He's gasping for air because you are effectively hanging him by the neck with your thumb, and probably squeezing him. It was very cruel to have him held like that for so long, an encounter with a predator like us, is very traumatic for such a small creature, so much so that it can be fatal for them.
I love them, too, they're so fragile and cute comparing to other mouse species, and exposed to too many kinds of predators...think of weasels, it's a horrifying thought
My cat just brought me a baby vole , it’s eyes are still closed has no teeth. It is about less than an inch long is the cutest freaking thing I’ve ever seen in my life.. so I got it a mouse house lol.. wish I could put pictures of it here ..❤
yeah, i hear you. they are adorable, I hate to see them die, but they also destroy the homes we live in and the foundation. I don't mind them elsewhere. What state or country are you in?
In that article says: Voles are short-lived, aggressive, they tend to bite, and it is near-impossible to provide them with a suitable diet. My experience with one variety of our local voles seemed to verify the prevailing wisdom: they lived only three months, they were aggressive, they bit if you tried to handle them, and it was impossible to find food they'd eat.
i would legitimately love to have a vole. if you catch one, or 2 even, please please let me know some details!!!! i am in illinois and have been dying to get into them !
I have a vole! It was a rehab-gone-wrong-situation. (Winter snow came early, after I weaned him off of feeding him goat's milk, I was planning on releasing him back into the wild) I have him since he was 2 weeks old. He's been with me for a little over a month now. He is doing great, runs on a wheel, will take treats from me etc. There is not too much of vole-in-captivty info, and while I am also very interested in learning more, (I keep pet domestic mice, so I was already small rodent knowledge informed) and I can also share with you what I know!
@@caposhepherd7107 pleaseeeee do!!! a month later and i am still obsessed with them!! they are too cute and i literally want a scenario like that to happen lol where me and my bf will just haveeeee to take in and care for a lil vole 🥺 ur right, there sadly isn’t too much vole in captivity info ! i would seriously appreciate any info or advice you’ve learned from your experience so we can also do our best, the fact that yours runs on a wheel too is so fkn cute aww🥺
@@ray-qu6zn anything in particular you want to know? :D animal care is one of my biggest interests so I could write a literal novel on the limited stuff (well I think limited, considering I want to know EVERYTHING) I know about raising a vole! I found him when I was walking my dog, there is a huge agricultural field near my house and I found him all alone in the fetal position by that field. Actually, my coonhound was the one that found him, but she is very gentle and literally pointed him out to me. I was confused on what to do, because he was out in the open and not put their on purpose. I think what may of happen was the mom was carrying him elsewhere and possibly she got startled right away by my dog or possibly something else. I decided to take him in my house, immediately filled a container with some small animal bedding, put the container on a heating pad, and then put him in. He dug right to the bottom right away! I then obtained some goat milk and a very fine tip paint brush, this is how you feed the very young ones, and fed him. Later that night It hit me that maybe his mom was looking for him, and I felt so stupid. I decided to put him in a box filled with bedding, and take him back to the spot where I found him. The only way to enter or leave the box was an adult vole shaped hole, so at least he would of been safe from predators and the Elements. The next day, probably over 12 hours later I went to check the box and he was still there. :/ i decided to shake some of the bedding out, thinking that maybe the mom would smell him better. I then came back a few hours later and he was not in the box! Well, then I heard the faintest little cry, and I turned around and about 2 feet away from the box was him back out in the open in the fetal position. :/ It was the first time I have ever heard him make a noise, so that broke my heart lol. He must of crawled out of the box and exhausted himself. (I said in the first comment he was 2 weeks, actually he must of been 8-10 days - his eyes literally just opened and all he could do is shakily crawl and would fall) So yeah I took him back to the house and decided to raise him. I am really glad I did cuz no less then 2 hours later it started pouring rain and continued to the whole night. Since I was determined to release him once he was ready, I only handled him when I was giving milk, I did not want him to become accustomed to me and lose his wildness. The whole releasing plan fell through tho, so I do believe he would of been much more tame if I handled him all the time when he was a baby. As with all wild critters, they do not make the most handable pets. Once he went to the stage of being fully self efficient (no more milk brush or heating pad, able to run fast as hell, actively avoided me etc) he made it loud and clear he did not want to be picked up anymore for any reason (yeah he bit me lol). I only ever move him when I have to clean his cage, and even then I use a tool. Things have cooled down slightly, and he is becoming less and less afraid. He does come up to me when I am by his cage, he won't run away in fear when I have to open his cage door, I stick the tip of my finger in the cage and he nibbles on my nail and smells, and idk with patience I am sure it will go much farther! But if not, I respect his decision and I will not push it. He is super entertaining to watch, and here is a big tip if you do get a vole because literally every UA-cam video that has a captive vole does not do this when they really should! Voles need deep bedding! At least 5 inches probably but the more the better! Voles are burrowing animals and spend most of their time making tunnels and being underground. And yes it is so fun to watch him make tunnels and then pop up lol. I said I was not going to write a novel, idk what happened..

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I don't think the guy realized that's what he was doing tho.
i love it lookit him try and breathe hahaha
I found one of these under our pear tree, poured some sunflower seeds in the hole and within seconds he came out starting to eat, they are very cute
Holy snap, come to my area... They are not rare here. There are millions that flee over our hills. Sad part is everywhere you walk there are holes.
He wasn't yawning. That's not what that was.
The tiny vole is saying "Please let me go!"
Sadly yes, but we have millions of them here.
