      And yet it plays a lot different then a real piano. Obviouslt you might say, but it’s not that different in positioning. The tap is just much different all those years practicing don’t actually are actually working against you when you’r trying to be expressive...

    • @esmailkhalili7149
      @esmailkhalili7149 3 роки тому

      Not entirely true. Pianos are very sensitive dynamically. Certainly you cant pitch bend or add vibrato but you can play quite expressively still. There may not be any aftertouch but the way you physically approach the keys can determine how the notes sound. There's a bit of semantics involved but it still makes a difference.

    I admit that it is a revolutionary design and a fantastic innovation. I love its look and feel. Jordan Rudess is the Progressive Musical Prophet and I can only think of him bringing the God's "seaboard message" to the masses :)
    In addition, players must be named as "seaboardist", rather than "pianist" or "keyboardist". As an example, Cory Henry plays it as a keyboardist and not so fancy ( sorry no offence.. ).
    On the other hand Marco Parisi plays it as a "seaboardist". When you watch their youtube videos back to back, you'll see the difference and what I mean.. :)
    The main reason is the playing mechanics cause a disadvantage for a classical pianist to benefit as it is in this form. It is quite hard to get CLEAN NOTES while playing either "Presto", "Vivace" or even any tempo with an "Accelerando".
    It seems to me that this instrument - with the way it is - may only serve to synth type players or movie composers. And maybe to amateur hobbyists ( if the price drops significantly ! ).
    Regards,

    It's not like a linnstrument or some other left field idea that encapsulates the ideas of the seaboard, but completely revamps how we play on the thing
    The seaboard is an evolution of the keyboard/piano. Taking a familiar concept like the keyboard, applying ideas for expressive playing (vibrato, slide, etc) but passing them through the filter of how humans approach music playing and keeping the concept of human touch in mind with the squishy surface
    It truly is the melding of expressive playing, human familiarity and human interfacing. It's a keyboard, but also not. It's a digital instrument with an analog ideology

    I feel like I would really like this. My main instrument is guitar, so whenever I play a keyboard I instinctively try to do vibrato by wiggling my fingers on the keys

  • @vampolascott36

    Since I'm primarily a guitarist, I always felt that the traditional keyboard was limited in terms of expression. After seeing the demonstration of the Roli, I think I've found a synthesizer input solution that approaches or surpasses the expressiveness of a guitar or violin. But are you limited to the proprietary synthesizer software that comes with it? And how well does the Roli play with the hardware synthesizers I already own?

    That thing is pretty wild. Looks like it is very comfortable and easy on the fingers. I like the bending, but it always sounds very soft, like you have to bend EVERY note, or is it the constant echo that makes it sound noisy?. Can't you get sharp notes without the echo like the guitar?

    Can anyone suggest a suitable keyboard stand for the Seaboard Grand Stage (the 61 key version)? Ideally taking into account the lateral movement caused by the vibrato gesture. In my case it'll be staying in one place so it doesn't need to be portable. Incidentally, does anyone know which stand Jordan is using for this demonstration?

    • @einarabelc5
      @einarabelc5 7 років тому +2

      Sorry, but that's ALL you can do. The VERY essence of Keyboard makes notes discrete. What this thing is doing, like the Haken is interpolating a continuum. a Guitar string IS a continuum.
      All you are doing is what you said yourself, EMULATING. Is not the real thing, is an imitation.
      For a guitarist to emulate a piano all they have to do is learn how to tap properly, check out Stanley Jordan, Chris Broderick and Guthrie Govan.

    • @StrayMedicine

      10 notes that can be played simultaneously > 6 notes
      a keyboard layout is more efficient for playing more notes, plus there's binomial muscle memory
      but stringed instruments are more expressive
      why not get the best of both worlds

    Very interesting, thank you. Actually, one of the first things I noticed was that you can't bend a note more than an octave. But perhaps that's a MIDI limitation; I can't think why else the bending would stop there.

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic 8 років тому

      +Jim Delaney It's not a MIDI limitation, some of my synths can bend up or down several octaves, and will send that MIDI data out no problems... Maybe a programmed limitation in the controller?

    • @JimInRoses
      @JimInRoses 8 років тому

      I discovered more about the ROLI and MIDI. You can bend the pitch by sliding a finger from one keywave to the next and onward, but to match the bent pitch with the pitch you would get by tapping on that same place, you have to set the pitch range to ±12 semitones, i.e. one octave up or down.

    • @aandarcom
      @aandarcom 8 років тому +3

      +Jarom Eubanks It doesn't make any sounds, it is only a MIDI controller, it sends MIDI note and continuous controller data to a synthesizer or a computer with some VSTi running in a DAW.
      So yes, with a sample player loaded with any piano sample set, it can sound like a piano.

    • @foljs5858
      @foljs5858 8 років тому +4

      +Jarom Eubanks Well, for that, you can get an actual piano. Or a simple keyboard controller with piano sounds.
      Since the piano doesn't have vibrato or aftertouch or continuous pressure sensitivity, sounding like a piano defeats the whole purpose of getting this controller...

    • @joergfritsch
      @joergfritsch 8 років тому +1

      +Joerg Fritsch Well, not very legit. This is expensive and with a very specific purpose. People who buy it pressumably already have several conventional controllers. It's not meant to be used as a spare when a regular piano/keyboard isn't around.

    I really wish someone could answer one question for me.. What can the Seaboard do that I can not already do with all my sets of keys, and pedals, and ribbon controllers, and mod wheels, and pitch benders, and sliders, and knobs, and joysticks. It's not enough for a controller to be "new", it has to bring something new to the "table".

    • @Rod-Ellis
      @Rod-Ellis 8 років тому +3

      It's as if you didn't watch the video...it's to take the need of pitch benders, wheels, sliders, etc. away. There's one piece he plays where he's doing normal notes on the left hand, but on his right hand, doing separate notes that he only needs one hand to bend the pitch. On a standard controller, you would need to use the other hand to bend pitches, use sliders, etc. and you miss out on getting lower or higher notes to create a fuller sound. If you wanted to play normal deep notes, but still bend pitches on separate higher notes on a standard controller, you'd "need a third hand" as Rudess says in the video.

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic 8 років тому

      Matt Warren Yes I have watched the videos. The Point™ is that they only real use it seems for the Roli is in a "live" setting. There is nothing a Roli can do in a studio setting that can not already be done, (or is already being done).

    • @Rod-Ellis
      @Rod-Ellis 8 років тому +3

      Yeah, you can still do the same stuff in a studio, but with the Seaboard, a lot can be done more easily, and again, with less equipment to have to set up.
