That's a nice set up. It reminds me of my friend, Harry, who is in heaven now. He was big on HAM radios. You're smart to think about communications as part of survival.
Hope you read this, Dave. You’ve inspired me to study for my test. There’s a LOT of info here but I’m motivated from a mobile prepper pov to provide emergency comms to my community and further out. Times are strange and it’s smart to prepare ahead for them. Stay warm and keep the radio series hot!
Just in case you have wondered why your receive audio cuts out every so often, it is the weather radio alert monitor. Enabling that in the menu causes your receiver to briefly switch to your weather channel to check for a SAME code to be broadcast in a severe weather event. If it bothers you it can be disabled in the menu.
Everytime I see you use the 705 it makes me want one even more. Appreciate the walkthrough on your setup, always love to see more people involved and promoting ham radio. 73
The most self reliant guy in the world now has self reliant comms! That is truly awesome dude. Love the vids. Like to see more ham. Congrats and welcome de KK4SMM. 👍 on the WR TIA. Hope to log your station some day. 73!
First noticed you talked about having ham gear in a video not long ago, nice to see more about it. I have had my license for well over half of my life now. 73
Great portable ops video Dave. You have a nice setup indeed. I too am an Amateur Radio operator - W8APP and I am big into JS8. I was fortunate to be an Beta tester of v 1.0 & an Alpha tester of v 2.0 You will find my station on 7.078 usually 24/7. I too have a portable setup Yeasu FT891, 16Ahr LiFEP0 battery, Raspberry Pi 4B, KM4ACK EFHW antenna as well as the Wolf River Coils TIA Platinum. Along with SSB operations, I work PSK, Contestia, Olivia, MFSK and I have off grid email capabilities using Pat and Winlink as well. I would love to do some portable ops in a hot tent with my teenage son who is an operator but unfortunately, we are not setup for that. I will certainly keep my out for you on the waterfall. I will leave a message for you to retrieve from my station. Keep the great off grid radio operation videos coming! I hope to see you on the waterfall sir! 73'
Back in early 90s my unit used a device with 64 character encryption to send 160 characters of text via AM and SatCom radios. The benefit was global comminication versus line of sight like FM. I was very well educated on setting up a dipole in a tactical scenario behind enemy lines. Good times.
Great setup Dave. A lot od State Siđe coming in to the UK at the moment and solar flux between 110 and possibly 125 this week...so what a great time for radio operators. Do love that tent too. 73's 26KT001/26DR901 Kent England
Dave you're such an inspiration and incredible mentor! I know I'm not alone in this thought but you're the brother/ uncle ,/ dad all us men wish that we had!
Very cool set up those tents are amazing. I paired a winnerwell stove due to the stove pipe issue but does make the stove stick out a bit more. Thanks for the info Dave.
You are living the dream in my opinion my friend. I’m looking for the day I can go out and camp for days in end and play with my radio and just enjoy life.
Hey Dave, I think a DX commander for the jeep would be good for a base station or field days. It's a resonant all band antenna that's pretty simple uses a fibreglass pole and wire elements. It's especially handy on tops of hills with no trees. Also since it's resonant and doesn't need a tuner it's great for QRP since there are lower losses. I use mine with a Xiegu X6100, similar to the IC-705 but without 2m/70cm (I have an Anytone 878 for that). 73's de HA5RV
How did I miss that you were a HAM... Great minds and all that I suppose. My friend and I run EFHW for 20m and with the KX2 on 10w hit Moscow Russia at a 57 from Boardman,OR. Always a good time!
My boyfriend and I follow your channel. We have the same stove and tent. I heard you complain about the stove pipe. Reason its on the front,so it doesn't allow the smoke to go into the tent when opening the stove door. If you want to cook on the stove, best way to position is sideways so its safer and you have a nicer view from the bed. Also you get more cooking area. We changed the door on the stove to the model "vector" . We can send you pictures if you would like. Love your channel.
