  • This is a video about the dog breed Irish Red and White Setter, from the www.naturallyhappydogs.com website.
In this video, we meet the dog breed, the Irish Red and White Setter. Setters have been around since Roman times but only relatively recently have the different types of setter been differentiated.
Red and White Setters are quite rare, which is surprising given the aristocratic look and loving personality of the breed. Gemma Hawkins is clearly a fan. She tells about the history of this setter and what it is like to look after today.

    I've
Had English Springer's and they look so similar right down to the feathering which in our Canadian winters looks incredible on them almost like a freisha horse and I love the silky fur that sheds mud and burrs easily...my friend had the mother of mine aand we'd just got back from a run through the forest and they of course went right through the chilly stream and were covered in mud ... by the time we got back to the store .they'd shed all the mud and a guy looked down at them and said..wow you can sure tell those dogs are looked after..they're beautiful.. .. 10 minutes before that they were covered in mud... beautiful breed... I want a a red and white now too...

Thank you for this great video. I have a red and white Irish Setter (F) and live in Australia. Also have a field red Irish Setter (M). They get on together really well.

I got Keyser in 2020 and now am an IRSW addict 😱 i need another. My keyser has 3 hearts on his back and side when he gets his winter coat. I dont think i could be without him (even if he makea the most random dog decisions in a dog ive ever owned 😱😅)

Thanks a superb video, do you have to be careful with the prey instinct of these Setters around other small dogs, cats and rabbits?
Edit: Also are they prone to eating poo and rolling in it?

They will chase things and try to play with family cats, but generally don't have an aggressive bone in their body in my experience. One of our cats had a real mean streak with the dogs & used to corner the Setter or trap him in rooms by guarding the doorway until he barked for his humans to save him. The other dogs waged a battle of wits with that cat, which was usually a draw with the big Newfoundland x Lurcher he actively loathed, and generally a truce with the Border Collie who mainly ignored him, but the Setter was thoroughly terrified of him.
Rolling in smelly stuff, galloping through mud, jumping in stagnant ponds etc... is fact of life with Setters I'm afraid. A pile of old towels by the back door & fairly frequent baths should be expected.

I know they look similar! But the WSS is around 40-50lbs and IRWS are 50-70lbs. But when the IRWS were slowly dying out by 1900, I wonder if they used WSS to help their numbers.

I don't know about waiting until the first dog is 18 months before getting a second. That seems like you're making things unnecessarily complicated for yourself. I understand that raising multiple 2-4 month old puppies would be challenging, but with my 7 month old high energy puppy, I think I would be much more overwhelmed if I needed to actually tire her out myself, instead of than just letting her play with my other dog. (Of course I still need to do activities with her myself, but it would be more work if I was her ONLY source of activity/fun.)
At 7 months, she's already trained enough that I don't need to put as much focus on her anymore, and would be able to devote the necessary attention to a younger puppy.
It also seems to me that dogs who grew up alone, often have a harder time adjusting when they suddenly have to share all the attention. They closer they get to reaching emotional maturity (not physical maturity!), the harder it gets.

ActiveAnimals so do you have or got a second dog? This is what I’ve been telling my lady! Our pup will turn one this year and Im hell bent on getting him a friend however she thinks we need to wait and has actually asked for scientific proof that it will be worse if we wait,LOL! Please any more info you can share is helpful! Thanks for this comment!

@@OdditiesOffcial Exactly what reasons does she have for thinking a second dog would be a bad idea? It's probably best to debunk each misconception individually.
I don't have any scientific sources at hand, but you can find plenty of dog trainers who'll back your point (also plenty who'll side with your wife; the dog training field is filled with controversy).
Stonnie Dennis has a video basically saying that raising littermates is easier than raising one (which I don't agree with, but whatevs): ua-cam.com/video/4LsDA264_Ks/v-deo.html
There's also a German (so not sure if it helps your situation) TV trainer who basically tells every second client to solve all their problems by just getting a second dog XD (Meike Maja Novak; the theory is that if you match the first dog's personality with a dog that has a much calmer personality, they will learn from each other and balance each other out.)
So yah, you can definitely find some "professionals" who'll convince your wife.

Do not brush dogs against the grain. Even children know that simple rule.
