Even Ilayaraja used computer and synthesized sounds in his later movies like Neethane en ponvasantham, as far as I know... Obviously Ilayaraja is the greatest Tamil musician ever along with Msv, I'm not placing Ar Rahman along with them, but Rahman did something new and innovative in Indian music, and he is indeed, one of the greats. And you simply cant produce a Kwaja mere Khwaja or Radha kai se na chale or Uyire with mere computer knowledge bro.. Those are gems of pure musical brilliance.
Rahman brought indian music to the global stage , I can say raja handed over that role to him...its god's way of ensuring continuity and musical reach to the world. They are not same level but they are genius in their era.
Most Tamils criticise his character rather than his works. Funny part Tamils who doesn't understand the rudiments of music also call him as arrogant. Karpoora vaasanai theriyada kazhudaigal.
