  • I am making a simple Box and drawer for my pal Richard to sit under a heavy machine in his van, I am using 18mm OSB as it is super strong and easy to work with.
I am also using the new Hikoki 36v table saw for the whole job, it is very accurate and super quick and you can find out more about the saw here

I built a similar simple bathroom cabinet (fits under the sink) with MR MDF and it works fine without expensive drawer hardware. Thanks again for such a straight forward educational video and I think you are probably delivering more practical professional training in key construction skills than most FE courses.

  • @RI-uv3lm
    @RI-uv3lm Рік тому +7

Nice one Robin. Amazing to watch you work, in an organised manner, as always
    Suggestions:
Add 2 openings/holes on the sides of the drawer for ease of lifting out, once it has been pulled out a bit I.e. at 1/3rd (to pull) & in the centre (to lift) & both, 1/3rd from the top of the drawer, on both sides. This will prevent the box from dropping on one’s foot
Maybe even add removable partitions, inside the drawer, depending on the size/s of the tools used
Waxing the bottom will help it move more smoothly, particularly when the box is loaded & heavy
OSB may wear out. Maybe a couple of half inch, 6mm, wood strips, fixed on the bottom of the outer box (not the drawer) will do the trick. This will require a bit more work & adjustment.
Bottom of the drawer will get worn & battered, when removed & placed on work sites in a regular basis
Also an improvised stop-lock, even a wood peg to make sure that the drawer does not slide out while the van is in motion/sudden brakes
A rubber sheet on top to prevent the machine from sliding & at the bottom, to prevent the box from sliding. Additional safety!
    Note:
I am not a carpenter or a DIYer. I am just a fan who is learning from you. IMO, even if it is just £30, I would like to make it work like it is £300! 😀

Just got a van and looking for fit out ideas so this is well timed. The saw must be quiet to tolerate it without ear defenders. Also interesting to use OSB instead of ply which all helps budget wise. I know there's a promotional element with this but honestly I think you may have suckered me into buying in of these table saws. Ideal for me. Also I notice there's an outfeed rail capability to for safety ripping long pieces. WRT the drawer I think some base runners would make it so much better.

Great video as ever, one for the future with your table saw: You can actually get a dado stack for it as Hikoki/Metabo HPT sell the same model in the US. Very unusual for a saw sold in the EU to have an arbor big enough, never mind a portable one! I'm sure you have the 36v transformer as well but if not worthwhile for the table saw especially.
Just hope it doesn't break, Hikoi have had mine for almost 3 months now waiting on a part for a burst motor!

My question is, if you were using the rail saw to cut the bits down rough then using the table saw to cut down precise, why wouldn’t you just use the rail saw to cut precise?? Half the cutting and work and setting up??? This is why I have never owned a table saw, buttttt!!! I really want one so why do I need it other than creating more work for myself?!?!? Serious question

Won't last a week with that weight on top. Two small drawers and a divider for support. Also for any beginners table saws are a big waste of money. Any tracksaw can deal with simple projects like this. Leave rebates and dados for joinery and then a good router is what you will use

Once you have got the hang of how versatile and accurate a table saw is, you use it all the time.
We aren't all beginners, and whilst this may be a simple project, its hardly typical of what some of us do. And if you've got the kit, why not use it if its the best tool for the job.
Whilst the router can do the edge rebates on a box like this, it is slower, messy, and dulls the cutter very quickly.
