- Ok I’m not an engineer and do not recommend doing this hack. By reading/viewing this you accept all responsibility for your actions pertaining to the content shown on any of my videos. Ryobi I could design a hillbilly proof safety for this mower for a small fee lol!
More abuse in 2021: • Ryobi abused again #ho...
Saved me from mental collapse. Thanks!
I just picked up the self propelled version of this lawn mower at the thrift store... I couldn't pass it up. 49.99 with 75% off of that. No bag, no problem. I didn't have a cotter, I used a small bolt though. Thanks a ton!!!!!! 13.00 after taxes. lol
Thank YOU!
Today I used all the recommendations and your hack.
I was able to mow the strip of grass beyond the side walk out on to the street where it will easily blow away.
I've clicked your like button with no regrets.
Thank you for your comment. I ask that people try not to put clippings in the street for two reasons. 1. Motorcycle safety they only have two wheels and reducing traction on the road can kill someone. 2. Seeds get blown into the streets also and stick to road cracks finding there way to ground to grow. It increases the amount of taxes needed to repair roads.

Wow this helped in 2024 I’ve been delaying jobs and stuff
Beautiful!! Thank you for the hack. Very good to know. And thanks for showing us what it can do without the bagger. Fantastic!
Your welcome hopefully I will cover some more tools in the future. Have a big project going and not posting any videos until it’s at least half done. Thanks so much for the feedback
Thanks for the heads up about those magnets... I never even noticed them. I just got two of these guys at a local auction for a total of $25. Of course, they didn't come with bags, and probably appeared as if they didn't work at all because of this stupid safety mechanism. If I couldn't get these guys working, I was just going to keep them for parts. Glad a saw this video. Thanks again.
Your welcome good luck
Phil Weissburg mine still going strong and pretty sure you did not watch the video from the other comment. Make sure the other safety is locked in place on the handle. Also check the indicator on the battery for the charge. Also only the back battery port is a battery port the front is only storage. 90% sure if you bought new you have operator error going on.
Phil Weissburg gremlins perhaps
@@Wiretalker awesome
I would like to thank you for your informative vids about the Ryobi mower, because of the issues you've addressed you confirmed to me the potential of the model I recently found on ebay, I got a 40v 4ah battery for it as well, it's the 16 inch model runs strong and quiet as well, no safety features I did the same tilt test on the machine today doing my first cut in major overgrowth, it was stunning to the max. I will be getting a second battery to extend my use of the mower.. I'll be hunting those blades of grass, sneak up on them before they run off ... lol .. thanks again for your work ... peace ...
I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Majority of what was mowed with a large mower here has been tackled by the Ryobi electric and it’s still going strong. The only issue I see is the over priced batteries 1/2 the cost of a new mower.
@@Wiretalker Yes it is high no doubt, all one can do is make the investment and adjust as time goes on or wait kinda dam if you do, dam if you don't. I tend to wait a bit before I take the leap. At the conclusion one gets what they disire, which is good.
I figured out it was a magnet but I was trying the find something the right diameter to fit in… and here you are saving the day with a 2¢ cotter pin. Thank you sir
Thi cotter pin surprised me originally as well.
They have a side discharge shoot you can buy to put on the back. It's something that is sold separate.
