Nice to meet you. It’s great that you are willing to study cultural differences in advance☺️ It is not mandatory for foreign tourists to speak Japanese. However, if you learn Japanese greetings, I think it will be easier to get along with Japanese people. On the other hand, there are quite a lot of foreigners who speak fast and long sentences in English as a matter of course. This in itself is not desirable, but it is not a big problem. But sometimes there are people who act irritated or say, “Why can't you speak English? That's not good, right?”To be honest, that's pretty rude and personally the most unpleasant thing.
Some people drink alcohol and sleep on station platforms or on the street😅. Foreigners who come to Japan usually speak to me in English, but I feel happy if they speak even one word of Japanese such as SUMIMASEN or ARIGATOU. You don't have to wear a mask because it is not a rule. But in hospitals, you need to wear a mask. It is great that you are very respectful of other countries and do not impose your own culture. It is different from America! I was discriminated against! Some people say, it is not discrimination, it is just a difference. So I am sad when they say discrimination. So please don't misunderstand us if you get a different reaction from Americans. Japanese people are very shy, but only at first. Once you become friends, you can get to know each other very deeply, so it is reassuring to have good Japanese friends.
The way to ride an elevator is the same as in the U.S. Escalators are ridden on the left side in Tokyo. Osaka seems to be different. When you come to Japan, if you watch the walk of people, you will know how to ride them.
I'm sorry to hear that you felt discriminated against, I can relate to that feeling I had an experience of a similar manner in the UK and it really does hurt differently compared to other things. It is nice to hear that even if we foreigners only can use a word or two Japanese people are happy that we tried and not judgmental. I do not understand why some people impose their cultures in some counties, like did they not leave their home to visit another country in order to experience that countries culture? I like that Japanese people are shy because it feels that if someone becomes your friend it feels all the more genuine.
Thank you so much for the comment, it means a lot to me. I will definitely be going to Japan one day I will probably announce when someday.

Thank you for the tip, definitely will keep that in mind.
