I want more events and more real changes in the town. More stores would be greatly needed as well. It just feels bare. I would love to have custom shops and you can assign any villager to work at said shop and watch your villagers have real routines. I want their houses to grow or have them request to move. The thing is it’s a decorating simulator now, for anyone who doesn’t want to island trade to get furniture you probably will have a very long road getting the stuff you want even if decorating is your goal. I used to like talking to the shop keepers and doing tasks for villagers, learning the gossip, the lore, etc. I had hoped that it would be combination of making a beautiful environment and all of that but they took out gyroids, Brewster, the mail pelicans, the conversations repeats constantly with villagers :/ idk they at least could have copied the old dialogue into the game at some point.

  • @kemmoado309
    @kemmoado309 3 роки тому +215

The main problem of new horizons is that building your island is fun but living in it isn’t, I could honestly go on an entire rant to why that is and how it’s a good game but a bad animal crossing game and that’s mainly due to the lack of charm.
In older AC games there was A LOT of charm and small details like seeing Gulliver while scaling with kappin or booker slowly falling asleep when you’re hiding away and so on, it also had a lot of wacky furniture and items like the guyroids alongside some super cartoony and lovable characters who have surprisingly deep stories (able sisters and Tom nook for example) to wrap it all up the older games had a superb cartoony and cute art style and some amazing dialogue with a good sense of humor
Fast forward to new horizons and all of that is gone, the furniture selection is now small with most of the furniture just looking... normal, small details in previous AC games is basically nonexistent, there’s nothing to see beneath the surface level of every character, guyroids aren’t even in the game, 80% of AC characters aren’t in new horizons either, the game also has generic dialogue that’s very short and repeats A LOT and finally the art style of this game is more subtle, rather than having buildings pop out and the grass patterns being clear as day it all looks too subdued, like seriously compare the pine tree from older games to new horizons
Basically it became a BUILDER simulator and not a LIFE simulator and that’s really sad. Decorating used to be a small part of AC games only existing in your house and but in your town but now? It became a focal point

I mean, it's devoid of content, and lacks a proper progression system. After you basically finish the tutorial, the only things you really have to do are upgrading your house and decorating the island. If you're not too big into the decoration aspect, then upgrading your house is the only thing you pretty much have left, and there's not as many upgrades as previous games. You can finish the museum, but it's not as fun as previous games, and it's not like you get much out of doing it.
I just wish we'd get a game that had a better progression system, and that makes you work for everything you have. As someone who’s put so many hours into new horizons, I absolutely agree. I think the reason why I have so many hours, is because this game came out at a perfect time. But another reason why I have so many hours…is because there’s not a lot to do. That sounds stupid, but hear me out. Within the first month I was playing this game, I had played a ton, but I starting to run out of things to do, so most of my time was kicking out villagers I didn’t want, and messing around on my island. Of coarse, I was bored during quarantine, and this basically was all I had to do. With previous animal crossing games, there was so much more to do, than just designing your island as you probably know. Unfortunately, new horizons either doesn’t have purposes for specific characters due to convenience (cop dogs, Harriet, Wendell, Resetti, Shrunk.) (Nintendo thinks it’s convenient, but it takes the soul out of what animal crossing is.) Same thing with Kappn, basically because it takes place on an island, and going to another island wouldn’t feel as special as going to one in new leaf. I think Nintendo’s best approach would be to create new npcs that fit the island theme, and if they were to make a new game in the future, you can bring back those classic characters that were absent in NH. Don’t get me wrong, I would be thrilled if Kappn, and others returned, but maybe that could be a better approach for the type of game this is

This is exactly why I hate the ‘more hours played = better quality the game’ attitude. Like you said the reason so many people have so many hours in it is because it came out at one of the peak times in the pandemic. There’s also the factor that the game forces you to waste time with its tedious, drawn out mechanics like having to go in and out and in and out of the changing room in able sisters because you can only purchase one colour of the same type of clothing at a time, and the tools having awful durability.

I liked acnh for about a month. I did some stalk market trading to pay my debts off a bit faster because for me, I don’t like feeling like my next objective will take weeks and weeks of my time. As soon as K. K. Slider came to sing I thought “What now?” The answer was... Nothing. I tried to get into decorating my island but... All the slow animations, the having to wait a real day to see or get new furniture or having to quit the game, go to my settings, setting my clock ahead, opening up the game again, waiting for it to load, only to not see anything I wanted? It was disheartening. Acnh felt like a constant struggle. I always did my objective with the idea of getting to the fun part, but I never felt like I was having fun past month 2. I came back and played for a few of the newer updates, but not for too long. The constant, slow grind felt like all the game had to offer, and the charm of the world feeling alive wasn’t present with the template npcs. I’m sad to say the acnh was a 4/10 for me, because of the lack of things to do and the incredibly slow pace.

