Very useful video. I use copper algaecide and always have to increase chlorine levels before adding it. Then since chlorine raises ph in my pool often have to add muriatic acid. It is a real pain to deal with. Phosphates too due to leaves and debris but adding phosphate remover clogs filter up quickly.

Thank you for video we’ve been dealing with algae that keeps coming back and trying to keep everything balance is hard. Question is do you treat algae first or balance pool first? Currently we have low alkalinity, high chlorine and low ph. We have in the past done everything all at once but came back to same thing. We even had to drain entire pool and yet here we are back again with same issue. Any help please appreciate it.. pool maintenance we hire didn’t even help up to now so trying to find solution and y’all have been the best I’ve found with good info. Thanks

I do pool work, and I would treat for the algae first. Get it killed and gone. You'll likely have to vacuum to waste following. Then balance, so you're not vacuuming chems just added to waste.

Yeah, Justin makes a good point. Treat the algae first. With a low pH situation, the chlorine will work harder for you as there’s a higher level of Hypochlorus Acid (the killing kind of chlorine) make sure the pool is running 24/7, and make sure the filter is dialed in. If you can vacuum to waste, you can vacuum as much of the live algae directly out before even treating. That means less money spent on chems to cure the pool.
On to chemistry though......have we checked phosphate, hardness, and CYA levels? When those two things are high, it can be a real fight to eradicate the algae and it may be best to drain, do a chlorine wash and refill fresh. If those things are in a good range though we have a good shot at knocking it out with chems. You’ve gotta get that chlorine up and keep it up. That means testing frequently and bumping the chlorine levels often until they hold. Go with a metal based or polymer based algaecide as ammonium based algaecides consume chlorine and you’ll struggle further to keep the levels up. If you stay on top of it and hit it hard, you should be able to knock it out.

Based on this video what would be best way to treat algae(FYI we have some type of brown orange spots on wall and some on bottom) thinking this metal spots? Could this be also affect the balance?

With a copper 7 product, do you still add chlorine?

Stuff like swimtrine, which was one of the algaecides in the video is copper based. You can add chlorine with it, but not necessary if you have a chlorine reading.
