not only my favorite YT channels, no no. I wlaked out the door an hour ago and nearly stepped on a vid about those amps. Went to the doctors' get called in to get checked up. Guess what's waiting: correct, a Blackstar video.
I also don't like the price. That thing should not be more than 550 Euros.
A very strange black star cat at the end.
Honestly, not only is it annoying to plug things into the back of the amp like that, now you can potentially put it right against a wall. That's a tube amp where you can potentially cut off all ventilation by accident.
That's a fire hazard by design.
I guess you could never make it sound like a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe IV.
No
I enjoy the waffle AND the sound tests.
😂
The whiny "get to the sound" kids need to learn to be quieter.
I don't want to move the virtual mics, I want Justin York to do that and for me to just pick my favorite mix from someone who's a proper engineer. Not being able to load IRs is just so stupid and makes all the Blackstar products a complete non-starter for me.
We're all different, I prefer the Cab Sim software to IR's.. we're all correct for ourselves though, so at the end of the day it's all good.. :)
@@MuckingAboutWithMyHeadrush yeah that's fine but Blackstar doesn't give the option for what amounts to basically the only transferable standard in digital guitar world.
So you're happy, I'm not ;)
It's a great amp but way too expensive. The entire HT Mk III range is ridiculously priced. Nice video though, thanks!
Good review Henning. This amp gets a big NO from me :)
Please, ask the cow.
Not worth double the cost of the Mk2.
Hey man, I know you're in the business for so long however if you want to hear a tonestack, you need to crank it. You know there's this misconception that when you set the tonestack to noon (12 o'clock) it becomes a flat response thing? Nope. It is not. It is not its neutral position. It's just "halfway there" position. Therefore, if you want to really hear the tonestack and the ISF function, please crank some treble fearlessly. The biggest player in every tonestack is the treble knob. Everything else is shifted based on the treble position. So, please please please youtube review people, use your tonestack. Just take a look how a plexi set. You keep bass almost zero, mids very high, treble all the way up. Is it because plexi is too dark of an amp? Nope, it's irrelevant. Take a look at mesa mark series. You keep bass at zero, mid at almost zero, and you dial your treble as you're dialing your gain. So, to hear ISF, please turn those knobs above noon. I wonder what happens if all youtubers set the tonestack of a mesa mark series amps to noon :D They would probably give it a bad review.
Why these amp makers are lazy and cut corners not giving the same control from clean channel to distorted channel. It’s only a 2 channel amp it’s not that hard. 🤦🏻♂️ The last HT series had it. I’m finding they cut corners on the combos. ISF has always been a joke. It has never been more than a basic tone knob. Definitely not British to American amp tone…. Blackstar make some great amps. I love my studio 10 6L6. I’d have to hear this one. Right now I’m into my Tonemaster pro and fr12 and my PRS Archon 50. Those two I’m playing currently
Blackstar is always an "almost"
Not this ne, its a dud.