I usually play these games with the real time clock, and I never time travel, but I also ran out of things to do after 2 months. I have about 100 hours in the game, which is nothing compared to my New Leaf save.. and I just don't find the game to be that fun. There's nothing really to work towards after the tutorial ends, and the game just lacks progression as well as things to do with bells.
I remember when I first got New Leaf, I would wake up every day for a couple of months at most, and would continuously play. There were so many new things happening each and every day. New Villagers moving in, new NPC's wanting to set up shop, shop upgrades, villagers moving out, etc. It was wonderful, and I wished New Horizons was the same. The concept of building a town from scratch was a cool idea, and it could've added tons of hours to the playtime.. but the whole thing lasted about a week, and you didn't have to really work for anything.. you just waited around. There weren't any real requirements for bells, or many buildings to build. You don't even have to provide materials to upgrade the buildings either.
Couple that with updates that add barely any content, and sometimes bring back old features.. and you have one of the slowest games in the series, with the least amount of content..

I think that the game's main thing isn't "I'll let you do whatever you want" but more like "I don't have anything for you to do". Players should have the freedom to choose what to do, but there's a fundamental lack of content that you simply don't have anything interesting to do besides creating your own imagination of interesting things, everything is lackluster.

I totally agree, my first big animal crossing game was New Leaf too (besides city folk when I was too young to understand what I was doing lol). I remember staying up until way past midnight playing New Leaf with the music cranked up, catching sharks on Tortimer island. I also vividly remember when one of my villagers would ask to move away, I would get choked up as I actually held bonds with them. I spent thousands of hours making memories, collecting shops, decorating my island, and completing my museum. I got through a tough period of my life with New Leaf, and I could always rely on that game to keep my mind busy.
Now, with this newer game, I find myself scratching my head for something to keep me occupied, and having to turn my switch volume off because I cannot STAND the New Horizons hourly music. Everything that made New Leaf so memorable was stripped away for the sake of simplicity. Even Pocket Camp kept me entertained for longer, and that game was free! Even though New Leaf was less customizable, it made up for that fact with charm and consistent things to keep me busy. They had every opportunity to make this game great, but decided to hide our content behind the guise of "updates" that don't add more than cosmetic items. New Horizons focused WAY too much on customization and not enough on what makes Animal Crossing great. I guess I'll have to start playing New Leaf again...

I actually kinda agree with you. I think the problem lies when New Leaf became Tumblr popular a few years ago with the aesthetic decorating side, where people valued how their town looked vs how people played older games (focusing on interactions, catching bugs/fish). Fast Forward to today where New Horizons feels like its only purpose is an island decorating game. So many people who play really only go on to decorate and make money to decorate. Things like Nookazon were created to trade furniture to complete your island's aesthetic. I think the developers of NH focused a lot on the decorating aspect and forgot what made the game so magical. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on the people who only who love and play to decorate, but they should have built on the other features from past games to make this game a favorite for past and new players.

i played each game of animal crossing!
i wish someone would bring up pocket camp and happy home.
those two i feel were the "what we can really do" games.
seeing as they had the campers be more playful with the items
in your camp. and you could dress up along with them and do more
fun activities for crafts and special items.
i loved the garden events too as you also go rarities!
happy hope had not only the NPCs were interactive with items,
you could be too! and the ideas of schools, malls and more
stores built by you was amazing that i feel could have been put in

Yay I was waiting for you to upload a video on Animal Crossing post E3. I have 1600 hours on New Horizons and I can agree with everyone else, the game feels very boring at times. I only have that many hours due to me constantly working on and changing my island's appearance. New Horizons is more of a "Island Decorating" than an actual Animal Crossing game. So many features are missing that I doubt Nintendo will replace or make better, so many characters are gone with no sign of returning and there's no where to go to escape feeling trapped on your island, (unless you count visiting someone else or Harv's Island). I want to be able to go to a city or shopping plaza like in City Folk and visit Harriet, Kicks, Gracie, and Leif. I want to go to Kapp'n's island and find rare bugs and play minigames like in New Leaf. I want to be able to enjoy mini things like making food with the fruits or fish. I want a farming aspect to the game like harvesting vegetables and proper gardening. I want to be able to make juice from the fruits on the island. Speaking of fruits, I wish we had more fruit variety like lemons, permissions, bananas and lychees. The game feels so bare and lacking so much and its very disappointing that Nintendo has seemingly shown that they've got their money and no longer care for a huge portion of their gaming community.

