  • A documentary that focuses on early games from the arcade video game company, Taito. This capture is from the Laserdisc release of said documentary, which compiles the two volumes, since they were released separately via VHS tape.
Captured via Domesday Duplicator, courtesy of Tanks from Kineko Video. Video restoration (a hint of denoising in this case, potentially due to the disc itself) was also handled by Tanks from Kineko Video. For the purpose of the UA-cam upload, I lightly upscaled it to 1440p, using Handbrake, to sidestep UA-cam compression and to maintain the original video/audio quality as much as possible. Big thanks to Siz Zis for providing an English translation, of which was used as a basis for the English subtitles.

I came across this video thanks to a video about a version of Death Race on the NES. There, I found a comment mentioning Western Gun, which led me to a video of gameplay taken from this, and then to here.
With that out of the way, thanks for uploading this piece of history (as well as trying to mitigate the audio and video compression)!

Hi, I had some time in my hands and translated the descriptions by the narrator in case someone is interested. Those are for the Volume 1. I will supply the translations for Volume 2 below later.
    1:32
    SPEED RACE
"From the dawn of videogames until now, driving simulators have always been loved by the masses and had been in constant evolution. Speed Race is what can possibly be called the starting point of driving games. Controls consisted of a big-sized handle and accelerator pedals, at the player's feet. The track here proceeds straight on infinitely, with the obstacles being, one can say, simply the other race cars. While until then the game cabinets had a price of 50 yen for one play, this is the first ever successful game that adopted a 100 yen pricetag instead."
    3:19
    INTERCEPTOR
"A dogfight game where, lining up the sight in the middle of the screen with the enemy planes that appear one after another, one must shoot them down within a certain time limit. The shooting genre already represented the main trend since that time, but like with Blue Shark, which we will present later on, back then only the player could attack while the enemies couldn't, something which makes one really feel the sheer age of it.
The controller was modeled after the commands of an actual fighter plane, and even the term 'joystick', which has right now become a widely-known word, originally meant the control stick of a fighter plane."
    5:08
    WESTERN GUN
"A shooting game to be played in two. With a controller shaped like a pistol's grip with a gun trigger, you move your cowboy character while hiding in the shadows of cacti and rocks, trying to shoot the other player and competing to score points within a time limit.
The ability to freely move around on the screen in all directions was a novel element for the time."
    7:19
    SAFARI
"The player takes on the role of a hunter, controlling the movements of one's character and the direction of his hunting rifle, as he goes on to shoot down various animals such as lions and gnus. It is also one of the earliest games in which a high score display is also implemented.
Now, the sound for this game hasn't been recorded."
    7:47
    MISSILE X
"Here, one must strike with surface-to-surface missiles the enemy jeeps and tanks running across the wasteland. The player can control the missile both up and down and left and right, but since objects passing closer to one's vicinity are in turn faster and more difficult to take aim at, the score for it also gets higher. In this game, the enemy too would fire in response to the missiles launched by the player."
    10:19
    SPACE INVADERS
"Within the history of videogames, this is one of the most famous. Right now, when one needs to speak of old-school masterpieces, Space Invaders is right that. The player would push the button while moving around their character, shooting down the enemies coming one after another to the assault, making this the point of origin of shooting games.
The setting of an extraterrestrial invasion, for which it can be assumed that inspiration was taken from Star Wars, a widely popular movie during the period. The playful presentation on the attract mode. The sound effects brimming with a sense of tension. The presence of UFO which can make one earn many points if shot following a certain pattern. And so on and so forth. Small innovations, setting it apart from all the videogames released so far, can be spotted everywhere inside in it.
Moreover, between the 'rainbow' generated by the invaders as the move along while leaving a trail behind, and the so-called 'Nagoya attack' in which one waits until they reach the lowest row, this is also where easter-egg characters and secret moves have their roots. In turn, even the history of videogame strategies had their beginning in Space Invaders."
    15:10
    BLUE SHARK
"A shooting game where a diver swimming underwater must, within the time limit, shoot and catch the octopi and sharks appearing onscreen. The way how there wouldn't be any attacks coming from the opponent's side is old-school in style, but it was revolutionary for the sound effects, realistic for the time."
    17:01
    SPACE CHASER
"Space Chaser is of the 'dot-eater' genre, in other words one's playing character would make the dots floating over the path disappear by passing over them, and if one manages to wipe out all of the dots on the stage without crashing against the enemy first, it will be a 'stage clear'.
Pushing the button will make the player's rocket speed up, but using it too much will deplete all the fuel."
    19:39
    LUNAR RESCUE
"The objective is to ride a landing module from the mothership, rescue one's allies on the moon surface, and then return back to the mothership floating in air. Once one would begin descending to the moon, enemy UFOs would attack, and even upon returning to the spaceship, if the docking isn't performed correctly, the allies that were recovered with much difficulty would then fall down, meaning that one must brave through a number of various obstacles."
    21:48
    SPACE INVADERS PART II
"A game which should even be defined as a 'sequel', created as a result of the great success of Space Invaders. While the fundamental system remains the same -- new UFOs appearing on and off onscreen, a bonus screen which can only be seen if one successfully gets the 'rainbow' effect, invaders being dropped down by UFOs, and invaders which split and become two when hit, are all new additions to it.
Moreover, this is also one of the earliest games where, if one achieves a high score, it is possible to record one's name onscreen."
    25:13
    FIELD GOAL
"Building upon the concept of 'block-breaking' game, widely popular at the time, this game implements inside of it the style and appearance of American football. With the blocks seen like athletes defending the goal, the player must aim for it while finding a space through them."