This was covered a long time ago in the comments. Part # etc all in there. Video is just about how easy it was to thwart the “safety” features. Since then almost every switch including the power disconnect key socket has failed. Not on one but two of my mowers and countless other people have also discussed. Handle switch breaks or loses good contact if you use the handle lock feature much and certainly over time with the handle just slipping here and there requiring adjustment. The pull handle you grip fails due to weather exposure. If you use the safety key much the socket will wear and a terminal will end up slipping under the socket losing contact. My most recent hack is cutting the safety wire on the handle and placing two wires on one terminal and the third on the other so all three connect when the switch is flipped. All safety’s on the handle work this way. The key must be repaired. I used new terminals and removed the faulty socket the wires pull into the covered area and can be insulated the key has exact resistance. The only safety remaining on the latest mower #3 is the magnet switch at bag frame. I use the bag now that I mow less grass. The whole reason I hacked it in the first place was to prove an electric push mower had the power to cut tall grass if not restricted. If I redesigned the mower I would make a cable work a switch at the grip handle. The locks would just be locks. The key would work exactly like water sports vehicles with a tether located on the handle and not with the battery(fire injury waiting to happen when a battery fails” I would also make a switch in the body where if a conductive liquid touched either side on one switch it shuts off and another for extreme forward or back tilt. Those switches would be molded into the cover somewhere. I mean if you were to make a safety overkill mower. Perhaps the best approach would be twist throttle like a motorcycle no pressure no power. As for that mulch plug I have a video showing how forceful installation or removal is on my mower. The video still generates a lot of traffic and comments always appreciated. There are other Ryobi related videos because I have all the 40v stuff minus tillers and pressure pump related stuff. I use it all. A last note the battery socket is starting to fail on the mower. In two years of heavy no mercy use the contacts are all failing that’s what to expect. I have had 40v batteries for almost as long as Ryobi made them. Here is the rundown 4 6ah 40v batteries 100% failure within a year, 5ah battery also failed in that time. 5 4ah batteries 2 remain. Not a good track record for batteries and no good place to recycle. Worst purchase was the 18” chainsaw chain tension failure is a safety feature since you can’t use it if it won’t stay tight. Chain also not quality. Best purchase the expand it stuff minus the original weedeating string head. The mower took all I threw at it but had I not been a dc voltage guy the darn thing would have been junk a week after I bought it. Hope that helps
Very helpful I do get tired of adding the back though
I tried it on my electric ryobi lawn mower im thinking about getting different blades to use with it and wondering can i turn mines in to a dual blade lawn mower
Do you think the one you and i have can be setup to do that
Just curious how you figured this out
I saw the magnet and the bag frame bumped the bag and it died. I tried the cotter pin and it worked.
Nice video, but if you didn't know there is a
20 IN. MOWER SIDE DISCHARGE MODEL: #AC40VSD at Home Depot or Home Depot Online for $27.97
Just be sure it fits your mower model as there are different ones
It’s almost $40 another person gave me the model # and I posted the link to the side discharge last week but thank you for the information. The more it’s shared the more ways people have to find it!
I love my ryobi lawn mowers over the years but by god do the littles things you have to do them to make them work right sometimes gets annoying. Still better than having sent my gas mower to shop get it fixed and often getting rather expensive.
Regular maintenance on any piece of power equipment can be costly, but an injury from a faulty piece of equipment can be devastating.
Just got mine. At the top setting, which is actually 4 1/2 inches, the cut is not even and clean, but after lowering it to 4in, it cut great.
I have mowed everything on the ground. It got stolen last night so guess there will need to be a new video with a new mower.
@@Wiretalker damn, sucks. So far I really like it. I'm hoping I can get it to cut better on the top setting. I have St Augustine grass...
I really think the more my old one ran the better it cut. My new one seems more finicky
Thank you!SO tired of mowing a couple of rows of grass, then I gotta shut er down and empty the bag!☹They couldn't have just made this mower with a side eject like all the OTHER mowers from the past 60+years!?If it ain't broke...Update/Review;Just mowed without the grass catcher.Grass goes everywhere;Street, sidewalk, pants(or course),shoes..Homemade grass deflector perhaps?🤔
So glad I found this. Thanks a million!!!