    • @Mar-pe9kx
      @Mar-pe9kx 3 роки тому +11

Exactly! In New Horizons, I only find myself decorating my island. I feel there is also pressure to have a "beautiful" island, so I focus my playing time on that. There also isn't a whole lot else to do in the game. If there is a quality of life update, I hope they add more bugs and fish to catch, more fruits, and just more things to do on the island like past games

I was so excited for New Horizons when it was first revealed, I was so excited for it when I first started playing too. But damn, the excitement quickly burnt out.
The lack of upgrades, the bland villager personalities, the removal a multilayer island (which seems like it would've been a perfect fit for a game based around islands). What can I say, New Horizons doesn't have the same Animal Crossing charm that the other games have. They've stripped that charm away. Its pretty much just an island design game.

This isn't the only game suffering from Nintendo's bare bones at launch "but there's updates later!" problem. It seems like a majority of their major releases now have this issue, where they release these games that are alright, but lacking significant content, and then promise to add it in later... In some cases they add some of it back, in most the game gets a few small things and then fizzle out.
Nintendo has learned that they don't have to finish a game to get the money, and ACNL's massive sales have only encouraged this.

Seeing how well this game sold, I'm really worried for the future of not only the Animal Crossing franchise, but the rest of Nintendo's franchises as well, because this just encourages Nintendo to keep pumping out half-baked games. I remember when I reset my acnl town, Something about Tom nook made me change the time by a few hours and a day because it was night. Luckily, the able sisters had the golden crown and I bought it.

Your opinion is totally valid and you're right, a lot of the updates won't just fix the game. Personally, it fits my style for the most part so I find the most fun in it. Mostly because it's the least stressful to play especially for all my issues. Even talking with villagers in the past was stressful especially earning photos in New Leaf (this point is talking about NL, WW was fine.) I do believe there's stuff that I DEFINITELY want. The Roost is probably my favorite experience in the whole game, getting to work there is something I do practically every day.
But NH DOES have some flaws. And I never take any issues with people who share their opinions like yours. And I can fully agree. My biggest issue with people commenting on this issue is people get TOO negative, don't give credit where it's due, and act like it's an objectively bad game (when it actually isn't, it's a mediocre experience at best.)
I also do believe it depends on playstyles and personality and even neurodivergency. My friends and I all have ADHD and we never get bored of it. My friends never enjoyed New Leaf as much as New Horizons. I'm also autistic and I find that the routine and repetition helps me a lot. For my mental health and overall personality, NH helps me the best. I've had actual meltdowns and cried over stuff in New Leaf and Wild World. Cause of sensory overload due to the music in New Leaf as well as having to deal with Isabelle being the worst when it comes to placing projects and then my flowers dying and villagers moving out. Does it make those games bad because they aren't my favorites? No. Overall, I still very much so enjoy the games :) they really are amazing games, they just don't always do it for me like New Horizons. I do enjoy the personality that is there in the villagers. Them playing, working out, hanging out. I mean, Katt and Chevre are dating on my island and they are ALWAYS around each other and going on walks and sitting together. I miss that a lot when I play New Leaf. Personally I'm an actions speak louder than words person so it works for me, but don't misunderstand me, I DO want improved dialogue and have been happy with the bits of dialogue we've been getting. Though I still have a hard time understanding sometimes how people say they're so different (I don't see many differences in New Leaf and only some differences in Wild World, but maybe I'm not paying attention, again I'm autistic so I can totally see me just not understanding it :)), but I can agree it gets repetitive. I have 3 normal villagers. I love em to death, but dear god, it drives me insane sometimes.
Overall, the game is good and decent, but it does cater to a particular set of people. And people thinking updates will make them love the game again, I don't think so. Because once those people (not everyone who might be reading this btw) get the updates they want, they'll burn out again. I also feel it does have to do with time travel in a way too. A lot of people time travelled a lot (nothing wrong with that, my friend does it too) and it can lead to burnout. Even as Illymations said in her AC video, she completed everything in previous games so fast that it burnt her out and she reset. Not everyone does this though and I'm just trying to say: there's a lot of reasons people are getting burned out. But I do agree, updates probably won't fix everything. I do wish there were more upgrades for nook's cranny, I wish other people like Kicks and Leif could return. I wish we had more dialogue in the villagers and such, I wish some things would be made easier, I want Zelda items back and the mannequins and so much more. I definitely agree with a lot of the criticism against NH.
I don't even know what I'm tryna say anymore so guess I'll finish it off. I really agree with you. I'm someone who this game works perfectly for, but it doesn't mean I don't see the same flaws as you. I can look past em and not get bored personally, but I do find myself longing for some old features too.
"I mean, you can actually SEE Resetti in this one. What more could you want?"
Simple, to not see him so I may have a good experience :) /j