Way too much adventure fun there. I always was fascinated by DX work from field locations. The thought of a straight key operator in a hidden location in a black and white adventure movie dance through my imagination pretty easy.
I work JS8 some times, mostly on 40m. Made some good contacts with the mode. If I see you calling CQ next ti.e I'm on, I'll give you a shout. 73, W4ISB Mike in Tennessee.
Very cool, love to see more radio videos on YT. Nice setup. Keep em coming. Also you’d be classified portable, not mobile, as far as ham goes for that setup.
Cool. I'm currently studying for my General License, and want to setup SHTF communications. I'm thinking a 10 meter for local communications, an NVIS setup for regional, and something like JS8Call like you've got going. I have no experience with any of them, but I think that's my plan of action for comms. Obviously I've got 2 meter/ 70 cm HTs for close communication. Along with weather radio, and regular FM/AM broadcast radio receiver, and I think I should have a pretty good communication setup if there's no cell service or internet.
These are my happy places. Laying on my back with iPad on my chest watching guys like Dave play in the woods and talk survival shit. Lol. We’re all just big kids and life is truly the tits!! Been a fan since duel survival, Dave. Appreciate ya! Check out my atv cooking vids. Much love!
Thanks for the information believe it or not, I am looking to get certified just recently. In a grid down situation reaching out to the next country/state can save lives...
Cool beans! I listen on 20- 40- and 80m Ham license is on my bucket list tho- 😎 you want to hear a disgrace of ham radio- 7.200 LSB. Its what some call the "Beer garden" LOL
hey Dave, the stove from the pemmingan video it's not up on the website as of last thursday when i checked when will it be up? i'm looking to maybe get a new one and i'd like to see the specs on it to compare it to the apex 2!
Can you show some field expedient HF antenna designs? I made a directional VHF Yagi from an old tape measure that can make contacts over AMSAT satellite repeaters
When studying, did you just use the book? or was there some online course you found that helped you out a lot? Im about to order the ARRL manual, but ive heard a lot of stuff about Gordon West as well.
Dave, will you be doing a hot tent series like you did with “Journal of the Yurt”?? That series is how I became a subscriber of yours and is one of my favorites that you’ve done.
Hi man, I just want to let you know that I'm studying all your videos about trapping. I bought myself a few 6X6 double spring body trap and long spring foot trap. But after watching a later video I realized that the Duke dog proof coon trap is much better. So I willl get some of them too. I have some many questions. Sorry if they look so simple, but do you know where I can place my traps in NYS? I think I should get a permit and probably there is some season for doing so. Also I'm not sure if I can do it in Winter. There is so much knowledge in those videos that I will have to buy a notebook to write notes , each video has too much information. Thanks
You have quite a nice set-up but I have a question. R u EMP protected? If shtf happens, your radios aren't worth a crap because they will get fried. You should check into EMP Shield. They will cover everything you got. Just food for thought for an excellent setup that you have especially being mobile. Have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry!
Raspberry pi is good budget option. 40m is where the most JS8 activity is tho I’ll have to hop on 20m and tryn find ya one day. G90 here with a efhw and raspberry pi running KM4ACK build a pi. 73 Dave from N4JDD
Dave, do you ever use FT8? I run FT8 on 20 meters with an IC-7300 and a tapped mobile antenna on a 10' piece of conduit (highly restricted apartment rules). Hope to catch you on the air. 73 N6ΔΔΔ
I saw that box of Duraflame fire starter behind your cot. That's cheating. You should be using bark tinder and a flint and steel. Lol (joke) It was a good video.

