We watched this on TV at the time. Even on the TV screen, it was a magic 10”, and it was apparent in the moment itself how exceptional the race had been. They all ran an almost flawless race. So close, 6 runners under 10”. I remember being totally floored by the enormity of it. Still one of my all-time favorite sporting moments ever.
The call from the US went like this: RAY STEWART with a quick start, BURRELL is there, MITCHELL is running well, so is CHRISTIE, BURRELL with a short lead, here comes LEWIS, CARL LEWIS!!!! NINE POINT EIGHT SIX!!! NEW WORLD RECORD!!!!
I was there! I was in Tokyo on a summer work placement from college. Bagged a ticket from some folks who were leaving the stadium and got to see Carl Lewis break the record! It was over so fast I didn't know whether to take a photo, or to look at the big screen or at the runners (who were running away from me) and then it was over! Amazing, incredible, unforgettable moment.
I wonder what would happen if Carl was in the peak of his form today. With all technology and resources of the 21st century, I think he would be jumping over 9.0m and running the 100m below 9.50s.
I'm not sure about running below 9.50s. His start was never the best amongst sprinters. 9.58s by bolt consist of a very good start (6.31s) and a flying last 40m of 3.27s. Carl may match that last 40m but definitely not the first 60m.
9,86 is not carls record is 9,80 in semis :D thats a fail 9.90Wr 9,80cr=! xD 9.80WR=World Record 9.80CR=Championships Record thats correct Today 9.58 WR CR 9,58 OR:9,63 Olympic Record
No he wasn't. The only drug test Lewis failed was in the run up to Seoul '88 where he was found to have 6ppm of stimulants in his sample, a level which only merited "further investigation" not a ban and is a level which is now well within the current allowed limit. Hardly the same as Johnson's seven years of continuous anabolic steroid use.
@@fegstachops6746 Carl Lewis was never running no 9.6 back in 1991, good start or not. If you knew anything about athletics, I shouldn’t have to explain that to you
If you are referring to Carl Lewis's father, he passed away in 1987. Apparently, he gave his 100m Olympic Gold Medal from LA84 to his father just prior to his casket closing and was buried with it.
Do you even realize how fast a 9.86? Also the reason why sprinter's are faster today is bc of the surfaces and the shoes. It's been scientifically proven that today's sprinter's aren't much better than even Jesse Owens time. So you got it twisted homeskillet!
No he didn't. You need to research what his "failed" drug test actually was in full before you start comparing him to some of the steroid-fuelled athletes that have run in the 100m.
This is still the only race where 6 runners were under 9.96. What makes it also special is how close it was (6 athletes in one meter) and how many personal records were broken in that single race. Finally, it was post-1988, so steroid usage had dropped dramatically and this period was "relatively" free of drugs.
Amazing race, easily the best 100m race of all-time
My favourite for sure. What a comeback by Lewis for a WR.
Unparalleled in terms of records broken. Insane
Carl lewis was definitely the most stylish athlete of track and field.

Lewis finest moment as a sprinter..and the greatest race of ALLTIME. The greatest 1 2 3 in U.S sprint history.

Best lineup in history.
A who’s who of sprinters
Funny how this isn't remembered that well.
Lewis was definitely a great athlete
It’s generational I guess. The purists know what’s up

He would definately run 9.65 something like that.
Yes, this was another one of the best race back then.
The best of all time. Record breakers
Hard to believe this was 32 years ago yesterday. Majority of today's stars competing in Budapest wasn't even born yet when this race took place
When 9.92 doesn't get you even a bronze...
poor Christie.
Forward to 2012 when a 9.80 doesn’t medal
Carl ran a 9.80 in one of the heats, but it was wind-aided.
9,86 is not carls record is 9,80 in semis :D thats a fail

CR 9,58

I remember that well. And he wasn't even flat out and eased up a little before the line!
Who was the commentators on this 100m epic final?
CARL LEWIS--- 9.86 WR, LEROY BURRELL--- 9.88 PB, DENNIS MITCHELL--- 9.91 PB!!! USA MEDAL SWEEP AT THE WORLDS!!!
Windy CR's did count in those days but it was around the last time they did.
Yeah you're talking about Surin's 9'84 behind Greene in Sevilla 1999?
9.86 NEW WR
By the comments people seem oblivious to the fact that Lewis was as doped up as the much maligned Ben Johnson !

Bad start for Lewis , if he got of to a flyer it could well of been around 9.6
I think it would be around 9.75, but considering the technical conditions of the 90's it would be a remarkable time.
@@concertom8774
Of course it would 9.86 in 91 is like 9.66 now.
9.6 😂

The fastest 100m race of all time looks pathetic by today's standards...

Well, that's one way of looking at things.
I'd rather say that science and money changed sprinting.