Here is the translation for the narration on Volume 2.
      28:55
      CRAZY BALLOON
"This is a game where one must head to the goal spot riding on a hot air balloon that swings wildly left and right, while making sure not to hit the walls of the maze.
A great obstacle in it was the enemy character, a gigantic face which would suddently appear to blow away the air balloon and then disappear while laughing."
      30:58
      BALLOON BOMBER
"Enemy airplanes would drop one after another balloon-borne bombs, the 'balloon bombs', which one must blow up using the gun turret on the ground. With every attack sustained, the space where one can move the turret becomes more and more limited, making it harder to hit the enemy."
      33:04
      POLARIS
"A shooting game where, from one's submarine, one must hit the enemy's battleships and fighters. As one advances from one level to another, one's submarine can no longer rise past a certain point of sea depth, and once one has got to the deepest point, enemies which cannot be attacked from there would then show up."
      34:45
      QIX
"Qix is the name of the rod-shaped enemy which moves in a winding manner across the screen's field. The player must move their own character along the border, drawing a line over the field, and once the shape formed this way is complete, it will become part of one's area and fill up.
If the area claimed by the player surpasses a certain percentage, the stage is cleared, but one must also pay attention to Qix and the enemy characters moving along the border."
      36:57
      SPACE SEEKER
"As videogames evolved on, there began to appear also games containing inside different kinds of stages and screens. In Space Seeker, there's a map screen resembling planet Earth, a battle with the enemy air flotilla, and then the enemy's orbital fortresses, consisting thus of three screens.
The player, setting out from the base on the map screen, will fly toward the enemy's orbital fortresses, and there they must destroy them one after another."
      39:37
      BIRDIE KING
"This is a game providing a golf simulation. With the 'trackball' controller, one can manage the direction and the strength with which the ball is hit.
Between the mischiefs of the birds flying up in the air, and the direction of the wind as shown by the hole's flag, as well as the angle of the grass field on the green, the player is required to keep in mind a variety of factors as they play."
      41:48
      WILD WESTERN
"A shooting game having for its motif the train robberies from cowboy movies. Riding on a white horse, the player, while being careful not to smash against cacti and rocks, must fight against the enemy while skillfully using the train as a cover. Moreover, one can also jump on top of the train and attack from there."
      44:49
      TIME TUNNEL
"The setting sees the character that the player commands riding on a steam train and teleporting, by going through each stage's tunnel, from the past to the present, and then to the future.
While skillfully choosing the direction one intends to go by using the railroad switch points, one must avoid the attacks of shinkansen-like enemies, UFOs, and aliens, and head towards the future.
By taking on board as many passengers as possible in the stations found while on the way, one will earn more points."
      47:14
      SPACE CRUISER
"Set in the world of the year 2100 AD, this is a shooting game whose theme is to embark on a space cruising until the eventual destruction of an enemy's planet, in order to protect peace on Earth. Once passing through the squadron of UFOs one encounters at the beginning and then the asteroid zone, a space station then appears in sight. Successfully docking to the space station gives one a power-up.
After beating aliens and boss aliens, at last one will advance till the enemy's planet."
      50:30
      FRONT LINE
"A soldier, advancing alone into the forefront of the battlefield, that is the 'front line', must fight using guns and grenades as his weapons, capture a tank, and then in the last stage destroy the enemy's fortress and bring them to surrender, in what was for the time a game with an unusually rich plot narrative.
The graphics when the enemy soldiers are slain and the realistic war scenery were also a much-talked aspect."
      54:02
      ELEVATOR ACTION
"Sneaking in from the building's rooftop, the protagonist must fight against enemies by jumping and using his pistol, as he heads to the floors below by riding on the elevator. While in the middle of it, he would enter in the rooms with doors painted red, staling from there documents and weapons, with the stage being cleared when he safely reaches the parking lot in the basement floor.
The lights on the ceiling can be shot down with one's gun, with the enemy being slain if they land on them. Enemies can be lured under the elevator and then crushed by it. And so on and so forth. There are many techniques available."

I think you missed Safari. But other than that and Vol. 2, I'll look into adding subtitles for this based on your translation. Thanks!

Would you be willing to translate a NHK Japanese documentary series from 1991? It's a lengthy series, so compensation can be provided if needed.

Translations for Volume 2. I submitted them a while before as a reply to my other post, but I realized only now it got stuck in the UA-cam filter and it wasn't showing for everyone else, so I'll try resubmitting them again as a new standalone comment, since adding them in the previous one would be too long to handle.