Very helpful, i was wondering how a plug had to be in it to turn on, thanks.
perfect for me to cut overgrown grass. It just keeps dying trying to mulch
Try the mulching attachment. Just closes it up but makes it so much easier. Never bag or get it on you
It was never a video series about proper or normal use. I was cutting 3+ ft tall overgrowth with a city push mower just to make a point that electric mowers and outdoor equipment work great if designed sturdy and durable. It’s been a while using these tools and I still like the mower but Ryobi really needs to put a safe battery reset and reconditioner feature in the charger. The batteries are expensive and just stop charging. The hacks for the battery are dangerous but sometimes work. Hope this helps with any questions on why the videos are not using available options. There is also a video I made about the mulch plug and difficult installation tricks
Very helpful I do get tired of putting something on the back
VERY IMPORTANT: if you do this, install some type of metal or hard plastic flap over the opening to deflect grass and debris from hitting you. Could really hurt yourself. (Especially if you wear FLIP FLOPS when cutting grass, which you should NEVER, ever do.) Leave enough of an opening for the debris to shoot out sideways or straight down. Not upward. Good luck.
Very old video just to show if hacked how well the mower worked on tall grass. Never meant to be a how to or safety video. I never experienced any issue but yeah definitely not smart way to do a mower. Right up there with people that disconnect safety switches on mower seats.
@@Wiretalker No offense intended, just trying to cover all safety bases.
Thanks for the video. I'm curious as to why the tilt sensor was defeated by the cotter pin. Obviously, both the cotter pin and mower attachment wires that fit into the magnetic slot are made of conductive metal. If you figured that part out, please share.
Only the back side of the slot reads the metal. I have not taken that apart but think that a magnet inside a switch closes the circuit. It was a simple idea for the tilt as the bag would slip out of the groove when the mower is tilted opening the circuit. Simple but effective.
@@Wiretalker Got it, that makes sense.
"....or does it?" I love it!!!
It had been a while so I needed a refresher course. I’m happy you commented because it let me see the video more like the viewer. Awesome Comment!
Wow. I just got 50 of these cheap mowers . I had no clue I needed a bag for it lol. I was fixing to scrap them all. Even got a aftermarket battery for them
Got 32 🤣🤣so cheap
WOW,is working! Thank 🙏 you so much...
I think you have to push in the button first then pull the safety handle before it will start
To start it under normal use you pull the handle then push the button. It will cut off if there is a tilt of more than 20 degrees under regular use also. This video of course has nothing to do with safe operation of this mower and was never intended to be a tutorial. It is for the sole purpose of showing durability under extreme misuse. This has always been the intent of my videos to treat the mower really bad and video the process. Please view my other videos because I have done far worse since this video and the mower is still working well. Really could use some subscribers and likes also. Thanks for the reply!
They do make a side throwing attachment.... Have had it available for many years...
Solved my problem! The Cult honors you.
Broke the wires for the switches on the handle when the locks came loose think they are tan, red and black. If this happens the two non black wires are safety circuits and the black ground twisting. The two wires and completing the circuit adding ground will start the mower. The mower will stop if bag is full or mower gets clogged. It will also stop if the battery is dead. Break and close the circuit after clearing or replacing battery and it will run again. Still going strong cutting 4 years of neglect on a new project yard.
Why would you not just put the mulching plug in? That goes in the hole when the bag isn't on. Edit: Nevermind, just made it to the 7 minute mark. Got it! My St Augustine will cause the mower to shut off (or clog) with the mulch plug if the grass is too tall because I miss a mow.
Exactly I was basically using it as a brush hog. Thanks for the comment Christopher!
Can I use a safety pin
They do have a side throw attachment available. 😮i bought it separately 😊
Does yours have the screws that hold the handle to the frame back out? Mine does that and I need to constantly tighten them. I’m about to epoxy them and zip tie it in. It’s a decent mower and I like it but it’s built kinda cheap.
Occasionally use blue or red loctite instead
My new Ryobi mower doesn’t start at all, we just bought it yesterday and I did all the things the instructions say and it just won’t start… ☹️☹️☹️
Make sure battery has full charge, the red key is all the way in. The battery is in slot closest to handle ie rear slot. Bag is in magnetic groove. And handle it locked in place. Hyper extending handle can break contacts be careful. Then push button while holding the swing bar in position. If it still does not work you may need to exchange it
Did you push the button in first and then hold the handle back while holding the button in
If you don't like dealing with the bag, just but the attachment that goes to the mulch outlet and blows it out to the side, why blow it in your face and breath it.
