  • Finding a fun car for around five grand is difficult, finding one that's cheap to run is even more tricky. That said, let's see if you should consider a Sentra Spec V alongside the Honda Civic SI, Subaru WRX, VW GTI, Mazdaspeed3 and more.
Thank you, Gage Jessee, for letting me test out the Sentra!

I got one this past October, a 2010 SE R Spec V with a LSD trans , it had about 70k miles (109k KMs) on it . Paid 9k CAD for it and still drives and looks almost like new still . No leaks and she still pulls hard . Loving this car , highly underrated and overlooked tbh .

Proud owner of a ‘12 spec v. Had the car since new, now closing in on 250,000 miles. The engine is great, she has a couple oil leaks that I need to take care of when I get a chance ( valve cover gasket and oil cooler seals). Replaced the clutch and flywheel at 215,000 miles or so. Just replaced the original alternator that gave up the ghost a week ago. Struts and shocks have been replaced once, next time going to replace the tired springs with new ones, front lower control arms too. The rear bushings for the rear suspension beam need to be replaced. But all in all doing the preventive maintenance on this car has kept it running very well. And the paint is cheap, have a few peeling areas on the hood and above the driver rear passenger door. Most of the paint issues are due to rock chips that got out of hand. But I love my car, and will drive it til the wheels fall off.

Amen, got mine at 80k, over 210 now. Will soon be taking on the suspension myself. What brand did you go with and how did it affect your ride? Thanks!

@@Nightss10 the struts and shocks I kept with Nissan. You can also get the Nissan value advantage parts that work as well. But Sachs makes shocks and struts for our car too. If you’re looking at LCAs I would recommend Nissan but Mevotech makes good ones too. But if you’re going the aftermarket route get the Mevotech supremes. And as far as wheel bearings, the Nissan ones are made by NSK.

@1n0nly5am thanks a lot for the reply! I was looking at the mevotech ones, wasn't sure if they would kill the sporty ride or not, and I'm replacing the tie rod, sway bar, control arm with mevotech too. All on the front end. Pretty affordable actually !

I had the 93 Sentra SE-R (5 SPD) in black as a lease driving to and from Philly and Pittsburgh via the Turnpike, Radar Detecter and all. I get clocked by Air one day, 76 in a 55. I loved that car, it was fun, carved the twisty roads (on summer tread) and got me back home (with Winter Tread) through the snow. That thing sang loudly in the cabin when above 100 MPH, but it felt like it could run forever. That was was when Nissan was Nissan. My brother picked up a Spec V, (6 SPD) when they first hit and had no issues with his either. Nissan just doesn't excite me any more. Happy that the 2012 one for the most part held up, hoping that your friend has some Happy Motoring ahead! Thanks for the video!

Jim wolf technology sells cylinder heads for the first gen spec v, and i imagine the second as well. You can have the gen 1 QR25DE rev to 8000 with proper valve work done. Can have them build the head to your specs on the website, just click the options, and they send it out. Had s1 cams in my spec v and it was hilariously fun even with stock rev limiter. Need a new harness right now, still looking to find it, but these videos make me so excited to get her back on the road.

I think that Nissan/Renault was emulating the Italian cars of the 60's like the Alfa Guila or Lancia Fulvia Sedans, in that they are sedans with some performance tweaks that would make them appealing to a guy or girl who needed the practicality of a sedan but with a nice manual transmission and peppy engine, so they still can get a little spirited driving and thrills. I found a 2011 with 118,000 miles for $6,000 but it needs a lot of cosmetic work, having been parked on the street. At this point it might be hard to find one that has been taken care of , garaged it's whole life by a enthusiast. But they're worth it if you can find one!

I have a 07 Se-r spec v with the moonroof and rockford fosgate radio. I love this car just as much or a little more than my 370Z. It's a fun car and practical. It also has plenty of power to get you out of the way. The only car I would probably replace it with is a WRX and that's only if it died and wasn't worth fixing. Almost 140k on the odometer. The only thing I don't like is no folding mirrors. I accidentally broke the driver mirror in the garage swatting at a wasp, but immediately ordered a replacement. I love the seats and they don't hurt my back.

Just an inside tip, go back to 04-06 for the B15 Spec V, much better looking car overall. I feel like its the last Sentra with tuner roots. Nissan really destroyed the soul of the car when they designed a high roof mid sized 07 sedan. Should have stayed compact IMO.

I have this car (2011 Nissan Sentra Spec-V with the moonroof, sound system, back up cam, etc) with around 214,000KM & she still drives like she is brand new... So much torque & speed when I need it & it throws people off because they dont expect this crappy looking Sentra to fly when you hit the gas lol.
I was shopping for a new car but over the pass 3 weeks I just sort of accepted I wont find anything better than this unless im willing to shell out 12,000grand or more. The interior still looks fresh & clean the exterior is getting dated but its also stored outside... Maintenance costs have been average & no major repairs yet besides the clutch.
I also have been using regular gas the whole time but top of the line engine oil...

They are not known to leak oil ... Pre cat is correct thats why you throw an exhaust on it. The only real issue is 07-09 had knock sensor issues. All you do is put a rubber 50 cent spacer on it and its fixed. The timing chain is because people dont replace them at 110ish like they should. Ive had my car since 2015 it had 30k miles and stock. Now its fully built big turbo car with 125k. I ran stock motor turbo setup for years making 340whp.
A friend of mine has 300k on his stock engine with a turbo on it at 150k.

I own this vehicle and lucky enough I got the model with all the bells and whistles, have owned it since 2015. I would buy this car a million times over. The only thing I have had to do on it has been oil changes, brakes, and repair the muffler. No leaks, no creaks, no drips, and no noise. Absolutely rock solid vehicle that is an absolute BLAST to drive. I've taken it to my local track and it beat my brothers 2008 328i. What a perfect vehicle for a spirited driver. The only complaints are the fuel consumption isn't great, especially when you account for the premium gas. And the rear seats not folding down has definitely been annoying at times. I have put over 120kms on this bad boy. I don't think I will ever sell it.
I rate this car 9.5/10 for a young spirited driver. I have driven other vehicles in the price range, and they all feel like cheap garbage compared to my Sentra. Can't say enough good things about this reliable car.
I think you did a good job reviewing it, however it seems like you may have gotten a used vehicle that didn't have the best caretaker for it, which may make it feel a bit more wobbly than it should feel. All your critiques are pretty accurate, especially the premium fuel. That's BIG money these days. But it's my weekend car now so I can afford to put that stuff in it again.