The ICOM IC-705 is a fantastic radio for this type of setup. It does just about everything.
Great quality video Dave. Glad you got this working!

I have been a ham for over 16 years and I'm impressed how fast you have progressed. Keep up the great videos I'll be watching.
Dave you’re the best! Thanks brother for all the high quality information over the years. God bless brother.
Thank you for showing JS8Call to the world! Hope to see you on the network someday.
Really like these longer videos Dave .. please keep the longer videos coming !

Watching how to load a 12 gauge as a muzzleloader by Dave and a Dave notification pops up!

Love the camping portion of this. The radio is optional. Love and blessings from Ontario Canada!
Nice! Glad to see you promoting the hobby!!
Thanks for the shout out Dave.
Really enjoyed this video and your setup. Hoping to see you on my screen.

It also is all mode all bands. 2 meter and 70 cm am, fm, ssb, and CW. Also monitoring everywhere if you have the frequency.
Nice little coms base you have set-up there.
I'd love to have a ham but being broke all the time won't allow it , but I do have some cheap com's for now and a Eton solar radio.
Oh man, you and Josh out in Cali should do a show together one day. Good excuse to go out and enjoy some southern Cali weather.
I read your article in the backwoods man about buck saws good stuff!!!
A DX Commander Expedition or even a Classic would make as great addition to your overland setup as far as antennas go.
Interesting the equipment you chose to share here. I might wonder what your call is. Mine is KQ2E
I work JS8 some times, mostly on 40m. Made some good contacts with the mode. If I see you calling CQ next ti.e I'm on, I'll give you a shout.

👍👍Fascinating! Man that radio is tiny compared to the one pops gifted me, 👀
Hey Dave you can install and run windows on a mac via parallels, vmware, or boot camp. I run parallels personally and it works great
Will wood pellets work in that stove?
Can you raise an antenna with a small drone?
I’m seriously considering some of your training just to be able to share common interests with other men that isn’t work related
You never disappoint!
QRP Guys has an 49:1 EFHW that requires no tuner. My in tune well 80-10 meters all but 10 meters is under 1.5 and 10 meters tune under 2.
Great set-up, but have you thought about setting up a cargo trailer for camping? The advantage of a cargo trailer is that you don't have to pitch it.
Thanks for the information believe it or not, I am looking to get certified just recently. In a grid down situation reaching out to the next country/state can save lives...
Definitely love these videos

Nice set up. FLDIGI is another good one to use It's the Swiss army knife of digital comms.
Could a tethered heat shield (survival blanket, etc) beam that heat from the stove out through the tent flap so it doesn't cook the tent so bad?
Dave, you may get some additional ideas if you do some research on NVIS antennas. NVIS is used almost exclusively on 40/80 meter bands.
hey Dave, the stove from the pemmingan video it's not up on the website as of last thursday when i checked when will it be up? i'm looking to maybe get a new one and i'd like to see the specs on it to compare it to the apex 2!

Another great video brother thank you!
That being said; Outstanding video.
Getting into comms now. Other than handheld, your setup looks much like mine because you follow same guy from Finland.
Very cool videos you do
Can you show some field expedient HF antenna designs? I made a directional VHF Yagi from an old tape measure that can make contacts over AMSAT satellite repeaters
what's call sign?
It would be nice if you would put the equipment you use in the notes.
Going to have to save up a lot of pennies for that icom.

I also got the same radio. If you got internet when your out, you can try to run wspr. To see how far you reach. Good way to test your antenna.
The hottest band for JS8 seems to be 40m.
Dave, I didn't know you were a Ham. Awesome 73 AE0IY.
Hey Dave. Off topic. Your PKS Mountain Lion is the best fixed blade bushcraft knife ever known or heard of. Just saying
Very interesting 👍
Comms so important easy enough to see
I need to get my rig back up and running
How is Rufus doing
Very cool.
Dave, will you be doing a hot tent series like you did with “Journal of the Yurt”?? That series is how I became a subscriber of yours and is one of my favorites that you’ve done.
Try some CW, Dave

You can almost eliminate the station above you by using a narrower filter.
Way cool brother
Dave, did you need to get your Technician Class license for this?
I have my General
Don't have a IC 705, but my FT 818nd and two Walmart SLA batteries work ok for me.
Dave, do you ever use FT8? I run FT8 on 20 meters with an IC-7300 and a tapped mobile antenna on a 10' piece of conduit (highly restricted apartment rules). Hope to catch you on the air. 73 N6ΔΔΔ
ya, 20m is pretty dead after sunset, more of a daytime band. 7m at night is where it's at. I've had lots of luck on 30m on js8 and ft8. KCØUWF, MN