I did not have a problem with it blowing in my face. The videos are really about the hack and the abuse the mower handled while cutting aggressive growth. This video was never about proper use.
@@Wiretalker It was informative, I was just putting it out there that there is an attachment that most don't know of.
@@jamesvaldez2379 the part numbers are in comments somewhere if anyone wants to get the attachment
Why would you want grass flying at you as well as any possible rocks? Just use mulcher if you don't want to dump bag
@NickLeysyshen the hack was for cutting excessively tall grass without bogging down. A mulch plug would not work. All grass was taller than 3’ and no mower should be used as a brush hog. It was for entertainment and just because it’s kind of insane that a battery powered push mower can be hacked to cut outrageously overgrown grass! My other point I have always made is a side discharge should just come standard in the box. I have had two of these mowers and overused both only needing charged and occasionally a blade change. It’s a really tough mower!
Looks like my yard cuz my pos mower will not start
Thanks
Yw
Confused. Why not just put the mulch plug in?
Great question the design might work for an extremely manicured lawn under perfect conditions, but it rains often where I am. The grass grows 5-6” over night and the mower clogs from the volume of grass. The bag filled very quickly and I was hailing the bag to the compost. I really feel the discharge should come with the mower but it side discharges with the mild hack and that worked fine for me. If you check my mulch plug video you will see lots of comments from people that had trouble installing the mulch plug because of the amount of force needed to get it into its proper position. The plug is the worst design on any Ryobi product I have seen. I own a lot of Ryobi 40V items and like them all. The mower is tough but definitely needs improvements.
My Ryobi starts, but the blades won't spin.
Best guess either something has them stuck or the spindle bearings are bad. Option three the drive is stripped and cannot engage the blades. Do not try to free it while powered may engage and cut you instead of grass.
Hey there. My husband has lost the Battery Safety key to his Electric lawnmower.Do you have a hack to bypass it?
It’s a simple switch when it slides on it makes contact across two blades. Find a terminal to connect to each blade and a short wire between.
@@Wiretalker THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR RESPONDING.I really appreciate it..My husband says thank you as well.

Awesomeness
Piece of junk worked great the first year on a brand new lithium battery but the second and third year it bogs with the bag and you pass it over twice. Never again piece of junk went back to my gas mower and love it quick no bogging way more effective and efficient.
Mine is good but I always charge at last bar indicator and always make sure it has drained the battery to that indicator before putting it on charge. I did replace the blade this year and a dull blade may cause problems I have nothing against gas just remember to buy stabil and empty the tank and run a gas mower dry before storage pour some stabil through the carb and fill the tank. Then when you put gas back in it next season the carb won’t be trashed and you the tank won’t be corroded. Corn alcohol is bad for lawn equipment and carburetors in general. The main reason I run electric is to not deal with the issues with bad fuel and cheap carburetors. Good luck and hope thanks for the comment.
Mine don’t start i will tried this❤
Wow! I feel like a fool! It did not turn on because it was necessary to extend the handle of the machine. And the machine had been "damaged" for more than 9 months. But thanks for your advice. God bless you
You have to push the button and then pull the handle back notice that you did not do that
The grab bar on a push mower is pulled to allow to start before pushing the button. On a self propelled mower that bar would engage the wheels after pushing the button.
No you dont works both ways doesn't matter button bar first doesn't matter at all
@@xXxCrazyJay810xXx Maybe it doesn't matter after you fixed it But before you fixed it you would have to push the button 1st
@@james696969straw you are wrong and all 32 I bought all work the same way
I mean a paper clip
Answer still the same. Magnetic 🧲 works non magnetic don’t. Other way to say this is if it is a ferrous metal it will work.
Why would you risk injury with that hack? Maybe you should hack some shin guards too.😄
The ejection without a guard is slanted to the left rear and staying to the right of the ejection has worked fine. I really wonder why the company decided that the fixture for open ejection was an option clearly inspiring my hack? So was safety more important than profit?
