As a 73 year old liberal, all I've ever wanted is medical care for all, good education for all, and good support systems for those in need. I've never virtue signaled, and didn't even know the term until you said it today. Not all liberals are elitest and preachy. It's a mistake to lump people together in a category. That said, I always appreciate your views and learn from them. Thank you.

I'm also a 73-year-old person who tries to pick and choose the best policies regardless the label, including what you've wanted. "Virtue signalling" is wingnut propaganda, and it saddens me that Frank Schaeffer is parroting. Is he trying to prove himself "cool", and above the rest of us mortals? That he has to prove he still has some hippie anti-establishment throbs left?

Thanks Mr. Schaffer, this needed to be said and needs to be heard by Democrats. Lifelong registered Democrat and labor guy. For decades I have been trying to tell my fellow Democrats that "you do not know how this sounds on the factory floor or in rural America, it is absolutely ruining our message". Chickens do indeed come home to roost.

There's preaching going on on both side's Frank and we're all preaching to the choir. Neither side is completely right or wrong about our life experiences and the way we take in the world. Fundamentalist Christians, radical conservatives etc. are just as guilty of this narrow depiction of the world as are the liberals. We're ALL in this together and that has to be discovered at a much deeper level.

I appreciate you, Frank. I am a 78-year-old Canadian, and like you, I am a former evangelical and a cancer survivor (prostate & colon). Hopefully, sanity will prevail, but I am surprised and saddened by the Trumpian mindset of many Canadians, some of who would like Canada to become the 51st US state. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Where we messed up is we let conservative media and the far right agenda create a narrative that “all” liberals were obsessed with the woke agenda, which isn’t true. Just because people decided to educate themselves to create a better life doesn’t make them elitist. Your argument is making a lot of assumptions about people and you are projecting a lot about people you don’t know. People who pulled themselves out of poverty to make a positive contribution to our country. We are angry too. We struggle financially, just like everyone else, due to income inequality and a system geared toward the rich. You act like liberals want to tell everyone how to live but look who is trying to control women, education and race dominance and wants to control all the money. Where liberals failed is they didn’t market their problem solving values effectively and assumed people would embrace peace and love for all (which just isn’t as sexy as macho bullying) and were not as assertive in the same dominate and crush model we see in conservative messaging. I like your commentary and I’m glad you’re getting people to think. Keep up the good work. The bottom line for everyone is we’re all in this together and everyone will be responsible for creating a more perfect union.

I love you Frank, but you are completely off base here. I've seen you leaning this way for a while and I'll be frank (no pun intended). I've lost my enthusiasm for your content.
I'll point out that I am no liberal elite. In fact, I'd likely be deemed a perfect maga candidate, by all measures, if not for having a moral compass and just enough education to have rejected the right wing con machine.
You've completely fallen for the right's framing of the liberal left and 'elites'.
The social justice issues you speak of are of a framing, and not based in reality. Very few very progressive lefties hold these views but they have been pushed to the outer perimeters of the 'left' while remaining under this tent. You making it sound as if Hillary or Kamala candidates ran their campaigns on any of these issues. They absolutely did not.
I'm not one of them but I remained optimistic that equality could someday be reached, and their voices heard.
I believe your stance actually puts yourself at least 10-15 degrees further right than I woud be, had I stayed in the life I previously led.
I hung ot with the most country, uneducated folks, you could imagine. I liked these folks. I connected with them on a visceral level. I played country music in bars for almost 15 years. I grew up hanging out with wannabe cowboys and drinking beer, all throughout my youth. But I saw the downward spiral of their grievances and their beliefs manifest into hatred, fear, and violence. I saw them congregating in churches and heard the drumbeats of 'spiritual warfare and 'putting on the armor of God' etc, and knew where this was heading, when my kids were infants over 20 years ago. My marriage dissolved soon after and my ex still holds those right wing 'Christian' beliefs.
You, my friend are working backwards, from where I was then, despite your origin to current story.
You are dead wrong about these folks. They are uneducated, hateful, heartless zombies, created by everyone from rush limbaugh to donald trump, to the furthest capillaries of john hagee, kenneth copeland, greg locke, and zuckerberg's facebook. They were trained, manipulated, indoctrinated, and groomed to hate Democrats, and eventually democracy on a daily basis through these influences, churches and networks, likely, at least partially guided and financed by the kremlin, kirill and the ROC.
You're catering to their base, and denying the truth; they ARE ignorant. You are on the wrong path, my friend and I hope you stop and look where you're headed very soon..

@@JB-pd4niAs a former conservative, I will tell you that the left often comes off as elitist, smug and virtuous. While I know that is not true of most on the left, it is a perception that persists and often for good reason. Frank’s words may sting, but they reflect the way things are and we should heed his words before it’s too late.

    • @Lucky9_9
      @Lucky9_9 21 годину тому +2

@@mikemalloy5776 Mike, I get that it can be frustrating when people on the left seem smug or act like they're better than others, but that’s not the main issue. We can find people on both sides who act that way. The real problem isn’t how some people act, it’s when we give up on what we believe in just because of how others behave.
Imagine saying, 'I decided not to go to college because some people acted smug about it.' Does that make sense? Or, 'I decided not to take a pay raise because some people acted smug about it.' That doesn't sound logical, right? So why would we not vote for someone who agrees with our values just because some people act a certain way?
America has become a place where people just want to disagree with whatever’s in front of them. 'Freedom' has turned into 'you can’t tell me what to do,' even if it ends up hurting us in the end. That’s not making decisions based on what’s best; it’s just reacting to the way people act.

The mistake is not applying that value to Trump supporters and listening to their concerns will genuine care for their needs. But, then again, they make it difficult because they are so intolerant. Science is a competitive game and already with one week of delay and defunding U.S. scientists China is gaining a week and soon it will be two weeks and a year. Our Scientists will fall behind and other countries will pull ahead because MAGA is trying to punish those who believe in diversity because they can not be tolerant or any differences.

I agree with Schaeffer about Trump and science. However, I disagree with his implication that liberals and leftists are necessarily "elitists." Granted that many politicians like Hillary Clinton are snobs, and too many other establishment liberals are too condescending for their own good. However, most leftists I know (as contradistinguished from, say, liberals in the Democratic Party) do not fit Schaeffer's description.
As I see it, the "culture wars" have been advanced primarily by evangelicals and Christian Nationalists, whose notions of what it means to be "Christian" (for example, the militarization of faith chronicled in Kristen de Prez's book JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE) would have appalled Jesus himself.
So unless I'm misunderstanding him, he seems to harbor rather contradictory notions. On the one hand, he criticizes liberals for trying to undermine traditional values (like strictly "binary" conceptions of gender), yet doesn't seem to see that a lot of the breaks from tradition in the cultural sphere -- for example, advances in civil rights for blacks, women, and workers -- can be traced to advances in science. We can't glorify progressivism in science while simultaneously expecting culture to remain unchanged.
And just who do we blame for these changes? Galileo for bucking Catholicism? Darwin for dumping Creationism? Freud for probing the sinister realms of the unconscious?
I believe a lot of our problems stem from divisions based on simplistic labels -- precisely labels like the ones I've grudgingly used here. If we can ever escape from these ludicrously reductionist categories, we might have a chance to unite as human beings and abandon our petty differences.