At first I thought it was the game I wanted to play for years when I first got it (it was my first Animal Crossing game) but then when older players started showing how the older games had more content, I felt disappointed and gave up playing after getting 5stars

New Horizons was my first animal crossing game. I really liked it at first, and was really interested in the updates since I've never played any previous titles.
But now that I've dug deep into the past games, I realise New Horizons falls short in terms of a sequel. It just... got boring. Villagers say the same thing over and over, there's nothing to do.. and I just can't find the same motivation that I had in the beginning, even after resetting.
It's a nice game, for a while. Then it gets repetitive, and soon you get burned out. And even if you finally get the perfect island for yourself, you have nothing to do anymore. You've accomplished all your goals. You've finished everything.
    It's time to move on.

I don’t even speak to my villagers. No point. I don’t want to hear their pointless talk. I just design and walk around them.

I’ve played every animal crossing game except the first one. When new leaf came out, I played it for about a year straight. As I grew older I played off and on, with each period lasting about three months (off and on). I restarted my town many times and I don’t think I ever got truly bored, the characters, the items and the music all make it so good. It’s not just nostalgia that makes me go back to the game, either.
New horizons really capitalised on the decoration craze we have right now, irl and games. It’s not a bad thing but they left the most important part out of it.

I totally agree. And sadly I got the feeling, that Nintendo is taking a similar direction with many games, naming Pokemon as example. Less focus on the story and the possibility to play a game for over 300 hours and still explore new stuff or at least have the world feel self-contained and sort of real.

Thank you for saying what I've been mulling over since Nintendo did nothing for the AC anniversary. ACNH is a bare bones game. People still like it and that's fine. But i know what i wanted and expected. I'm afraid this will give Nintendo the impression that bare minimum gameplay is what we wanted. But then again I can't keep thinking Nintendo is this tiny Indie studio that listens to fan feedback. They make tons of money regardless of what fans want and will keep doing what makes them the most money and what people will fall for. Rehashed old titles with bare bones gameplay are just the easiest money maker for them now and it's upsetting bc of how much I loved New Leaf and all of its content. I haven't even bought aminos because of how disappointing ACNH has been.
Edit: And on some level i forgive my past self for holding out hope that ACNH would get better with time /because/ Nintendo said they planned 3 years of updates for the game but thus far have added nothing but scraps and tidbits from older games but never the gameplay/characters/items that we as a community missed/wanted. And the fact that they didn't do a major update or tease at future events/add ons on the AC Anniversary really made me sad. But now I just settle for the fact that they never intended for New Horizons to be anything more than a hollowed out version of Animal Crossing with a couple of design features.
Now pocket camp is where they're making their real money. They have such cute and stylish items there yet none of that was ported into ACNH as a lot of people wanted/expected. It's just upsetting for old fans to see 😞

No interest in playing these days. These events are not enough. Ive had my fill and have moved on to other games. The unwillingness of Nintendo to add QOL additions and improvements and new features to make the overall game better is sad. But they dont care. Fans and the community have been asking for this for months but Nintendo dont give a crap. The game is breaking all kinds of records in sales and that means they really dont have to add anymore content (NONE event related). 3 new items and temporary events are just that. TEMPORARY. We needed new buildings or shops and cool new features added to extend the life of the game. Releasing "content" updates in form of events, and calling it new content dont count. Past games in the series had all these "events" in the full game already. This is lazy is half assed. Sorry not sorry.

Honestly, I preferred the old games too, for me it was just painstaking and frustrating to design my island, the whole new ‘feature’ of how far you can customise your island just sucked the enjoyment out of the game. I preferred new leaf where what you could do was limited and you didn’t have to worry so much about layout and design and could instead focus on the other elements of the game.

I completely agree, I hope Nintendo doesn't take advantage of this games success and make the next game even more like nh and less like everything before
